March Trip reports

@bama_ed

I may leave my wife at FW and come join you for some baseball! That looks like a great schedule!!

Have fun and safe travels.

Your wife doesn't read the DisBoards does she? :)

Ah! You beat me to it!
My DW would probably consider it an added bonus to her vacation if I went for some baseball. She has commented in the past while we have been at our GSP Dismeets that when Ed started the morning puzzle routine that it made it easier for her to sleep in because I wasn't clanging around the camper in the early morning hours.

@bama_ed, you may be in luck for the rocket launch. The Delta IV is still scheduled for 6:58pm on the 13th. I'm hoping the Falcon Heavy will go during the last week of the month when we'll be at The Fort!

That's what I'm watching, dalir. Hope it goes off as scheduled.

Being the nerdy guy I am, I would love to watch a SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch with both side boosters returning to the Cape to land. At night. From Jetty Park campground (8 miles from the pad). But my fingers are crossed for you that it goes up during your Fort stay.

I haven't forgotten we need to do lunch.

I could use some enthusiastic company, 2rad4u. There's already some grumbling at home from DW and DD. See, my DW has a rule that anything we do we HAVE to do it together (bumming around the campground excluded along with runs to the grocery store). Thus I have 3 tickets for all the games, (DW, DD, me). I tell them to bring a book or cross-stitch and enjoy the sunshine. :cool2:

Checking items off my to-do list before we leave for Florida Saturday morning.

Fill propane tanks - check
Made out beds and put sheets on them-check
Bought new shiny hitch ball to replace rusted one-check
Oil change in tow vehicle (230,000 miles and ticking)-check

I think I will take off a half-day vacation Friday afternoon to pack the stuff in the back of the Suburban (EZ up awning, folding chairs, etc.) and load my personal gear. Have the electrical cooler pre-cooled and loaded in the kitchen by Friday night so I can just carry it out and plug it in the back of the Suburban Saturday morning. That way loading will be less stressful.

This is a repeat drive of several trips in the past. Not the destination but the timing. We have often traveled on the weekend when we turn the clocks forward. Plus we go from Central to Eastern time zone. So we will gain an hour on the drive from home to St. Augustine (Anastasia SP) on Saturday and then overnight into Sunday we will gain another hour. I think we will make sure we get enough rest and NOT leave Anastasia until the official check-out time of 1pm (I've learned the hard way that Captain Daddy can't push his crew too hard on the morning they lose 2 hours). It's a short drive into town proper for church and lunch though. No crack-of-dawn pulling out kind of thing. It's only two hours to Jetty Park Campground (Cape Canaveral is the listed city there at the Port; next town south is Cocoa Beach). Thus I'd like to get away first thing Saturday from Alabama which is 5-6am and drive the 10 hours via Montgomery-Dothan-Tallahassee-Jacksonville-St.Augustine-Cape Canaveral. It's I10 and I95 in Florida. I could come down I75 through Orlando and head over but I know every crack in the pavement that route from the Fort trips so I am looking forward to the different route (only drove it once this past New Years).

So here is our rough daily schedule:

Saturday-drive home to St. Augustine (Anastasia SP)
Sunday-arrive at Cape Canaveral (Jetty Park Campground). Dinner at FishLips?
Monday-spring training baseball game at Disney (Atlanta Braves & Pittsburgh Pirates) with dinner at Disney Springs (The Edison).
Tuesday-Magic Kingdom day 9am rope drop till after 11pm close. Lunch at Liberty Tree Tavern and Dinner at The Plaza.
Wednesday-down day to rest and recover but we have some neat plans.
Thursday-spring training baseball in Lakeland (Detroit Tigers & Boston Red Sox).
Friday-spring training baseball in Port St. Lucie (New York Mets & Washington Nationals).

Hope to see some cruise ships arrive and depart (I have the schedule), hopefully a rocket launch from the Kennedy Space Center, and enjoy some nice temps and weather.

DD and I were over at the Fort around New Years so that's not on the list this trip (unless I can sneak away from MK on Tuesday on the boat and see the stakes/new resort markings around Pioneer Hall).

Tick tock. More to do still. :hourglass

PS - stay tuned for my Dog-n-Suds Reports....

PPS - plus hoping to get the Mickey's Kitchen Sink Sundae at the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor in MK for the souvenir bowl to add to my collection. It's expensive but I'm going to do it.

I think the take-out side of Beaches-n-Cream had a similar takeout Mickey sundae.
Yes, B&C does have the Mickey Pant's sundae, but ours had more goodies than the one you have a photo of. Ours had Oreos and brownies too.

Hope you get to see the rocket launch! Ive been lucky enough to see the shuttle go up when i was a kid, twice!

Still below freezing here just west of Chicago. I'm glad I did most of the camper prep before I put it away last fall. I've got a check in on 3/20, check out on 4/3. Last year I had my truck detailed before leaving, this year I might get to take the cold weather cover off the front of my Ram. Re-mounted my rear license plate yesterday. It got ripped off by the cover flapping in the breeze when we had two days of 50mph winds about a week ago. I would like to take it out for a little 50 mile run just to check things, but I don't think I can get it out to the road. There is a 20 foot uphill ice section in front of the camper. It is suppose to get above freezing this weekend so it can rain and snow. I know that will make prepping the camper so much more fun. Looking for some warm weather soon.

Sunday-arrive at Cape Canaveral (Jetty Park Campground). Dinner at FishLips?

Ed,
When we went on our Disney cruise, we stayed at Jetty Park Campground. We stayed in one of the small cabins. Just the bare necessities. All we needed and very clean. The bath house was a short walk and was also very clean. We had dinner at Papa Vito's on the first night and Fishlips the second night. we also ate at Southern Charm Café just a short skip from the campground on Astronaut Blvd on our day of departure. Really good.

We have been keeping I64 hot traveling to see the UK baseball team play ball. We are really young this year but they play hard and Coach Mingione is a terrific coach and motivator. Our new Kentucky Proud Park shows a serious commitment to baseball at UK. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I hope to get together a TR of our cruise soon.

Cool that you stayed at Jetty, Steve. If I had known that was your plan, I would have told you my site number and asked for a pic.

A new college ballpark can be invigorating. Bama got one 4 years ago and I've been a season ticket holder for 5 years. But I can walk to the ballpark from my house. :tiptoe: Our head coach is a former KY assistant (spending about 3 years in-between at the Barn) Brad Bohannon (Coach Bo). Seems like a good guy.

Now I'm off to the internet to check out the menus of those restaurants you named. :surfweb:

Looking forward to reading your cruise report.

Less than a week to go, for us! We are coming down from the FL panhandle. DH is thinking about going down the back roads (98/19) and avoid I-75 around the Turnpike & Ocala. We are staying the first night at Thousand Trails in Clermont. Hoping to be able to check into the Fort early on Friday 3/15. If not, we will just park in overflow and go get the rental car from the CCC.

Checked in today at 12pm!! Site wasn't ready when we rolled in at 11:30 but by the time we got our golf cart we got the text! And, we got the loop we requested and our site is perfect! Could not be happier so far!

It was quite a day on Thursday. Getting the TT hitched and ready proved to be a horrible experience as my front electric stabilizer stalled at 2" off the ground. After working on it for 30 minutes I made the executive decision to remove the ENTIRE stabilizer unit from underneath the trailer.

NOTHING was stopping me from leaving on time!

Stopped at CW in Savannah GA and bought 2 scissor jacks and they bolted up perfectly to my existing holes in my frame brackets!

Back up camera stopped working just outside of Savannah and traffic stalled around Jacksonville....

Spent Thursday at the KOA in St Augustine so we could see the beach and have an easy ride to WDW.

Friday has been a better day!!!

And it wouldn't be a trip to the Fort without a little drama along the way.

I hope I had my quota of drama today, Jim. I worked a half day this morning and was planning to take the afternoon off to run errands, pack, etc. and have a leisurely evening and rest up for the sling shot out of here tomorrow morning. About 1030am I get a call from the Fraud Abuse Center of my bank saying my credit card number just bought some Popeye's Fried Chicken in New Jersey this morning and asked if the charge was an authorized one? Now, I love me some Popeye's but the card was in my hip pocket in Alabama at the moment. So I spent a portion of the afternoon getting the cancelled card replaced same day and disputing the Popeye's charge. Plus on Friday afternoon before spring break starts and school lets out there's NOBODY on the road, right?

Weather forecast is looking good for central Florida next week. Highs near 80F and lows in the high 60F's. Not much mention of showers although that could change. I think I'm going to pack all shorts (no long pants this trip) and take a chance. That's the kind of live-life-on-the-edge risk taker I am. I like to live life dangerously.

Almost D-day. :car: :drive:

Wait we have a Pop eye's in NJ? LoL. I know of a few other places with better food than chain fast food. Local supermarkets have some killer no pun intended fried chicken. There are few places that rock great BBQ and chicken. Of course we have real pizza. So I would be *** why did you use it for Popeye's ?

Allan,

I love you, buddy, and I'm sure the Circle K down on the corner has some awesome fried chicken at 3am under the heat lamps. But lots have places have plain ol' fried chicken. How many in NJ do it with Cajun spice OTHER than Popeye's?

See the 1972 entry: https://popeyes.com/our-story/

This ain't the bland leading the bland here. Popeye's has sizzle, crack, and *just* a little bit o' heat.

Of course we have real pizza.

I thought that was New York City. But I hear that New Jersey had great cupcakes. :stir: You must be so proud.

To keep this FW/WDW related, I'll post some pix of my Edison dinner plus the Dog-n-Suds reports for you. (Actually looking forward to the Edison).

It's getting late, brother. I gotta turn in now.

Bama Ed

PS - I know that places like Chick Filet, Popeye's, and Dreamland have attempted to educate the taste buds of the unwashed masses but it's still a large task in front of them. :thumbsup2

It's nice they have the fraud alert calls now, but timing on this one was not ideal. At least this one was legit. When we were racing, our cards would regularly get shut down when were buying fuel. I don't know why. 200 gallons of diesel (2 trucks with 100 gallon capacity), 40 gallons of Premium 93 octane (for the race cars) and generally 15-20 gallons of regular unleaded for another vehicle with kids/spouses following behind. All bought within 10-15 minutes on the same card. Trying to explain that we really did buy all that is priceless.

Since I could not fit Animal Kingdom into our Fort stay and I have a real craving for a Dole whip with coconut rum :drinking1we are making an afternoon trip over to there today. Stalked the website all morning to get the FPs I wanted, thought I was going to wear out the refresh button :p. Just goes to show you can get FPs on short notice, just got to be willing to carry around your phone or iPad while doing the laundry, dishes and other household chores :goodvibes.

Credit card fraud, ugh that sucks. Glad they alerted you before they bought out Walmart, lol. Yes, it is very warm here, shorts should be fine. Next cool front is expected the week of the 17th, was really hoping it would hold off until we arrived, but of course Florida weather is always unpredictable, so we will just keep eye out and not pack until the day before.

Safe travels and look forward to your continued report.
