Thanksgiving trip - some questions

Hi,

I'm so glad I found this section on the DIS! Besides DL and WDW, Vegas is one of our favorite places to vacation!

We are planning a family trip to Vegas the week of Thanksgiving...Our family consists of me, DH, and DS's Tyler (21) and Dylan (16).

We are planning on staying at the Hilton Grand Vacation-Flamingo in a 1 bedroom king suite. We are booked for 4 nights.

I have a few questions...

1) We would like to go to the Grand Canyon...how long does it take to drive there and back--can we do it in a day? We will have a rental car. Anything that we should know about the drive?

2) Where should we eat Thanksgiving dinner?

3) What is the weather like? Are the pools open?

It's about 275 miles to the Grand Canyon - roughly
5 hours one way. That 10 hour round trip makes
a very long day.

Lawry's The Prime Rib hosts a great Thanksgiving
dinner every year. Reservations are needed.

Rio Carnival World Buffet has quite a spread for
Thanksgiving. But all the buffets are crazy busy
on Thanksgiving.

If you want to go more upscale Postrio at the
Venetian is amazing. Reservations are needed.

America Restaurant at New York-New York is is
$16.95 per person.

I really liked the Thanksgiving dinner at Imperial
Palace Teahouse of all places. Only $17.99 per
person they had all the usual fixin's, good food and
it wasn't too crowded.

It actually get quite chilly in Vegas at the end of
November - 60's during the day and 40's at night.
Most of the pools are closed.

I just wanted to second Lawry's and their prime rib. We had a big family gathering there (about 20 adults) two years ago and it was fabulous. Didn't feel "Vegas-y" but very classy. Not to mention dee-lish!

We went for my b-day (Nov 1st) and froze to death. I don't know if that is normal, but we mostly stayed inside.

It's a great time of year to go, though.

PS - Have a great time at DL in two weeks!

My family went to the GC on Veterans Day last year and it SNOWED! Maybe take a bus trip instead?

I second Lawry's. You absolutely will need a reservation. My mom was in town for Thanksgiving last year and we went and it was AWESOME. DS9 was the only one who had turkey; everybody else had prime rim. The best.

Weather will probably be cold. Expect the pools to be closed, or if you find a pool that's open, you may find yourself enjoying your chaise lounge in a tracksuit.
