I got this email yesterday:
Dear Ebay Member,
Recently we attempted to authorize payment from your credit card we have on file for you, but it was declined.

I received a similar email a couple of months ago, and it was legitimate. However, I did not click through to eBay through the link in the email just in case- I simply opened a new window in my browser and went to eBay by typing in the internet address myself and accessing my account info. I agree that the best thing to do is to verify if these emails are legitimate by NEVER clicking on links in emails and going to the "your account" section by typing the web address straight into your browser.

This has been very informative. I thought I would tell you how I got scammed on the internet. I went to a website to order a magazine. It said the payment and security was done through yahoo so I figured it was legit. Wrong. Fortunately I only lost $13. I will not buy from the internet anymore. If I can't hold the item in my hand when I pay for it, I don't need the item.

Oh, I don't know if I could live without being able to buy on the Internet!!

I bought over 50% of my Christmas presents off the Internet.

I buy my airfare and my rental car on the Internet for our WDW trips.

BUT I mostly buy from legit websites like KBtoys, Amazon, walmart.com, Landsend, Expedia, and National etc...

I also buy from Ebay a lot and, knock on wood, I've never really been ripped off. I only buy from them if the seller has high, positive feedback. I know it's a risk but it's a risk I've been lucky with so far. I don't buy things that are more than $40 really anyway.

I can understand your fear, though, after reading this thread!!

After reading this thread, I changed my paypal password (since it was the same password I have used on non-financial sites) and received the following email:

The password for XXXXXXXX's PayPal account was changed
on February 06, 2003.

If you did not authorize this change, please contact us
immediately using the link below:

https://www.paypal.com...ap_default
(I changed this for obvious reasons -- it took me to their log-in page, with my account name already filled in)

Thanks for using PayPal!

Note: When you log in to your PayPal account, be sure that the
website's URL always begins with "https://www.paypal.com/".
The "s" in "https" at the beginning of the URL means you are
logging into a secure page. If the URL does not begin with
https, you are not on a PayPal page.

Pam

I did the same thing yesterday - changed both PayPal and Ebay passwords yesterday so they are unique (of each other and other sites).

I got the email from paypal confirming the password was changed, and advising what to do if this was an unauthorized change.

I linked my paypal to a savings account with $10 in it. This way I can still accept payments but cannot make any payments with it.
