Love is “Universal”: Our Awesome Anniversary Adventures in Orlando (May 2015 TR)

Thanks for the construction heads up, nancipants....

Great trip report Gina-Gina-Bo-Bina! We're so excited for Universal after reading your fun descriptions!

I empathize with your girls.....Gina has never been the easiest name to find on personalized items either. When I was a little girl, finding Gina was darn near impossible (and actually, I'm officially a "Georgina" ... which you will never find printed on a toothbrush, I guarantee it!). Imagine my surprise when I found a lovely necklace with a heart shaped pendant personalized with "Gina" and a tiny dolphin at one of the shops in Port of Entry at IOA. Needless to say, that was one of my souvenirs of this trip. I couldn't pass it up!

i still think you are gina gina bo jinga.

well, the parental units could have nicknamed you george, instead of gina.......

Universal's annual passes are a really good value, especially compared to WDW's IMO. We easily make back the cost of the passes just on the room discounts alone And then renewal rates are even sweeter and hard to pass up.

That's great that you had a good time even though some of the rides weren't your thing. I do think the Universal parks need a few more mild rides. Just one or two more in each park that are more on the level of Cat in the Hat or ET would be super.

So how many days total did you visit the parks? It seems like you guys never ran out of stuff to do. I'm super impressed with your list of characters!

We were there two part days (the day we arrived and the day we departed, for a few hours on each) and four "full" days (two devoted to each park.....I use "full" in quotes, because we were there at opening daily but didn't have to/need to/want to stay until park close). We took two days off completely, one to go to Daytona Beach and the other to do the Eye, the skeleton museum, and to relax :) .

The photo book is lovely Gina...........I really liked that, it is cute and a lovely memento too.

Thank you schumi! :goodvibes

We tried twice to get him on. My son even asked if he could buckle I'm in, but they said no. They dd modify the seat for abd girth, but I bet they didn't think about men with wide shoulders!! I didn't go on the first time we tried to get him on, but the second time I dd go on ( With my sweet husbands urging). But I didn't enjoy it because I felt bad for my DH. :guilty:

I know how you feel!! ::yes::

Great report, Gina! You're making me want to get back to Universal soon. (Unfortunately we've now reached the time of year when I become a hermit from the theme parks--once Star Wars Weekends is over, of course, lol.)

Just a word of warning for your October trip: I-4 has begun a massive construction project (Google I-4 Ultimate Project) and the area around the Kirkman and Universal exits have already gotten nasty. Come October, you might want to use an alternate route to the parks (via Universal Boulevard). If you do a PTR for that trip I'll definitely pop on over and keep you updated. :)

Well, boo :sad2: ..... that's going to be a bit of a pain. Thank you for the heads-up, though! We will be sure to use the Universal Blvd. route instead :thumbsup2 ..

Excellent trip report, I love your writing style! I can't wait to read your fall trip report. :thumbsup2

Thank you!! :goodvibes

My DD is named Gina, so I definitely sympathize.

Believe it or not, Sarah was actually hard to find when I was young (my mom was apparently a few years ahead of the curve).

lol, I can tell you with absolute honesty that as a child, I used to wish I was a Tammy, a Jennifer, or a Susan :rotfl: . Now, I love having "my" name.....especially knowing (and being old enough to appreciate) that it was picked to honour my maternal grandfather, who lost his battle with cancer when my mom was pregnant. I never got to meet him, but now I carry a little part of his memory on.

Thanks for the construction heads up, nancipants....

Thanks for reading along, and being part of the report! :goodvibes I always appreciate having other people to share my memories with!!

i still think you are gina gina bo jinga.

well, the parental units could have nicknamed you george, instead of gina.......

My son was mortified, way back in 2008, when he saw what I picked as my handle for the Disboards. He was sure people would think I was "weird".....to which my beloved Steve assured him "don't worry Jaker, give her a while and they'll think that anyway....her screen name won't matter in the slightest"!! Brats, both of 'em  .

My brother is the only one in the entire world who gets away with calling me George. He always has, and he always will. And for some reason, coming from him, it doesn't bother me in the slightest (from anyone else, it drives me bonkers). Must be because I know the big goof means it with love :) .

Wow, lots of days. And people say the Universal parks are a one-day visit...Pfft! :)

Thanks for sharing your book, how cool. I have not gotten one from them but I will consider it. I am terrible at getting them done(I lost 3 codes for free photo items just from not getting them done before it expired.)
Happy planning for your upcoming adventure. October was great weather for us but we loved May in the past as well. Darn kids and school is making my travel harder:crazy2:. As I get closer I am panicking about being in Universal in Julys crowds but its just one day. October was moderate crowd at US/IoA and heavier than expected at Wdw.

Thanks Gina for a great trip report and for sharing the link to your picture book. I love making the picture books up from our vacations as they make some of the best 'keepers of memories'.

When we go in August it will be our 25th Wedding Anniversary but this isn't the main reason for our trip. We lived in England and moved to Canada 9 years ago (I was born in Canada but grew up in England) and this year we get to meet some friends and their family to share the experience of Florida with them. We both have kids 15 & 12 and have rented a villa for the majority of our stay but the highlight for all of us is the 1 night at RPR and our 2 days at US & IOA with express passes and early entry. We have been many times in the past but the last time was 2012, and they have never been.

I can't wait to try some of the places that you mentioned like Hash House and Bubbaloos, and to return to some of our favourites that you also enjoyed like Carrabbas.

I always do a spreadsheet on costs before we go and then try and tie it back to what we actually spent when we get back to see how close I was. This is for no other reason that I enjoy 'guessing' at what it's going to cost. I am of the firm belief that you can't put a cost on memories!

Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to reading the next one:thanks:

Great end to this vacation. Always great pictures and food porn.

Well, starting to line up things to do in October. Trying to get the rental car down more in price, but I am ok with the price I have, as everything seems more expensive this year. I was so glad I booked the airfare when I did. Both our trips have seen higher prices, and my December trip is now over 600 dollars more than what we paid last month, for the 4 of us.

Pre trip report for October coming soon? popcorn:::scratchin

We figure we'll try out an assortment of months (now that we can pretty much travel "whenever") and see what we end up enjoying the most. Christmas will be crazy (hence no parks on that trip) but worth the zany Orlando traffic and crowds to spend the holidays in the sun with the whole family. It is definitely so much harder with school aged kiddos!

Absolutely agree! ::yes::

I hope you will consider doing a trip report after your August vacation. I would love to hear about all the awesome adventures you have planned!

Awesome report...thanks for sharing everything with us!

Thanks for being part of it! :goodvibes I hope you'll join me for the next one, too.

Our October rental is also still ridiculously high. I am hoping we'll see a downward movement in pricing sometime around mid-August. Right now, we have an SUV reserved because its cheaper than a car  .

I have been watching Jetblue as well, and like you, prices are WAY up from what we booked at several months ago. The early bird definitely got the worm where airfare was concerned ::yes:: . When you take the fare price increase and times it by 4 people, it sure adds up!!

Loved your trip report and your photo book, Gina! :thumbsup2 I'll definitely check out your other trip reports for info on Sea World and Aquatica. Thanks for sharing your trip with us! :goodvibes

Another great trip report Gina!! Thank you so much for sharing your adventures. I always get ideas of new things to try from your reports!

I so loved this report and am sad it is over. I do have a question- I know you were able to get a deal on Black Friday for I think it was Seaworld or Acquatica tickets. Is this something they do every year? Anywhere else I might get a good Orlando deal on Black Friday? I want to write it down and remember to check! Also, how did you get the really good pre-sale deal on the photopass thing for Universal? Is that a sale that happens often as well? Thank you so much for all your helpful tips and advice- I really think the Sheraton Vistana and places should give you some freebies for all the good press you give them here! Is anyone in power reading this? :p

The Seaworld parks run a "Blue Friday" sale every year on or around Black Friday. The 2013 sale featured the following:

Buy a 2 Park SeaWorld Orlando + Busch Gardens Tampa single day ticket for $99 (visit by May 31, 2014)

Save $30 off on a SeaWorld Orlando 1 year Annual Pass

Save $20 off on a Aquatica Orlando 1 year Annual Pass

Buy One, Get One Free Christmas Show Seating (use by December 24, 2013)

20% off on Santas Fireside Feast (Select Dates 11/30, 12/1, 12/7, 12/8, 12/15)

20% off SeaWorld All-Day-Dining

20% off Banana Beach Buffet

25% off online merchandise at Shamu Shop

Last year, they offered BOGO annual passes, BOGO tours, and....if I remember correctly....BOGO quick queue and Santa's Fireside Feast.

Also around that same time, the Super Grover Passes (unlimited admission for a calendar year to 11 different parks across the USA, including SW and AQ in Orlando and BG in Tampa) are generally offered at 20% off. You can check out the pass inclusions and benefits here:

http://sesameplace.com/en/langhorne/book-online/tickets/season-passes/

As far as the Photoconnect awesome pre-sale price is concerned, I saw a post on their facebook page way back in the fall indicating that their $49.95 offer would be ending, so I emailed them to confirm I could buy in October and not activate until May (they responded right back saying that was fine) and then went ahead with the purchase. They emailed me a voucher and I redeemed it for a Star Card and lanyard when we arrived. It turned out to be a genius move on my part considering its now tripled in price :crazy2: . Another benefit of buying last autumn...our exchange rate was WAY better....so I paid less exchange, too.

I am happy to be the Vistana's volunteer Canadian Ambassador, no payment required :teeth: . Maybe some good Karma will catch up with me someday and make my dream of living in central Florida a reality :goodvibes . A girl can certainly hope!

Thanks for the great report Gina, I appreciate all the SW info since we're planning a combo SW, Busch Gardens, DC and Universal trip next year and I need all the cost savings I can get.

Oh Gina I am woefully behind on your trip report!!! I think the fact that I am not actively planning a trip and being in the middle of grad/prom/university prep season with my oldest has kept me away. I promise to sit down with a cup of tea and read it all at once very soon!!!

Great trip report Gina! Really enjoy following you!

Just a heads up to anyone with an MSG allergy, I cannot eat at Sweet Tomatoes because they use MSG. The one time I tried it made me very sick.

I was in your same position last year at this time ::yes:: . Its so busy but super fun! Best of luck to your DD as she prepares for an exciting new chapter in her life!

Thanks SCDizFan! Interesting about the MSG....that's something I didn't know :scratchin .

FINALY had a chance to catch up- very envious of your empty parks time of year trip. We still have a couple more days before we fly home. Did a few hours at Uni Monday (had the buy 2 days get one free tickets) and glad we went that day- got our star card activated and got on a few headliners with low waits. Tuesday we checked into RPR early, headed to lounge for breakfast then hit early entry- so glad we did- Hogsmeade is SMALL for the amount of people crammed in the area. But we did FJ with very little wait (just long enough to really appreciate the castle tour! OMG the books come to life!!) and dragon challenge several times along with Flight of Hippogriph. And we might have broken the record on butter beers consumed...we loved the frozen type. And definitely worth staying on property in peak season for express passes unlimited. We would only have been able to a third of what we accomplished without them. The kids all got interactive wands with their souvenir money- the spells are really a lot of fun and they had a blast.

The Minion packing had me laughing- especially at the thought of the TSA opening that bag and the boys exploding out of the suitcase! Still chuckling actually!

Glad to hear you have had such a fun trip so far! I hope the weather has been good for you, also :sunny:.

I agree wholeheartedly.....Express Pass at peak times is a life saver ::yes::. And I am glad someone else's family also has a Buttterbeer addiction :rotfl: ... as I was writing my report, I was a little embarrassed at how many cups we ended up drinking over the course of our week :o .

Have you given any thought to doing a trip report when you get home? :flower3: Enjoy the rest of your vacation, and safe travels when you depart!
