Hi All, so we have our plans firm for our trip south to Disney, but still trying to figure out good places to stop on the way back north. We are going Oct 19-27 and will have 1-2 nights to get back to CT. What are some good places that we could stop probably SC north on I-95. We are considering Point South KOA, but think we may want to get further north before we end the first day. Any suggestions for SC/NC and then hopefully MD- southern NJ.

Bypass I-95 in DC and Baltimore, and think we will do 287 around in NJ.

We've stayed at Pedro's at the SC/NC border, totally fine for an overnight and we'd stop there again.

We really like RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids NC if you want to go further, they have a line of sites meant for overnighting and you just put your $ in an envelope. But that said, they were totally full when we traveled in July of this year. I kind of forgot to think about vacationing local/regional campers...and also folks like us who would normally just overnight at a wally world if the weather is cooler.

So that night we ended up going further to a place called South 40 in Petersburg, VA. It is an old KOA. Not cheap for an overnight, but they had hookups and laundry so we were happy. We also heard good things about the restaurant at the entrance of the campground. I'd stop there again.

Then north of there we usually swing out north of Richmond to cut over to 81 and catch 84. We've done the Americamps just north of Richmond, not recently, but it was a fine overnight. In recent years since getting a class C we just overnight at a walmart or casino. We have stayed at the Pocono Downs Casino and at the walmarts in Shippensburg and Hazle Township (the Hazle one is the one we hit the most)

Thanks for all the campgrounds!!! My DH is against going out that way, growing up that is how my family always went (well getting off/on 95 in SC on rt 26 and up). He figures the gas from the mountains will be counteract some of the toll costs by staying on 95 corridor.

Gotcha, you gotta do what is most comfortable for you! Timing is key, too. Could be a breeze going through NYC and DC at certain times of the day, or it could be a headache. We've had both when towing our pop-up, but I'm too lazy to think about the time of day we're traveling, so we just avoid the two areas altogether now :)

Yeah it will depend on our timing what we push for, our last trip north with just the car we had a horrible trip from DC north especially NYC, so maybe I can talk him out of it.

Rocky Mount/ Enfield has a nice koa itnis just south of richmond.

Bdev just a few things to consider. A friend used to live in Savannah Ga. and needed to make trips to Orlando area for his father and by car he claims it took him on average 8 hrs and I would agree with that assessment. Not too sure how comfortable you are traveling each day or how often and amount of time you stop while in the road so that should be taken into account. We, DW and I find that we need to stop every 2 hours or so and each of them can be up to 30 min or longer depending on the dogs and line for fuel when appropriate and are we stopping to eat. Add that we prefer not to travel after sunset (we have had problems both times we arrived at CG in the dark finding our site and connecting to water and/or electric at site) Hence we try to keep our travel day to about 8 hrs. and stop by 4pm each afternoon (we go in Dec-Jan ) and travel approx 350 miles. Your comfort level and needs should be your guide posts.
We have yet to stay there but Camp Lake Jasper in Hardeville SC (exit 33 on I 95 ) gets very high marks on Good Sam and they only had my name and number last year when we had to cancel our trip when we had an emergency develop our first night of trip They where calling me just to ensure we were ok the day after we should have checked in .
Kristen mentioned Pedro's which is part of the SOUTH OF THE BORDER complex located in Dillon SC right on SC/NC border price is good and access to from 95 easy. Carolina Crossroads gets a BIG FAT THUMBS Up from us as well We stayed over night there and now have our go to spot for 1st night stop on trip down and likely last stop on return trip. Further north, just north of Richmond Va we really liked KINGS DOMINION's Camp Wilderness only now they are closed in Jan for our return trip.
To Bypass DC and Bmore consider taking I495 over to 50/301 then 301 north to 895 in Delaware back to 95 in NewArk De area toll for Bay Bridge is @ $6 for 3 axle vehicles and bridge on 301 in De is @ $4

I gotta second taking 84/81. Such a peaceful ride. And when you're talking a 2 day trip what's another hour?

I came home 95 one trip, and sat in traffic around DC on a Sunday....for hours. Told myself would never do that again. We have used the 81/77/26/95 route with good luck. We did do 95/64/81 coming back north on a trip and it was ok also. Have traveled 81/84 a lot as I used to work in CT and lived in PA. 81 is a little crazy around WB/Scranton and then around Harrisburg, but nothing like Philly or DC.

For us Philly was our connection to the Northeast extension, via the blue route. So at the time it was thru around Philly.

Now we are just off 81, so we just pick it up and head south.

We have been making the trip from NH to the west coast of FL for a number of years now (MH with tow) and have experimented with a number of different routes. None of them include 95 north of Virginia; based on experience, just not worth the gamble and stress.
Our current favorite is 95 - 16 - 66 - 81 - 78 - 287 - 84 (recommended on this board by a poster some time ago), very easy, no steep grades or heavy traffic areas. It only adds an extra hour or two, and maybe not even that if you factor in traffic slowdowns.
We stop at St. Mary's Jacksonvile (one of the friendliest KOA's around - with free pancake breakfast), then Enfield/Rocky Mount KOA (very basic no frills), and our last stop is Cabelas , exit 29 off 78 in PA. Cabelas has free designated RV spots and is a favorite for overnights among RVers who use this route. The extra bonus is the adjacent Dunkin and other choices for a meal, plus there is a dump station ($).
It really depends on your time constraints, comfort level with possible slow-downs and driving in heavy traffic, vehicle/equipment, etc.

I'm looking at your route an it is really similar to our favorite, except you go through the Allentown way rather than Scranton. Maybe we'll give that a shot next time. I do have a question, though - where is 16? or do you mean 17 off of 66 in VA?

Yes, sorry. From 95 we take route 17 to 66. I don't think we go as far as Allentown to get on 81 north, but I'll check with DH.
