While searching for something special for mom’s Christmas trip this year, I came across the Intimate Dining Experience at the Grand Floridian. There were a few reviews online but not too many recent ones so I thought I’d post my recent experience in case anyone else was out there searching. Also for me to relive this amazing experience. I emailed and called Pat Anderson in private dining at Grand Floridian. I was extremely anxious as I only had a week to plan this event. Pat emailed me the current menu outlining the 4 courses. I was saddened to learn that they have changed the process now. In the past, you pre-ordered for you and your guests but according to Pat, several guests didn’t like to do this so they changed the process. The menu now appears to be the Citricos menu; not the full menu and a few small changes. You now order at the table during the event. To me this made it feel like a restaurant and not a special dining experience. Besides, I wanted mom to be anticipating each and every course I had chosen for her, but I can see how the new way would be beneficial to some. I told Pat about my concerns and she assured me that they can set it up anyway I liked. I was thrilled!

A few days prior to my event, she sent me the final menu from the chef. I also asked to have a special surprise for mom as this was her birthday present. Mom loves caviar so I asked for the chef to do some type of Amuse Bouche and for caviar from Victoria & Albert’s as an add on. Also mom is allergic to shellfish and has some allergic reactions to other foods but they were great in working with me to design the menu and make some swap outs. I received the invoice from Pat for the evening and now I had to surprise mom. If you have read any of my other trip reports, you know I love to have daily surprises for mom each day of our trip so for this one, she just knew we had a dinner planned somewhere nice and she was to bring a dress. By the way, you set the dress code for your event; it is up to you. I wanted a formal affair.

I designed an invitation box and inside I placed jewelry that I had bought mom for the evening that matched her dress.

I presented mom with the invitation the morning of our event. She was so excited and said “hey, it doesn’t say where we are eating?” That’s right mom, more secrets. Here we are later in the day ready to head out.

We were staying at Wilderness Lodge so we took a quick taxi ride over to the Grand Floridian. I told mom I wanted to take photos of the lobby but really we were early and our butler was not meeting us at the grand piano until 8:00.

Mom started to get anxious and finally I told her that we had to wait and that they would come get us when our table was ready. I told her that the restaurant was really strict with reservation times. She was extremely suspicious but finally our butler walked up to us and asked us if we were Candice & Magnolia.

Mom was so confused. She said “Yes we are!” He said, “well I am Chris and I will be your butler for the evening.” Mom’s face was priceless. Didn’t want to jam a camera in her face though so no pic of it. Chris told mom we were going to be eating on the 3rd floor and he would take us up by elevator. He led us to the club level elevator and then to the large balcony on the 3rd floor. He served us our choice of bread (wheat or olive) and then took our drink orders. They gave us each free wine or cocktail since I had used private dining before. While waiting, mom and I reminisced about our stay in the suites on the 5th floor last Christmas. Oh how we wished we were up there again.

Chris handed us both our personalized menus with our names on them. Mom’s excitement was growing.

It was a little chilly and mom was about to ask him to move us inside but then he offered to open the doors to the lobby. This was the greatest suggestion. It provided us with heat from inside and we also had the added bonus of the orchestra playing.

Finally Chris arrived with our wine and the surprise I asked the chef for. The chef prepared a crostini with I think a goat cheese and cucumber salad to go along with our caviar. Mom was so excited when Chris sat down the plate of caviar and toppings. She grabbed the pearl spoon and wouldn’t put it down. I had to remind her that we were sharing this expensive ½ an ounce. Haha!!

Chris arrived with our first course and removed the empty plate of caviar. LOL. For mom I ordered the butternut squash soup with duck confit and maple syrup. Mom said the soup was good but that my version was better. She did love the duck and maple syrup though. For myself, I had the Florida shrimp with tomatoes and feta. It was delicious. [/URL

I believe the water pageant started about this point and we could hear the music well.

Chris arrived with our second course. We both had salads. Mom’s had walnuts, golden raisins, apples, cranberries and cinnamon crisps. I had the tomato and avocado salad. It was all really good but we made sure not to finish as we still had 2 more courses.

Illuminations then went off to our right.

We were starting to get full but determined to press on. Chris arrived with our main course. For mom I ordered the red wine braised short ribs over leek and parsnip puree. This stuff melted in your mouth.

For my main course, I ordered the filet with onion jam over mashed potatoes. Very tender but sadly not the best I have had.

Mom cleaned her plate. Chris arrived once again to bring dessert and refill water glasses. He kept the table nice and tidy too. Desserts arrived. Mom got the lemon scented cheesecake with white chocolate and I got the warm chocolate banana torte from Narcoossee’s. They were both really good but we were unable to finish them. They wrote Happy Birthday on mom’s plate.

Chris went off to get us some coffee and my favorite in all of Disney World, Wishes Fireworks began. We could hear the music from Narcoossee’s. I felt a little bad for the club level guests who kept coming past with their glasses of wine and wanting to watch the fireworks from the balcony but it was ours for the evening so no go.

Lastly, mom and I were both presented with a long stem single red rose and of course, THE BILL! They already add in gratuity but as Chris was fantastic, I added in a little more.

Overall, the experience was amazing. I can’t say that this was the best food I had ever had as I have had far superior food elsewhere but added in with the experience, made it that much more special and in my opinion worth every dime.

I just love your trip reports. I should come over to the DIS more often! Would you do this experience again??

Absolutely! I think you can have up to 4 guests so maybe a small dinner party for 3 lucky friends.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. You WIN as all time best daughter, will you adopt me or something lol! Seriously, what a wonderful surprise for your Mom...just fantastic. And her name - Magnolia, oh so beautiful! And your custom designed box with the jewelry...I'm swooning over here!

Thanks for posting this. I haven't been able to find anything really recent on this.

My pleasure. I'd be happy to send you the menu that was given to me for Dec 2015. Of course just like I did, they will allow you to swap out things or just preset the menu like I did. I also added the caviar. Just contact Pat Anderson at GF with your date you have in mind and she will send you the current menu; probably close to Citricos like this one was. Let me know if you have other questions.
