Covid And The Rest of Us

I haven't done an NL update in a while.
Where are we? Besides 7 meters below sea level :P

In comparison to last week, infections went down 3%, deaths 12%, hospitalizations 14%, and 12% of the people getting tested, test positive in comparison to 13,8% last week. Going in the right direction, but nowhere near good. Also people partying going down (based on police reports). R figure and daily infections are going up and down like a yo-yo

- Maybe the Christmas school holiday gets extended.
- The Dutch national airline says it's too early to talk about only transporting people who are vaccinated, like Qantas released yesterday.
- Setting off fireworks is illegal this year (except some light stuff), and therefore no one is selling. People now go to Belgium & Germany to get their fireworks. So they are now looking into to make it illegal to import fireworks.
- Carbid shooting (practiced mainly in the East of NL) is not getting prohibited on a national level, but probably on regional level. Which makes sense, cause in the rest of NL, they don't or hardly do this.
- Strangely enough we don't have any clear predictions when exactly we will start with vaccinations, while surrounding countries do say late December/(Early) January, we are still at quarter 1 2021.

Oh, not NL, but Belgium is finally doing better (and better than NL) , so yay Belgium :)

:wave2: Thanks Karin. Are you able to provide actual numbers? Here in Alberta we are freaking out at how many new cases are being diagnosed - as of yesterday our positivity rate is 8%, around 1,500 cases out of about 17,000 tests conducted over the weekend. There are more than 300 people in hospital which is more than double the worst point this spring. :(

Winnipeg’s positivity rate is 14%! One small town outside of the city has a rate of 40%!!!

Sure, we do not freak out easily here ;-)

Why? :rolleyes1 If it's a reference to the number of ethnic people that live there, well...maybe you haven't travelled around Canada enough. Come visit Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Montreal, Halifax - all with very vibrant, multi-cultural populations. And more and more now, newcomers to Canada are choosing to settle in smaller and more remote places away from the major cities. They, as much as anyone, are in fact what make Canada the country we're all so proud of.

You're kinder than I ronandannette. I read it as racist, and reported it as so.

Seriously, they look like a carbon copy of Montreal to me. That post seriously bothered me, then I remembered those who like to push your buttons, and I laughed. Canada is definitely multi-cultural, and boy it is wonderful! 🇨🇦

After the post I read username, and saw 'white' then I saw red!

There was a big data dump from the weekend today - yes, now Alberta officially reports more new cases than Ontario. Here's today's headline:

My feeling is Alberta was lacking in leadership to prevent the now situation from developing. We here in Ontario have had good leadership from Premier Ford sans the pressure to be more open and/or remain so.

What do Albertans (sp?) think needs to be done now to turn this dire situation around?

How is it acceptable to say this (bolded)? Put another group of people in there instead of seniors and it’s not hard to see the ageism there.

Where I am seniors wear their masks as well as anyone else. Personally I find it very sad to see someone in their 80s or higher in the grocery store shopping by themselves wearing a mask. But they do it.
I did not mean to upset anyone, but at our store these days are the busiest and most of our regulars that come in do not wear masks, and when I have asked them during conversation they tell me that they will not. Sorry for the upset.

Duly noted, Jane.

Is your post political? Do both of these leaders have something in common that you don’t care for? The shut downs in the Niagara region have been devastating to that area. Too much pressure to close it all down.

You read it wrong
I must say I was hoping for an answer to the question "Why?" when I replied to your post. I was in Brampton in September, as well as a number of other neighbourhoods in the GTA and in Ottawa and the Niagara region. As a home-grown Canadian, they all seemed uniformly Canadian-y to me. :confused3

Just a follow up to the Brampton/Mississauga being a different country. My family is pretty much as white as you can get, blind people when we go out in the summer with the sun bouncing off our pasty skin type white. My kids are the minority at their school, very much so. But there is NO majority. There’s a lot of Pakistanis, Indians (as in from India), Chinese, Korean, Polish, Jamaican, American and English. It’s a true melting pot, and I’m very happy my kids are being raised here and won’t see anything “wrong” with others around them looking different from themselves. I moved here from Hamilton, a 45 minute drive away. And I grew up thinking it was multi cultural. I was wrong lol.

My mistake in my post has been corrected. I meant to say Premier Ford is a good leader for the exception of a little crumbling when under pressure to adjust closings/openings.

Hamilton was my hometown. Growing up (in the late 50's) the city's residents were predominately English, African, Irish, German, Italian, and many other european descendants. My childhood was bliss. My fondest memories are of the cultural differences religion, food, music, dance, and many childhood friendships.

Sadly I have understood that things took a turn to prejudice in later years... sigh.

I'm a Niagara resident. Yes, Niagara has been devastated, but the cooperation of all is helping to keep our Covid19 numbers low and our hospitals less stressed than other areas of Ontario for that matter Canada. 🇨🇦
