I love credit cards so much! v6.0 - 2023 (see first page for add'l details)

Oh -- we definitely plan on Italy but my DH really wants to go to Switzerland and since our first int'l trip (this June) was my choice, Ireland, I definitely want to get to Switzerland. I can't quite figure out how to structure Italy/Switz. We've never been to Italy so it seems like we have to do a few days in Rome, but I think it would be easier to do N. Italy + Switz (not that we couldn't fly to Zurich).

So was thinking Germany/Switzerland this go 'round then 2 weeks in Italy next.

We're also trying to really hone in on how we want to travel in Europe. Both transportation wise (planes, trains, automobiles) as well as experience. We are experienced in the American West and enjoy hiking and being outdoors. We LOVED our trip to Ireland where we avoided big cities (literally were only in Dublin to land and get our rental car, we flew out of SNN on the way home). We did some hiking, enjoyed small towns and pubs, loved being outdoors, did a boat/bike trip in Killarney and took a ferry to Inishbofin where we rented bikes (and as luck would have it, were there during the most sunny month on record.)

But boy that direct to FRA is sooooo tempting. So currently we're thinking a loop from Frankfurt down into Switzerland to the jungfrau region then perhaps back to Frankfurt via Salzburg and Munich. OR we'd just fly home from Zurich. Admittedly I hadn't thought of the RDU-FRA flight as the positioning one, lol!
That direct flight for a great price is something I think you should grab. You're gonna kick yourself if it gets snagged up. Here's a cool itinerary for Switzerland and Northern Italy that seems like it would be up your alley.

Just wow on the photos from that blog post. I need to start planning a trip!

And your Maldives trip looks incredible! Thanks for sharing! And congrats on 25 years together. :flower3:

Me again. Let's say I decide to burn every single one of DH's MRs to transfer to Delta to fly him to Germany. It says the name must match the name on the account. How exact? His Delta has his full name and Amex has the name he goes by. The Delta account has one more letter. Do you think that will be an issue? If not, I guess I can transfer them to mine and book for him, since I have a card on that account. My name is the same everywhere LOL.

I haven't taken down my sun sails or put away our patio furniture. It's snowing, with accumulation. Ooops.
Same. Though in the end everything on the ground melted, Minnie and Mickey Halloween blowups have a dusting of snow and the house roof has a dusting as well. Made for a darn cold Halloween but the kids who made it out got handfuls of candy for their efforts (and some came twice. 🤨)

Of course, for some reason, using miles Delta only offers 4 return flights from Munich, all terrible. If we pay cash, there are at least a dozen or more, with much better times. Grrrrrrrr. I really don't want to pay cash, I'd have to cash out wayyyyyyy more UR's than I want to to cover it. The points aren't horrible, but the layover on the way back is almost 5 hours. I don't think he's going to want to go for that at all.

I had a similar problem recently and ended up booking two separate one-way flights rather than a round-trip. I was able to use points for one flight because the options weren't terrible but ended up paying cash for the return flight.

I have a few rental car questions (it's been a while since I rented a car). Alamo and Budget are about the same price; Enterprise is about $50 more. I usually just go with the cheapest option (interestingly Hertz isn't an option but I have heard enough horror stories about them to stay away). Any reason to choose Alamo over Budget? Or pay a bit extra for Enterprise? (Picking up at the Phoenix airport, if anyone happens to have specific information about that location.)

The cash flight (once I do the conversion from Euros) is about 75% of the round trip costs.

I don’t like Budget. Seems like everytime I use them they do something that messes us up.

Alamo and Enterprise are owned by the same company and have shared the same pool of cars at many airports I have been to. Therefore, I wouldn't pay $50 extra for Enterprise. I have used Alamo exclusively for several years and (knock on wood) never had a problem. I do Skip the Counter, and it is awesome! Recently, I have started booking Alamo through Costco. It is cheaper and they give you the Alamo res number so you can link it in your Alamo account.

I am by no means an expert on car rentals, but Alamo consistently delivers well maintained, and clean cars for us. To be fair I’ve never used another rental car company simply because I appreciate the ease of being able to get everything registered with Alamo before the trip and skip going to the counter. At the airports we’ve rented from we can go directly to the car, pick the one we want, and off we go. No standing in line, or getting the insurance upsell. That to me is worth a lot. Also returning the cars had always been smooth and efficient wherever we’ve been. No problems with billing etc., and I always book through Costco. I hear great things about Enterprise because they are essentially the same company as Alamo, but as you posted they are consistently more expensive.

Even though we live in Phoenix I have rented from Alamo at Sky Harbor. They have a nice selection of cars, and again very friendly service. In fact, we ended up driving away in a BMW. Obviously Alamo would be my choice.

Haha! Simultaneously posting almost identical responses. You’re clearly an intelligent person 😂

Avoid Budget!!! Gosh, so many headaches with our past rentals but we kept coming back because they're so cheap, until we said enough! One time in CA they gave us a vehicle that had been in an accident and had part of the back bumper indented and the side all scratched up. They said sorry, it's all we have left. They gave us a copy of the police report from the accident and assured us they had noted everything and we'd have no issue. We had to go and had no choice but to take it. No issues during the return, but luckily I kept the police report and had taken lots of pictures. A couple months later we got a bill from a collections agency trying to get money from us for the repair of the car we didn't crash! How did they even send the debt (which should not have been assigned to us in the first place) to a collections agency without first contacting us themselves anyway? That was such a hassle to fix, each department saying it wasn't them who could fix it. It took weeks to get it sorted and I was so worried about the collections being reported to credit agencies. We have other stories but that's really the worst, and never again after that.

Good to know folks here like Alamo, might try them next time we need a car. In a couple of weeks when we're in Italy we're using Hertz to get a Tesla to drive to San Marino and then to various places in the North. I'm worried because of the Hertz horror stories but didn't see another company offering electric cars. I hope everything will be ok...
On the bright side, I used an Amex Hertz offer from Members Week

New Chase offer for Air Canada

10% back, max $40, on a $100+ purchase.
One time only
Expires 11/30

Also 10% at Megabus, Max $12
One time, Expires 12/10
(Although I suspect one is not quite the same as the other)

So, DH (P2) had a link on his Chase log in that he was pre-approved for the Chase Ink Unlimited. We clicked on the link and the SUB offered is $1200 (120K SUB).

Seems like a no brainer? No support needed and therefore no 1099 issued for the supporter.
Awesome. Where was the link?
