New "Navigators"

Not particularly. l like being able to have a folded page in my pocket to remember where I want to go next, without having to head back to my room every time.

Counter point

Watch the TV in the morning, favorite the things you want to do in the app, and then go do them. Another option is watch the TV, write them down, and then go do them.

DCL needs what NCL has though and others where you have touch screen terminals around the ship that has all the info on events and locations and such.

There is an error though in your thought process.
  • You will still have your phone
  • Datacenters are more easily able to be environmentally friendly through improvements in efficiency (including through renewable energy consumption)
Additionally Datacenters are built for maximum workload which means there is lots of wasted potential much of the time easily allowing to pull the workloads of feed documents to devices.

Long term the hope is that more Datacenters start moving to more eco-friendly locations and leveraging more environmentally friendly processes as well. I think there are starting to be some located in locations that can be run through solar. Even if solar is not as efficient today its all about building a blueprint for future improvement IMO.
The fact that we can’t have a lousy piece of paper to hold in our hand and read about the day’s events because someone tells us we aren’t worthy to use it is preposterous. Paper is recyclable and highly renewable. This virtue signaling to disguise cost savings is getting old. I’m going on a luxury cruise. A piece of paper a day is hardly abusive of the planet.

Virtue signaling?

I personally can care less if people know (I never tell people). I would prefer single use products/packaging be avoided as much as possible. I am simply stating why I personally will not support bringing back mass printing of navigators.

Additionally from Disney's view paper has been on the out for a while (along with many other companies). There has been a general push to remove single use where ever possible and everyone already has digital devices and they will be serving all information up digitally regardless.

The big issue right now is the UI/UX designers for DCL are not the greatest. If they produced a more digestible app there would be even fewer people complaining.

Luxury in my mind means they should be even more capable of removing as much waste and pollution as possible. Heck DCL is built on the concept these days that it is more environmentally friendly than other cruise lines.

Put me in the camp of people who would still like to have a paper Navigator. Using the app on board is OK, but not my preference. What I was mostly commenting on though was that I don’t think the Navigators the way they are today are useful for preplanning. I think that Scott and the guest who sent him the screenshots worked very hard to create a usable document. I just didn’t find it very usable. You can click on each of the screenshots and zoom in but it certainly is not as user-friendly from a planning perspective as the previous paper navigators were.

I just hope I don’t receive a single other piece of paper in cabin if they have eliminated the navigators to be environmentally friendly. No art auction or diamond sale papers please!

I have never seen an art auction on a DCL ship... but that's just me.

When I talked to guest services the one time, they made a really interesting point about how many of the paper navigators they were having to print on board every day and the work that had to be put into getting everything done for the next day. We started cruising in 2018 and never really cared for the paper navigators or really used them because the app was available. If you were a new cruiser (which seems to be more DCL's current income stream) then you wouldn't even know about the previous paper navigators.

I don't expect the paper navigators to come back any time soon or even at all although I would like to see the paper/formal menu's come back sooner rather than later in the dining rooms. I didn't like ordering off my phone on the Fantasy on our cruise a few weeks or so ago.

From Disney's point of view, they don't care that people use them for pre planning. They only care about that they are providing information for the passengers currently on board on a daily basis. Therefore the having the information on the App and TV is fit for purpose and also complies with the overall Walt Disney Company Environmental Sustainability policy of reducing single use paper where possible.

I know. Just making an observation that these are not as useful. I understand Disney’s point of view on this. The Navigators today are different than when we first sailed with Disney in 1998, and I’m sure there will be different Navigators in the future. Currently, DCL seems to be of the opinion that everyone has a smart phone and that they want to use those smart phones on their cruise.

I would disagree the "everyone" already has digital devices. Most people, yes, but I still know people that don't have cell phones, and some the have non-smart flip phones.

LOL.. baloney... you ever been on a DCL cruise? my guess is not...Otherwise you'd know how much paper is wasted everyday with all the crappy ads and flyers that show up on your SR promoting xyz diamond, jewelry store, artwork.. That's every day, every SR.. And then when there's a POC the next day, there's also flyers for the diamond stores available at Grand Cayman, Cozumel etc.
So, no, it's not about sustainability or the environment or covid. It's purely about $.
No $ to be made on the navigators

EXACTLY. There is $$ to be made by advertising sales (on and off the ship) but there is no new revenue for Disney (you already paid for the cruise) to inform cruisers about movies, characters, events around the ship, etc.

You can disagree but its an expectation and its a very high percentage. At this point if you are going to WDW or DCL you need a smartphone. Don't want a smartphone at home? Thats fine you can get cheap ones from Amazon or you can borrow one from a friend/family likely.

Roughly 85% of the US owns a smartphone and up over 10% in the last 5 years. Additionally you have 93% ownership by college graduates and 97% ownership by those who make $75k+ per year.

Can I get the cruises navigator the week prior at home, that way I may print that up. Surely they will know whats going on a week before my cruise.

You can not even access until you get on the ship. If a printed version is important than bring a piece of paper and a pen.

I thought they removed all that paper from the rooms as well though. It had been at one point but are you saying its now back again?

They may have removed them due to Covid, but PRE-covid, POST paper Navigators, all the printed advertisements were still left in the staterooms.

Yes.. And it's also hilarious there are people that think Disney getting rid of the navigators is because
of "the environment"...no it's not.
Those that sailed DCL know very well about the huge amount of overall waste... but just the navigators get the axe.
Think about plastic. there's gotta be thousands if not 10's of thousands of bottles (water and soda) used in a single sailing.... all those water bottle packages they try to force you to buy on embarkation day...when you're at the pool & ask the CM for water, it's a bottle. Except the MDR's and cabanas, water bottles are everywhere..
The ratio of water/soda bottles to navigators is gotta be at least 3:1 if not 5:1 or more...but there's $ to be made on water..
It's never been about the environment. It's about $ period.

Yes and they remove them and likely those will never return either.

Pre-covid you could also get Navigators printed at request. So these seem to go hand in hand.

Yet they don't leave any print in the rooms. They also could easily sell space on those navigators to make $$$$ if they really wanted to. Example they could sell ads to stores in ports, push certain premium items, push port of call shopping seminars, and even push non DCL related things.

Additionally I can care less why Disney is doing it. Same reason I can care less why people get vaccinate, why they donate money to charity, or a million other things in life.
