What NOT to do during the anthem..

Just wanted to say that I'm as American as they come, but "O Canada" may be the perfect anthem. I can't help but get a little misty whenever I hear it. Beautiful song.

See, I love the American anthem. I know it by heart and usually sing it every time I hear it. I learned it watching hockey lol

A few generations ago. I'm not that old, but in my youth respecting your elders was something everyone was taught to do. It saddens me, when I see parents allow their kids to disrespect their elders, especially their grandparents.

Sorry, to go OT OP. Back to the Canadian Anthem.

No... in your youth you were fortunate enough to be taught to respect your elders and because you were a child you assumed that your reality was everyone's reality.

Believe me when I say that some parents in EVERY generation have allowed their children to disrespect their elders. And there are no more of these parents today, than there were 30 years ago, or 100 years ago.

I'm sure you've seen this quote before:

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

This quote was said to be attributed to Socrates by Plato. However, it's first appearance was in a book called "Personality and Adjustment" published in 1953, and was probably made up by the authors of that book. However, would you like to know when this quote was MOST popular?

During the sixties. You know, a few generations ago... possibly even before you were born. The quote may be fake, but it hits on something that is undeniably true - every generation thinks its youth are disrespectful and lacking in morals. Not a single one ever looks back and goes, "You know what? Kids these days are so much more moral and respectful than they were when I was young. Parents really are doing something right for a change!"

(Well, I actually say that a lot about my own kids, but I was a terrible child.)

I hope it doesn't put my citizenship at risk, but I really like the Russian anthem.

Is the Russian anthem the same as the old Soviet anthem? I liked that, after hearing it so often during the Olympics.

Edit. Looked it up. Yep, same tune, different lyrics.

Don't feel bad, we don't even know our anthem https://www.theguardian.com/music/2...ralias-unofficial-national-anthems-since-1973

I think Americans, as a whole, take all of their patriotic trappings much more seriously. The Canadian national anthem (as you will notice on its Wikipedia page) has been altered many, many times.

On Canada Day you'll see Canadians walking around wearing the Canadian flag as a cape. I can't imagine an American doing that to their flag!

ReclaimAustralian and UPF have made me too embarrassed to even fly my flag, Americans would be horrified to see them in action at rallies.

You state that as fact, when It's only your opinion. Life experience has lead me to a different opinion.

I just got back from a liquor store run to get rum, beef jerky, and smok. . . errrrr. . . just returned from the health food store after a kale run. . . :rolleyes1

. . .and I was listening to "Jim Rome" and he has glossed them "The 3 Tenors and The Flat Earther Kook".

no No NO!!! You don't do this.

It's bad enough to butcher your own national anthem (as PP said, Roseanne Barr learned that) but to change the lyrics of another countries anthem? :sad2: Even more disrespectful IMHO.

And his hope was to bring us together? Well, you brought us together in solidifying you're a doofus.

Harsh, but fair.

Actually, the Tenors are Canadian (they even used to be called The Canadian Tenors). They all hold Canadian citizenship, though Remigio Pereira was born in the US. For some reason, I couldn't find anything suggesting he holds dual citizenship - maybe he renounced?

Anyway, he definitely butchered his own national anthem, and not another country's.

Oops. My fault. I thought he was strictly a US citizen.

Who's the doofus now? Yep, that'd be me. ;)

ETA: you still don't recreate an anthem even if it's yours. :)

:wave2: Here's the other 3 verses - I love it too!

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea.
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons, and gentle maidens rise,
To keep thee steadfast through the years
From East to Western sea.
Our own beloved native land!
Our True North, strong and free!

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our Dominion in thy loving care;
Help us to find, O God, in thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the better Day,
We ever stand on guard.

I clicked a couple links out of the article you linked a few posts back. Check out that graphic!! The big ice-wall that is Antarctica actually gives the world a real neat, Game-of-Thrones'y vibe! And I think those Australians in jevs post above yours would make EXCELLENT men of the Night's Watch!

Not cool. The other 3 tenors say they didn't know he was going to do that. The fourth tenor was scheduled to come to my city and have his own concert. It's been cancelled. I'm not sure if it was the venue that cancelled or what. I think he's the least popular person in Canada today.

I absolutely believe them. You just have to watch the subtle double take the tall blonde guy next to him does, to know they didn't know anything about this.

Which makes his "firing" all the more appropriate. This wasn't just an ill-advised political stunt, it was incredibly unprofessional and a betrayal of his fellow performers.

He's going to have a tough time coming back from this!

I've seen an anthem modified by the singer before a baseball game. It was also a rather surprising person who did it. It was actually "LDS Day" where they coordinated with the local LDS Church for someone to sing the anthem, and one player who was a member of the church caught the ceremonial first pitch tossed by a representative of the church.

The irony was that it was a common flippant modification of the anthem that some people in the stands would use, that substituted the name of the team in the lyrics. However, I never expected that anyone brought on the field would do that while miked up.

That being said, I've worked with Europeans. One asked me as an American, why is the national anthem played before any routine athletic contest. It seemed rather bizarre to them. They told me that perhaps it would be used for international competition, but not as something routine between two domestic teams.
