I admit I am a tech novice, but is it possible to copy a smiley from another forum and use it on this forum or are they site specific?

Depends...usually you can right click a smiley and save it off...then store it with your online pictures in a place such as Photobucket....then past the link from there.

This post is coming from a MacBook Pro. Made the jump and went ahead and left the PC world. I am having problems connecting to the router because I forgot the network password and buying anything from the store because it does not recognize my address. They suggested I try again in the morning and if it still doesn't work, email store support tomorrow.

We shall see if I made the right decision or not. Like the keyboard setup and the mouse scrolling options so that is good.

Thanks for the advice. I think.

I see some buzz about this issue, with some people suggesting that this happens mainly to people using documents saved in the old Excel format vs. the newer format. Is that the case for you? It may be as simple as saving the document in the latest format for Excel.

And we have a winner, save it as a 2010 Excel file and now it sort just fine. Thanks Eric!

Print Spooler Service won't start.

The depandancies are started.

When I start it manually - it says started. But then it stops itself.

Anyone...?

First, if you haven't already - reboot.

If it is still happening, try this:
Go to System Properties>Advanced
Select Performance>Settings
Select Data Execution Prevention
Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
Click Add
Paste this in to the file name box of the window that opens:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe
Select Open
Select OK when you receive the warning
Select Apply

If that still doesn't work, check here: http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

Thanks...

Tried all that as well...

I think it's time for Factory Restore (it's my parents computer not mine).

Luckily all they have is Pictures, which we can back up before we start.

Gotta love Windows! :lmao:

Weird question, and if it's against any rules, please delete and let me know: Has anyone gotten a Red Ring of Death on their Xbox 360(Three red lights and no worky)?

I second this. As long as you are running Windows 7 or Vista(ugh!), Microsoft Security Essentials is all you need.

How about XP? I'm only using Security Essentials but still get viruses now and then. (8 yr olds don't listen when you tell them not to Google "free ipad".)

If you have XP, I recommend using the free AVG Free for anti-virus and run MalWare Bytes' Anti-Malware every now and then.

I did not realize this thread was here. Oh great Kung Fu IT masters, my phone is now faster than my netbook. So, I am looking for a new laptop, netbook, or tablet to buy. I read thru here and see that Apple is highly recommended. Currently, I just use my netbook for fun (web, games). My desktop is 5+ years old. Other than Ipad, what do you like? I do have a budget, but welcome all advice.

I guess a new notebook purchase is quite a personal choice. They really have dropped in price. I've seen the AMD quad core processors with 6 gigs of RAM and oodles of storage space for $449 (HP laptop).

But if Windows is THAT slow (which mine was as well). Some things you can try are:

1) AV scan with latest updates
2) Spybot Search and Destroy - it's free, and effective.
3) CC cleaner - also free - effective. It will clean temp files, and registry

And something that I almost guarantee will speed up your PC - stop all your unneeded programs and services at startup.

5) Start > Run > MSCONFIG - go to the STARTUP tab, and take the checkmark off of almsot everything (except AV software, and others you KNOW you need).
Then go to the SERVICES tab - select HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES, and then disable the rest.
If you find you need something you disabled, you can add it back later, and reboot again.

6) Restore to factory default (Backup everything first).

Another recommendation I have (for the future) - is don't store anything on your PC hard drive. Buy an external HD, they are dirt cheap now, I saw a 2TB drive for $99 yesterday. That makes option 6 a piece of cake. Just make sure you have all your programs.

Good luck.

Thanks for advice. I originally had McAfee on my desktop and finally dropped it after years of price increases and repeated downloads and changes. I went to the free CA from Time Warner. It was junk and slowed my machine to a crawl. I installed the Microsoft Suite Essentials and the machine has regained its speed.

Thanks. I will try these steps. Honestly, I got the netbook from Toys R Us a couple years ago for less than $200, so it never had a lot of speed. And, I don't have anything saved. I do have it on wireless network with my desktop so I can view pictures.

I have stayed away from hard drives and have been backing up my files on the flash drives. I probably should just to a hard drive the next time I fill one up. I only back up pictures, music, and tax returns.

Thanks all. I was able to delete some programs and my netbook is running more efficiently now. Still will consider Ipad, but I need to pay off August Panama City Beach vacation, and have October WDW vacation and property taxes due in November and December.

OK IT Gurus!

I have a multifunction printer in our office that is able to send emails to folks by scanning documents and attaching them as pdf files.

All of the sudden 2 months ago it decided it wanted to stop working. It acts like it's sending it and then you go to your inbox to check for the email and it's not there.

I've quadruple checked all of the email settings...account, password, smtp server, authentication etc...

The kicker is, I use that same account through outlook with the same settings and it works fine!!! :scared1:

I tried a different smtp server and login etc...(different email account/domain all together) and it works fine - so it's not the machine.

Would there be something in the smtp side of things that would differentiate a copier/multi-function machine from a standard pc to prohibit it from working?

This has got me baffled! :headache:
