Tell me about rope drop

Can someone tell me about rope drop? What goes on? Is it worth fighting the crowd to be there at rope drop? I'm specifically thinking at MK but I would love to hear what goes on at any of the parks.

I've been to Disney probably over 10 times. Even worked there for one semester in the WDWCP and have never made it to a rope drop (night owl I guess, usually closing the parks) The only time I was ever at MK that early was one trip where we had CRT ressies before park opening and were allowed in before rope drop.

Tell me what I am missing!

I've seen the opening celebration, which I assume was "rope drop," at MK and it was cool and definitely pumped you up for your day at Disney. A train pulled up and Mickey and few other characters got off along with a family to welcome you to MK with a song. It was very cool and like I said got you psyched for your day at the park. And for me that was big because I wasn't that big into Disney but after that trip I was converted.

To me, the show at rope drop is very cute and fun -- but that's not the purpose of going for rope drop. The purpose is to be one of the first ones in the park and start your touring early. When people say "get there at rope drop", that's usually what they're really talking about.

If you want to see the "full" Magic Kingdom Welcome show,be SURE not to go on an EMH Morning day. Most of the time on EMH Morning days, they only do a VERY abbreviated show.:) IF you are a BIG Walt Disney World fan, this opening show is a "must-see" and it may even bring a tear to your eye.:) It is best appreciated form directly in front of the Mickey Floral.:)

I don't know if there is a show at DHS...unless you consider watching all the people doing the TSM dance (resembles the potty dance from childhood). At rope drop the CMs walk those "dancing in the streets" nearly to TSM and let them go for a free-for-all for the ride and FPs.

I love the MK opening rope drop "show"....Echoing others, I'll also say that seeing the characters ride up in the train and the catchy song really do get you pumped up for the day and for being at Disney. We try to see it once per trip.

There is "normally" a show at DHS -- Otto the director comes out and everyone waiting at the rope is a character in the movie -- they give everyone lines to say and the Family of the Day comes out and rides in a car, etc., etc. They did not do that at Christmas time when we were there for rope drop.

I kinda figured the did something, but didn't b/c of the holiday times. It was fun/ny hearing everyone talking about their strategies while waiting though.

We've done MK rope drop two years in a row...it's a tradition I hope to continue with...if you can consider something a tradition after only two years. We started off our 2007 trip at MK...we were there for rope drop but, didn't know there would be a show of any kind. We were pretty close to the entrance and ended up not being able to see very well and regretted that. It is a really cute show...singing and dancing but, when the train comes in with the whistle blowing and all of the characters climb off...it brought a tear to my eye. I wished that we could have seen it better and take some pictures. It was my goal, for our 2008 trip to be at ropedrop at MK, on the first day of our trip and sure enough we were. We got some great pictures and got a spray of "pixie dust." I hope to start any future trips in the same way...thus making a Disney tradition.

If you look closely, you can see the "pixie dust," the silver, sparkly things.

We had the awesome experience of being chosen as Family of the Day at Epcot last Saturday. While everyone else stood behind the rope, we were taken in front of the fountain where we got this group shot with all the characters. Our buttons say "Honorary Citizen of Walt Disney World".

Next, we hopped in a real Test Track car and they drove us over to the ride.

We rode Test Track twice without anybody else there and were then escorted over to Mission Space and personally walked through the Fast Pass line by a CM.

In addition to the rides we were also given two "No Strings Attached" passes good for any attraction. We used one to skip the line at Character Connection and saved the other as a momento since we had to leave by noon to get on our plane home.

I do not fight crowds for rope drop. I do rope drop to AVOID crowds and get to ride a bunch of rides without a wait.

We saw you there! Congrats! How cool! We left that day at noon as well....had to get on the road.

How cool to be chosen to be Family of the Day! What a great way to end your time at WDW...Congratulations!!

One of the CMs videotaped us and the crowd that morning for us. I plan on watching it tomorrow. Were you up at the front of the rope? If so, what'd you have on? I'll look for you while I'm watching it for the 1st time.

Hard to believe tomorrow is a week since we were at WDW :sad1: .

It was definitely the highlight of our trip. Throughout the two weeks we were there we also had a few other great experiences--chosen as the First Family at American Adventure one time, first family at Character Connection one morning (which means you get a group photo will all the characters before they break off to their individual spots), and DS woke up Tinkerbell one morning at MK--but actually opening Epcot and riding in that Test Track car takes the cake.

I'm a big believer in being at rope drop. You can get so much more done in that first hour or two than you'll be able to the rest of the day in many cases. Paying attention where to stand in order to be chosen for special experiences doesn't hurt either! In addition to being Family of the Day at Epcot last week, we've also been chosen for our own personal safari before park opening at AK once as well as had DS chosen to carry the rope and get first safari two or three times. My big dream is to open MK though--I absolutely love the entire morning opening with the Main Street singers, train, characters, and Family of the Day. I've never been there early enough to see them pick a family for that one, so don't know where to stand to make it a reality for me.

Go to Youtube and search for "Disney rope drop." There are some good videos. The Magic Kingdom one really gets me excited for our upcoming trip!

The only rope drop I really enjoyed was at MK. It's definitely worth going to. I like how they have a family open the park with all the characters on the train station. It really makes for great photo ops.

Ha, so true! I somehow managed to get to the very front of rope drop at DHS in October. I won't lie, I was a little nervous b/c those "dancing" people behind me were chomping at the bit. I walk fast, but that was a bit much, even for me. :scared1:

We were the "First Family" in 2003. It was an AMAZING experience! We arrived about an hour befor hte park opened. They took us by car to toontown where we met a million characters. They all signed the certificate they printed out for us with the date and such. It was just AWESOME! I still have our "pixie dust" that we got to throw in the air!!!!
