My wife and I spent some time this weekend in Ventura county where we found this nice little hotel literally on the beach. We ate at a couple places within walking distance while there. I've included links and a breif review below. This location is quite a ways from Disneyland and in the opposite direction from San Diego, so it may not be a good fit for those who are making a quick trip to the Disney/San Diego area, but if you are considering a drive up the coast, this is alternative to some of the chain hotels.

First - Inn on the Beach.
This is a nice little hotel with about 24 rooms in total. We stayed in 208. This room is at the end and is just a little larger than the others. This room has a king bed. All rooms have flat screen TVs (but not HD content), an in-room fridge and a gas fireplace. This room also included a Jacuzzi tub. I'm not sure if the other rooms have these or not. What all rooms DO have is quick and ready access to the beach. All rooms on the second floor and above have a spectacular view of the ocean. The ground floor rooms will only be looking at a large sand berm.

I want to be clear about something though. This is an old hotel and it looks like an old hotel. Don't expect high-end accomodations here. The place is clean and free from smells but it is old. What you pay for here is the view. We pulled our screen door shut and layed on our bed and watched the waves breaking on the beach. You can close the drapes for privacy and still hear the ocean. With the fireplace flickering on the walls and the ocean crashing nearby and a comfortable bed, I don't much care if the wallpaper is lifting in places or if the wardrobe door sticks or of there is no coffee maker or microwave in the room. I most certainly don't care if the TV even works, let alone that it doesn't have HD content. The free breakfast is basically COSTCO muffins, Orange Juice and Coffee. If you want more than that, you'll have to take a stroll.

The front desk staff is very friendly, we talked to three different people during our stay. They know and love this area (Seaward Village). Don't be afraid to ask.

As for the two places we ate at, all I can say is that they were true gems. These are places I would normally never consider stopping at, but I checked the YELP reviews and they were encouraging. We were not disappointed. I could write more but I would say our epxerience was consistent with the 4 star YELP reviews so most of what I would write would just be redundant.
