My son does not like coasters and gets motion sickness from screens. He really does not even want go to universal but our daughter really wants to see Harry Potter. He does like Harry Potter. We are also travelling with my parents, I don't see anything they will be able to do. The most my parents can do is Pirates at wdw. What can I have them do while we tour with our daughter? I guess they can hang by the pool? I feel like its a total waste of money to even but them park tickets, am I wrong?

Well, you could get motion sickness medicine. Maybe try it ahead of time at a local amusement park or just some day to see if it makes you drowsy...
Also, there is no rhyme or reason- nor consensus- on what rides trigger issues for people. Some people think they can't do screen rides but turns out most are fine and only a few are a problem. Or they figure out that if they occasionally close their eyes then they are fine. I have no motion issues but the Simpsons was awful for me.
The themeing at Universal is amazing. There are great snacks and fun things to do even if the rides don't work. But there are plenty of rides that should be ok!

He is 12. I am trying to have some things lined up for him and my parents so I won't see him sulking that he is not riding anything. He is a good kid and knows this trip is for his sister, I just thought I should have some suggestions for my son and parents to do.

Oh 12. Probably too old for the water play areas. Especially by himself.

Does he like Marvel? IoA has a Marvel section.

Honestly, I wouldn't spend the money for a ticket. Can they go to Volcano Bay? Pick up a day at a Disney park?

It is a total waste of money for your son and parents. Are your parents capable of taking him to another park that day? Maybe Disney or a water park?

That's super silly to say it'd be a waste of money! For one day, there is more than enough to entertain oneself!

Men in Black
Animal Actors Show
Horror Make Up Show
Raptor Encounter
Camp Jurassic (yes, a 12 year old would still have fun there- my 14yo had a blast as did I!)
Hogwarts Express
Diagon Alley, Knockturn Alley
trying all types of Butterbeer
Simpsons land (photo ops galore and giant pink donuts!)
The Mummy (it's a coaster but not a major one- its inside so can't be too big!)
all the water rides
Shrek

I bet if you really looked you could easily plot out a great day. :)

Hi I didn't see how many days you are going for? If it is one then I agree with PP's list with things to do. I would look all these up and see. The HP worlds to me alone are amazing to walk around and see them. You could put some time into the resort pools depending on when you are going. If you are going for more than one day then maybe you would want them to look into another park in the area or like another pp said Volcano Bay.

I can spend a week in the parks and not go on a single ride. There are many shows to see, and just the atmosphere and scenery is enough to keep me occupied (along with the shopping)

Absolutely!!

We know many folks who don’t ride anything but still have a fabulous time at Universal.......and a 12 year old certainly can have fun.......

Potter areas alone can fill up a whole day!

An easy over the counter motion stickness medication that I use for planes and trains is Bonine. It's chewable and one pill works for 24 hours. Instead of a park ticket (not knowing how long the trip is), what about letting your son and grandparents do a day at City Walk. I've heard the mini-golf is amazing, there's a movie theatre, and tons of stores.

Cabana Bay Resort has bowling, which I think you can use as long as you staying at one of the Universal Resort hotels. You have to pay for the mini-golf, bowling and movie, but if you're not buying park tickets for them, it could work. Make that the day his sister does roller coasters.

Inside the parks there's stuff he could do while she does the screen-based rides. There's a parade and different shows, performances, and character meet and greets throughout the parks. There are also different pay to play arcades in the parks. If he likes Harry Potter, while she's doing the rides, he can see the Harry Potter shows (there's 4 of them) and browse in the Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley stores. The detailing and theming is amazing. I think I saw that someone on-line created a scavanger hunt, so maybe look into one of those. Depending on your budget, buy one of the interactive wands so he can do spells while exploring Diagon Alley.

My boys don't do big rides either, but they love going to Universal. I took my mom the first time (hubby couldn't go), and she's the biggest ride chicken ever. She enjoyed it too - enough to go back for a mother daughter week with my sisters and I later this year.

I would skip Mummy - even my "I like some roller coasters" kid only rode that once on the last trip. The big roller coasters, the HP rides, and the Simpsons ride are the only ones that were really all that intense from our viewpoint.

But there are the water rides, Suess land, Spiderman and Men In Black (screens and scenery around the vehicle track), Transformers (similar but with a bit more motion from the ride vehicle), Shrek (get the non-moving seats for this movie / show), ET, Kang and Koda in Simpsons, numerous shows, fun shopping, the awesome theming in the HP areas, wandering around Springfield, butter beer and butter beer ice cream, and watching all the people get soaked on Ripsaw Falls.

I'm very sensitive to motion sickness. I find that with the behind-the-ear patch, I can ride 90% of the rides at Universal. Rip Ride Rocket was doable, but right at my limit. Dramamine Less Drowsy (aka Bonine/ Benadryl) also work, but might make him drowsy.

If you don't want to go that route, I agree that there's TONS of stuff for your 12 year old to do. If I was 12 I'd ride Men in Black all day and be perfectly happy, plus he could ride Kong, Jurassic Park, Shrek, water rides, etc.

Speaking of water rides - does he like water slides? Many 12 year olds I know love them. Perhaps your parents could take him to Volcano Bay? He'd probably love it, and it would give your parents something to do.

Just don't do the Simpsons! We did almost every other virtual reality in both IOA and US and that one was the only one that made all three of us feel awful. Rip, Roarin, Rocket would be a pass for me again, but if I had to do one, it wouldn't be the Simpsons!

we really enjoyed Kong and Fast and Furious and of course the Harry Potter rides.

Just a word of caution, OP, about two of these.
1. Men in Black spins a bunch. If someone is sensitive to motion, this may NOT be a ride for them.
2. The Mummy - not a ride for those with motion sickness but a super fun ride!

Thanks everyone!! We have 2 days there and I am sure they will enjoy, some non ride things I was not aware of, I am a disney gal for the most part and I am pretty unaware of things universal, I have to get myself up to speed.
