Old Disney Park photos

i saw a recent pic of it and it must have been relocated because where it is now is not the same as back then. un less they moved that building

i just dont remember walking around the contemporary or even why i would have on my honeymoon. the only time we went to the contemporary was the chef mickey thing. maybe it was on the way to the buses and that is where we got the pic. tooooo long ago dont remember!!!

Speaking of the Disney Inn, do you have any photos of that to post? If not here, there's a Vintage Resort Pics thread. I stayed there as a kid when it was the Golf Resort, and again with my kids when it was Shades of Green. But never saw it in between. I heard it was somehow themed to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but how much theming was there, really?

I know these aren't as old as some on the thread but they are of stuff that is no longer there. These are from my Honeymoon in 1998.

Hunchback show at what was then MGM:

Does anyone remember this from Animal Kingdom? There was a big tent like structure that had Dinosaurs in it.

I loved the HB show! And, I remember going through the tent too. It was a preview for Dinoland wasn't it?

I remember when the queue for dinosaur (or whatever it was called when it first opened) was outside.

And Yes Chef Mickey was definetly at the Contemporary in '89 That much I am sure of. It was a big golf course resort and it Hosted the Golf Classic for the pros the very week we stay'd there There was most likely alot of pros walking around the resort at the time, but back then I had no idea of who was who in the golf world back then. There is a water hole pic when I was golfing that we saw a gator popping his head and eyes above the water... Not the greatest quality photo but it was starting to get darker at the time.
I loved the Mickey Pool, but no slide which was rare for a Deluxe Resort.

Thanks!!! I love finding old photos of that resort. It's gone through lots of changes over the years. I saw your post over on the Vintage Resorts Pics thread, too. Are you going to post the rest there, too?

Chef Mickey's didn't move to the Contemporary until 1995. I know we took our daughter to CM at DTD and she wasn't born until 1990. Check out this history of character dining.

This is a quote from your link. Maybe during the transition time between 1989 and 1990 Chef Mickeys was AT the contemporary Temporarily. ha ryhmes.

Quote
By 1989, Birnbaum's Guide to Walt Disney World mentions that Cinderella was appearing at dinner. This was also the time that the Village Restaurant would be closed; when it reopened in 1990, it would be known as Chef Mickeys Village Restaurant providing the template for character dining as we know it.
From your link

I dont know. What I do know is I was at the contemporary, I dont know what other reason I would have been there And the village restaurant was closed 89-90 and re-opened in 1990 as Chef Mickeys. Maybe somebody else has some info. This is a confusing one. Just not sure what other reason I would have been to the Contemporary. Ive got the photo package somewhere with the Mickey Dish and spoon from 1989, I will have to find it maybe I have a receipt with it.

Can somebody else help us . Was Chef Mickey operating in 1989 at the Contemporary? The Village was closed, from what it says. I am gonna do more research.

Maybe I am wrong all together?

Getting OLD!!!

I don't know about 1989 but it was definitely at DTD in July 1990:

Joe!

Fascinating to see your shots from April 73. I was there in Jan 73, and the River of America was an empty trench with tracks. But that burning log cabin was there and I have it!

I see a couple of sailors out front in the first shot- did you do boot in Orlando? That's how I got there...

No, I was in the AF stationed at Homestead AFB at the time of those pictures. The sailors just happened to be there when I took that one. I was at Homestead from Jan 72 through Dec 74 and made a number of day trips up to WDW. The 73 pictures were from a spur of the moment trip that my fiance (later wife) and I did on a Friday evening after work. We tried the Poly first (obviously did not have a reservation) but they were full so we went over to the Contemporary and got the last room. I know it was the last room because right after they handed me the room key a guy with a reservation came up to the desk and was told sorry but they only held reservations until 6pm (was around 8pm) and there were no room available. Needless to say he was not happy and demanded to talk to the manager but I didn't stick around to hear that conversation. ;)

I probably went 8-10 times while I was at Homestead but that was the only trip that I took a camera. We did have a reservation for the Poly in the spring of 75 (when we made the reservation 9 months was the earliest availability they had) but had to cancel it due to getting transferred to Germany. It took another 30 years before we finally got to stay at the Poly in 2005.

Excellent story!

Isn't it amazing how so few people back then even carried a camera and damn it, you have 12 shots, don't waste them! LOL!

:)

Joe - Your pictures are wonderful! I especially like the "burning cabin" shots. Was that on Tom Sawyer Island? And is that the cabin that is there today?

Wow! Great shots! Everything looks so stark and bare!! The trees have really grown up!! Walt would be pleased :)

I agree! The Tom Sawyer Island, castle, and Swiss Family Treehouse pictures are also quite bare.

Yes, it is on Tom Sawyer Island, still there but it doesn't burn anymore.
