No I get it I live on Long Island which is one of the “red” parts of NYs

I guess my point after all this is that being from NY every time I ever voted there were candidates from all parties. So if climate of politics recently changes or u just want to vote opposite.... it’s not as easy as just voting opposite.
In lots of places you need to write in the name which I’m sorry. Too much work to vote

No. Alaska just had a hand recount of a legislative race. Also didn't change the outcome in Florida after an automatic recount was required by law.

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Latest on a tied Alaska House race that could decide control of Alaska state government (all times local):

5:52 p.m.

Republican Bart LeBon has won an Alaskan state House race after a recount showed him winning by one vote.

State of Alaska election officials said a Friday recount in Juneau showed LeBon beat Democrat Kathryn Dodge.

Before Friday’s recount, both candidates were tied with 2,661 votes apiece.

A mystery ballot found on a table in a voting precinct was tossed Friday after officials said it was determined to be a spoiled ballot from a voter who had made a mistake on it, told officials and then filled out a new ballot.

Dodge has five days to decide whether she will appeal the outcome.

If LeBon’s win holds, the GOP would control the House, Senate and governor’s office.
The Alaska election ain't over, I assure you.
The Florida election had such national scrutiny put on it, that the original winners held. If not for that, may have been different.

I live in a very red state - one of the reddest, actually.

After the last mid-terms, I started thinking re blue & red states & how it must feel to live in state that usually ends up going opposite how you vote.

But, I started wondering how it it would feel if I lived in a blue state & voted the way I normally do, but my state was consistently opposite my vote... how would I feel? Or vice versa - someone who votes blue but lives in a consistent red state.

I understand the electoral college & why we need it, & this isn't about the electoral college.

But I think, after a while, it'd start to feel a little depressing & like "why even vote at all?"

Welcome to my world in California. For the first time in my life, I'd vote yes to split the state in half.

You do understand you don't write in the vote for a candidate that is officially running and on the ballot correct? You understand election officials can't only list one name if there is more than one candidate? I feel like you still don't understand the process and think states can legally list only one candidate and require another to be written in. That isn't how it works.

Maybe look up the Secretary of State's website - or other state election official - for the state your friend is in to find out what the election laws are in that state.

That would be helpful and provide the knowledge which you serk.

Come to Cook County, Chicago. There are lots of offices with no Republicans running. Generally, if no opposite party alternative, the opposing party and possible candidates feel the other person running is unbeatable.

I lived in an area of New Jersey where no Democrats appeared on the ballot for local elections or state representatives (of course, there WERE Democrats on the ballot for state wide races, and Congress). The reason: It was so overwhelmingly Republican (something like 8 or 9 registered Republicans per 1 registered Democrat) that the party decided not to run a candidate for those races. Now any willing Democrat COULD have placed his/her name on the ballot, but there would be no party money backing them up, so you take a very difficult (at best) situation and make it impossible. It was also a closed primary system, so literally Democrats were frozen out of voting in local races UNLESS they registered Republican (because often there were primary contests for local races, but only between Republicans).

I don't find it odd in the least. Obviously, in Nebraska there were Democrats running for state wide office. Just the local races are sometimes all Republican. I get it.

I do like the California system of putting the top two primary contest winners on the ballot in the general election (even if both are from the same party) because it still gives the people a choice in the general election.

The local races in Nebraska are officially nonpartisan though. Their unicameral legislature also has a top two primary. It’s probably not a full time job though, with a $12,000 annual salary.

I’m still trying to understand what the issue was. Only two statewide races were unopposed, all Congressional races had a Democratin the general election, and no other races in the state had any political affiliation on the ballot.

I live in a very red state - one of the reddest, actually.

And, in one of our local elected offices (I can't remember which one - maybe the County Clerk or Tax Assessor?), for the past few elections, there has been only one choice, a Democrat. And I always vote for the person.

Along these same lines...

After the last mid-terms, I started thinking re blue & red states & how it must feel to live in state that usually ends up going opposite how you vote.

For instance, I live in a red state, &, most of the time (most - not all!), I end up voting red - not necessarily because I'm purposefully voting red - that's just how it ends up. (I don't even think I'm an official registered Republican). Anyway, most of the time, my state goes the way of my vote.

But, I started wondering how it it would feel if I lived in a blue state & voted the way I normally do, but my state was consistently opposite my vote... how would I feel? Or vice versa - someone who votes blue but lives in a consistent red state.

My last ballot had unopposed from both major parties. There were also a couple spots where there were 2 or 3 choices, but only 1 “major party” choice.

Yeah, California is huge, and the needs and wants of the various parts are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
This year I took trips to Eureka, and to Anaheim. Can't get any more different that those two communities.

Hi,
I love these boards and I live by common sense rules. I am finding out this is not so common.

Full disclosure. I live in NY which is a “blue” state. I have only voted in this state. I am a registered Democrat. I go to my polling place and I can choose a democrat or republican candidate. I don’t vote blue always I vote the person and their agenda.

Here is where I LOOSE MY MIND!!!!

My BFF moved to Nebraska. She is a registered Democrat. Apparently this is a red state and she was MAILED the people running.
NO DEMOCRATS ON THE BALLOT!
You have to write the name in!

I’m sorry but obviously this is extremely bias IMO ! Please educate me otherwise!
I live in a blue state and their are republicans on ballot.

So please correct if I’m wrong System is rigged.... anyone who might want to vote “the othe party” last minute can’t because they are NOT on ballot!!!

Honestly please help me understand this madness!
Kerri

smh "madness" - this is "madness"? Please don't "loose" your mind. Seriously, don't LOSE your mind.

I think if you are this upset that some parts of the country have a handful of uncontested races, then you should seriously consider moving to one of those areas and filing to run for whichever party is not represented.

New York and Nebraska, damn near twins. Lol
Except for this part.

Yes, and we pack 8 million people in the lower blue part like sardines and condition us into thinking it's normal to live this way. :crowded::crowded::eek::crowded::upsidedow:tilt::worried::crowded::crowded:

OP here
I guess I was just a little shell shocked. From NY where diversity and and abundance of choices is the norm.

On a whole other note.... the way this country votes is crazy. Some states can vote early. Should be uniform but a whole other convo LOL
Thanks for all of the contributions everyone and I’m proud that this thread stayed civil:-)

You must be from NYC or one of the major cities if diversity and abundance of choice is the norm. I'm from a part of the state where there isn't much diversity, though we're trying.

Yes I grew up in NYC. I now live on Long Island which is typical “red” territory. My friend Always lived NYC besides Smith college and study abroad Cape Town South Africa.
So I guess we were just shocked at the reality of a lot of elections.
Peace
