I Feel As Though I've Never Been To Disney Before
May 23 - 30, 2015
Port Orleans French Quarter

Greetings to one and all, and welcome to my most recent Trip Report!

This trip was one that we weren't intending on taking this year. We seriously were considering something else, but we had plans changed once we began talking with my aunt and uncle. They have been to WDW a few times over the years and even stayed at the Poly way back when only the Magic Kingdom existed! In our conversations, though, they mentioned wanting to take a trip with us and basically "tag along"...and of course, I am more than happy to oblige being a tour guide at "The Happiest Place on Earth"!! (If only I could find a way to make it a career!)

I had assisted them 2 years ago when they took their two sons and daughter-in-laws on a trip. I helped them plan and gave them my tips for touring WDW. They had a great trip that year but wanted to just be a "fly on the wall" with us! So we began planning and choosing a date!

Due to schedules, we decided to go Memorial Day week. They were surprised by the Saturday to Saturday plan, but once I explained they were all for it! "Free Days" have become essential for us! And by the end of the trip...they were fans! That was step one!

Step two: where to stay? Two years ago, they had stayed at Caribbean Beach and enjoyed the resort. I wanted them to experience something new and for anyone that has read my past TRs knows Keith adores Port Orleans (most specifically for the boat to DTD) so we decided to go with French Quarter. (Actually, the choice between Riverside and FQ was made by Disney since we were using Military discounts and only FQ had the room only discount available!)

Also for anyone that doesn't know, is curious, or just wants a piece of information to store in your brain: The Military Room Only Discount allows you to add the Dining Plan options! We went with the DDP giving us 1 snack, 1 Quick Service and 1 Table Service per day/per person! Also of note: we got to experience the aspect of the Dining Plan changes with having a leftover Quick Service that allowed us to exchange it for 3 snacks. We did this on our final morning and I was surprised they even mentioned doing this! Once on the road, I learned on Facebook that the new Dining Plan "rules" were being leaked out!

Anyway, that sums up the when and where portion! Let's move on to the who!!

I'll begin with my family...well, part of my family!! Only 3 of the 5 went. Actually the oldest has never been! Our middle son, Chris-who many may remember from the past, has a "Grown-Up" life now with a real job so he was unable to go with us. That leaves Keith, Madison (DD19) and myself!!

Madison is all about the Princesses but she's a fan of Minnie Mouse too. She's my sidekick and the one I can usually count on to be at Rope Drop with me and ride any ride either of us choose to do! She just finished her Freshman year of college which went way to quickly for me but not fast enough for her! :smooth:

Then their is Keith and myself (Tisa):

I am the Disney fanatic/addict in our family. I am usually planning a new trip before the current trip has even begun! I love travel in general, though. And travel can be anything from a day road trip to a full fledged vacation! I have been blessed with a DH that is as into travel as myself so we go frequently. As a matter of fact, friends and family ask where/what we are doing next because for us to not have plans to explore is unusual! As you can tell from our pictures, the beach can be on our list as much as New Orleans, Gatlinburg, TN/Asheville, NC or Mississippi back roads!

I fell in love with Disney much sooner than DH but he's slowly coming around! In fact the day we arrived, he suggested booking a return trip for Food and Wine! He is all about the food at Disney and that is perfectly fine by me!! So of course, I am looking at my possibilities for an October trip now!!

While Keith is about the relaxation, pool, and food/beverages while at WDW, I love, well, pretty much everything!! My most favorite ride is Tower of Terror but that just tops the list of the many attractions I love! I also love the shows-which Keith hates due to the singing, resort hopping, fireworks, parades, and just being on WDW property in general! My favorite park is Epcot even though many times I believe this is more due to what Epcot used to be and not what it is today-at least Future World!

Then the other part of our travel party are my aunt and uncle. My uncle is one of my mom's older brothers (she has five...poor thing!). For most of my growing up years, they lived around the block from my parents (still do) and their sons are close to my age. They are as much like 2nd parents as they are aunt/uncle. Growing up we went on vacations together and always had a blast. My uncle is known to be a joker and prefers NOT having his picture made (this fact proves very important later!)!

My title comes from my aunt because about mid-trip, she told me "I feel like I've never really been to Disney until now!" This made me feel good that a trip I'd worked hard to be sure they had a great time was actually happening! I couldn't think of a title but the conversation where this statement was made kept popping up in my head...so I went with it!

Needless to say, this trip was almost all positive and when I think of the negatives, I always think of the positives that out weigh them: **it was HOT-but not humid so shade helped!, **it was crowded and we didn't get to do things we planned-we still got to do lots of things and focus on those!, and so on. I suppose the trip was just fun so any negatives don't matter in the end since we enjoyed what we did accomplish! Besides, that's the whole point, correct?

I'm going to wrap up the intro with this thought: How many see Disney in everyday life? Here are just a few things that bring Disney into my life even when I am not in Orlando or WDW. In many ways, they just strike a Disney cord with me and aren't really "Disney" at all...or I find them interesting!

Down in south Louisiana, along the banks of the Mississippi River lies River Road. River Road has plantations that mostly farmed sugar cane. So how does this make me think of Disney? Well, I did say that Port Orleans is our resort of choice! And Riverside does have the plantations!!

(These are of Oak Alley Plantation)

Also on River Road is a Creole Plantation called Laura Plantation. Laura is of significance due to stories that were collected and recorded here in the slave's quarters (which you actually can tour). (And note if you are ever that way, the differences between Anglo and Creole plantations are significant and each unique. If you can only tour two...choose one of each!)

And these stories include the tales of Bre'r Rabbit...you know the Disney movie "Song of the South" and a little attraction called Splash Mountain? So there's that Disney tie-in!!

And back to the beach...in Pensacola, FL there is a Naval Museum that has this cool display that made me squeal when I saw it!!

And on the actual beach, I ran across this little hidden Mickey which someone may have purposely arranged but I still spotted what started it all...a Mouse!

There are many things in "the real world" that evoke the Disney magic deep within me, I just thought I'd share a few!

I will leave us at this point, but I will return with our arrival day!! Hopefully, you will join in and if so, again I say :welcome:

I love Oak Alley but I have never been to the Laura. That's on my list to do the next time I visit my sister. And I was married in Pensacola. I can't wait to see how your trip goes :)

Greetings to one and all, and welcome to my most recent Trip Report!

I have no idea why, but that made me giggle. Your most recent? I guess that's appropriate. :)

I hope Chris is doing well in his new "grown up life". Nice to see Madison along on this one, but I will miss the texts you shared on the last one.

How many see Disney in everyday life?

 I do, I do!!

OK. All ready!! popcorn::

Welcome!! Oak Alley is so beautiful I can spend all day there! Laura is most definitely worth the trip! The tour guides are very interactive and enthusiastic! It was a great trip so I can't wait to tell about it! Hopefully an update tomorrow!!

It's hard knowing how to move from one completed directly into a new TR!! hahahaha

I hope Chris is doing well in his new "grown up life". Nice to see Madison along on this one, but I will miss the texts you shared on the last one.

He is doing pretty well in his "grown-up life"! He has a good head on his shoulders and making some wise decisions...I hope he keeps it up because I can't say I was like that in my early 20s!! :rolleyes1

 I do, I do!!

Yep, I knew you'd day that!! I've seen some evidence in your TRs!
OK. All ready!! popcorn::

Hopefully an update tomorrow! I wanted to do one tonight but got side tracked by enjoying the outdoors! Sorry...:headache:

Heading Home!!
Technically, my vacation began on May 20th. Well, it was really work, but a conference on the beach can be counted as vacation beginning, right!? I returned home on May 22nd which meant I had to have EVERYTHING ready for our trip when I left for my conference! The plan was to hit the road on Friday evening and stop along the way. My aunt and uncle hit the road bright and early Friday morning and stopped in Ocala.

Well, as plans usually do not go as planned, Keith and I were pretty tired when Friday evening rolled around so we decided to wait until morning. We went ahead and loaded everything in the car so we'd be ready to hit the road!

Saturday morning the alarm clock went off ridiculously early...as in 2:15 am early!! But this is DISNEY we are going to and time means NOTHING!!!!!

We hit the road by 3 am and drive for 4 hours before we saw the sun rise in Pensacola. Then we drove the miles and miles and miles of I-10 until FINALLY we were heading south on I-75 and the Turnpike was getting so much closer!!!

About the time we make the turn onto the Turnpike, my aunt lets me know they have arrived and LOVE the resort! They decided to walk around a bit until we got there. At some point they go to the lobby and a CM asks if she can help them. They explain they are waiting for us to check-in. She takes care of everything for them and my aunt texts me that they are in room 2105!!

Of course we had already done online check-in, and about one week before the trip, I got an e-mail that we would get a text once our room was ready. When we completed the online check-in, I had put in we'd arrive at 10 am. Due to not leaving Friday as planned, we rolled into Orlando at 2 pm and saw these gates at 2:20 pm:

I was driving so Madison was in charge of getting these pictures. This is what that goofy girl had on my phone when I got it back!

And soon we were pulling up to the resort!! We were HOME!!!!

We still had not received any texts letting us know the room was ready, so we headed to the lobby. We were helped right away and within minutes, we had our packet and were heading to the Parking Lot for Building #2! We found a place to park and as we were unloading our luggage, my aunt and uncle were heading over to help! We were officially very excited and ready to get this vacation going!!!!

We got to our room and we had both of our special requests honored: 1st floor and close to transportation. We were in room #2106 so we were right next door to my aunt and uncle. The walk to the food court and pool were under 5 minutes and the walk to the bus was just a little bit further. This is one reason I love POFQ!

We drop our luggage and I took a few pictures of the room!

And the views from our room:

Madison wanted to swim so we changed and headed out. We had not stopped for food since breakfast at around 8 am so we went to the food court first. Chili dog and chicken nuggets were purchased and shared plus we got our mugs. No food porn here, but I did do much better this trip than the last! We ate and then went towards the pool. There were no chairs available....NONE! So we decided to ditch the swimming idea and make our way to Downtown Disney. We had dinner reservations plus I wanted to get our military vouchers activated at Guest Services!

Back to room and cleaned up, we make our way out and about to the boat dock:

Our rooms #2105 and #2106:

We didn't wait long for a boat and soon we were sailing down the Sassagoula to DTD!! I was excited to see how much had changed since last September. The walled walkways have moved around but I love the new bridge and I can't wait for The Hanger and Edison to open! I'm looking forward to Disney Springs!

From the boat we could see the newest dining location:

Our first order of business was to get these:

loaded to these:

Usually we do this as we go to our first park and it doesn't take long. Since our initial plan was EMH at Animal Kingdom the next morning, we weren't sure everyone would be together and the sponsor or sponsor's spouse is required to get everyone linked. We arrived at Guest Services and within 15 minutes we were on our way! Super easy!!

By the way...Madison and her BFF "fancied" our bands up a little bit:

Now that business was taken care of, we went off to have a little fun before supper. In this case, fun included shopping! We headed to Marketplace Co-Op first where I spotted a ton of cute things!!

I love the unique items they sell in these stores (and the ones not unique to just the Co-Op!

I could go broke here!!

Continued in the following post...

We walked over to Tren-D and I found some Mouse Ears:

And then we went to the glass store - Arribas. There was a guy doing glass blowing. He was making octopuses.

This store has some incredible creations... and expensive!!!

At this point we decided to make our way to the restaurant. I was super excited for dinner tonight! We were going to The Boathouse!!

We checked in and waited until our names were called. While waiting we were able to see a few groups going out on the Amphicar tours:

The Amphicars look so cool and we watched four groups launch in the thirty minutes we were standing there...I just don't know if I'm ready to fork over the cash!

The inside of the Boathouse is beautiful. I love its classic, casual style. It's upscale but not stuffy.

We were seated almost immediately at our reservation time (7pm). We got there about 6:30pm and could have been seated right away but it was outside...which would have been awesome except for the sun that was beating down at the time. The wait wasn't bad so we chose to sit indoors. Once seated, the waitress brought the bread which was very warm and delicious!!

Next to us was a cool booth built into the back of a boat:

My uncle and Keith found this motor and price intriguing:

Soon, our food was brought out! The food was incredible!!! My aunt got the salmon and my uncle got a steak and both loved their choices(no pictures of their food).

Madison went simple since she had eaten too many chicken nuggets and fries earlier. She went with a bowl of gumbo.

She loved her choice but good gumbo is one of her favorite foods.

Keith and I both ordered the market fresh catch of the day, although mine is also on the menu. Keith got the YellowTail fish...

It was great. Light flavor and not too fishy. But it had lots of bones so that will probably keep him from ordering it again.

I ordered the Scallops on Cheese Grits.

OMG!! So good! It had a bit of a kick to it but I love spicy so it was just perfect!!

We really enjoyed The Boathouse and will probably go back.

As we were eating, there was a girl at a stage next to our table. She was very good. She took a break and when she returned, she had a friend with her to sing a song. As the two girls sang "Why Do You Have To Be So Mean" I noticed little kids--mostly girls between the ages of 5-9--with their mouths dropped open and stars in their eyes. Due to this, I figured the friend must be someone special so I took a couple of pictures:

I mentioned to Madison that I suspected she was somebody. At some point Madison realized her as a Disney star, Peyton List...I think she was on a show called "Jesse". Madison has outgrown those shows so I don't keep up with it as much. She's a good singer though, very pretty and seemed so sweet to the kids.

After we ate, we decided to call it a night. 2:30 am was a long time ago and driving for 12 hours on top of waking early...well it can wear you out! Plus we have parks to hit the next day!! So we exit the restaurant:

We make it back to the boat dock and have to wait in a very long line. Thankfully they called in more boats and we were loaded and heading home within 15 minutes!

After a peaceful trip up the Sassagoula, we crashed and had sweet dreams of what the next day would bring!!!

Oh my I totally envy the ability to drive to Disney. I would just love to have that freedom to start the departure on my time and not the airline.

I was driving so Madison was in charge of getting these pictures. This is what that goofy girl had on my phone when I got it back!

Admit it. You loved it.

Our rooms #2105 and #2106:

Wow, when you say next door, you really were next door.

By the way...Madison and her BFF "fancied" our bands up a little bit:

Love it!!! I much prefer this to just buying sleeves and whatnot. Much more personal and unique.

I mentioned to Madison that I suspected she was somebody. At some point Madison realized her as a Disney star, Peyton List

Interesting. I have never seen the show before or anything, yet looking at the pictures she looked familiar. I guess "Disney Star" just stands out somehow. I have heard the name before.

Well....you knew I'd be here sooner or later! Subbed in and ready to read. I didn't realize you had another trip so quickly and then F&W this year too? Woohoo!! We aren't going for F&W this year but we will next year. I think we have a little coordinatin' to do for fall, 2016!

I can totally relate to seeing Disney in every day life. My big thing is an acronymn. I made a purchase for my employer the other day and part of the purchase deal was if you buy one item, you get another free. They used the acronym BOGO (Buy One Get One) on the invoice. It took a while for me to realize what it meant. I kept wondering what the last O stood for after Be Our Guest! Sighhhhhh

Great start to your TR. I'm glad the drive was uneventful. We both know the myriad of things that can happen on that drive especially on that long stretch between Loxley, AL and Lake City, FL! I'm looking forward to more on your aunt & uncle's experience. It is so great to go with someone that has never been or has not been in a long time and share their excitement with them!

One question, we are trying to decide between the Boathouse and Ragland Road for one night during our December trip. We have never been to RR and as you mentioned, the Boathouse is new. WWTD? (What Would Tinks Do? - I told you about me and those acronymns!)

Oh my I totally envy the ability to drive to Disney. I would just love to have that freedom to start the departure on my time and not the airline.

I do like the freedom of driving but sometimes the traffic hold ups can be quiet frustrating!!

Admit it. You loved it.

Yep, I do! :teeth:

Wow, when you say next door, you really were next door.

It was pretty close!

Love it!!! I much prefer this to just buying sleeves and whatnot. Much more personal and unique.

Thanks! I am usually not interested in decorating with the stickers and what not but this idea intrigued me!

Interesting. I have never seen the show before or anything, yet looking at the pictures she looked familiar. I guess "Disney Star" just stands out somehow. I have heard the name before.

I had never heard of her before but we did catch her on "Jesse" (?) Friday night so I can now say I've seen her on television too.

Well....you knew I'd be here sooner or later! Subbed in and ready to read. I didn't realize you had another trip so quickly and then F&W this year too? Woohoo!! We aren't going for F&W this year but we will next year. I think we have a little coordinatin' to do for fall, 2016!

I think Keith is completely hooked on F&W! I had it no where on my radar and he brought it up. Of course I am game!! We plan either a trip out west or up the Eastern seaboard next summer but I don't rule WDW out at all anymore!!

Sighhhhhh

I do this also!! DHS is one I work with a lot at the school, so I ALWAYS think Disney's Hollywood Studios. And I will even after they change it to whatever!!

That is the LONGEST part of the drive! Ugh!! I love it when that stretch is under the darkness of night! I do love showing new things to people and especially when they appreciate it! I will hopefully get an update done soon!

One question, we are trying to decide between the Boathouse and Ragland Road for one night during our December trip. We have never been to RR and as you mentioned, the Boathouse is new. WWTD? (What Would Tinks Do? - I told you about me and those acronymns!)

I love that...WWTD!! :dogdance: For us, no question...The Boathouse. But then our last three tries at RR were bad. The first time we went in 2011 it was great but not so much the last few times. The Boathouse was a great experience!!!

Oh and WELCOME!!!!! :welcome: I'm so glad to have someone new to comment! I have the views but very few to "talk" to!! And I love the talking part!! LOL:rotfl2:

The First Park Toss-Up
Our first park of the trip was initially going to be Animal Kingdom. It is one of the parks Keith isn't crazy about and it was the designated AM EMH park. I had figured Madison and I could hit the EMH and knock out the attractions (ie Expedition Everest) that no one else wanted to do. We could them meet up with the rest of the group once they got there.

The more I thought about this, though, I began to feel like this just didn't "feel right". When I discussed this with everyone, we decided that we would hit up my favorite park!!

My aunt and uncle decided to delay their arrival, so Keith, Madison and I made our way and arrived just before Rope Drop. Madison was just a little happy at being back!! (It had been 1 1/2 years for her so I can understand the excitement!!)

Our FPPs for the delay were for later in the day, so we knew arriving at Epcot, we needed to choose one of the two attractions that the masses head to: Soarin' or Test Track. We elected to go to Soarin' and even with arriving at Rope Drop, the wait time was still 20 minutes-and it took pretty much the full 20 minutes.

It is rare that I go through the stand-by line because 1. it's hot and 2. the concrete is brutal when you stand on it for long. I snapped a couple of pictures in the queue:

There are these interactive games (although I am not yet convinced that they really work with body movements) but we didn't have enough time in front of each to test the accuracy of "interactive". I did manage to see a Hidden Mickey or two!

Soon we were at the gate where you are directed to Concourse 1 or 2. We went right...not sure if it was 1 or 2 though!

After we finished our journey over California, I got a text from my aunt that they were on the bus and headed our way. We decided to make our way to the front. Along the way were these flowers...I love all of the flowers at Disney so lots of pictures throughout the trip!

As we head to the front, Keith decides he needs a snack and gets his favorite: the Mickey Bar. And then we forge ahead:

We sit by the water feature in front of Spaceship Earth and wait...only about a 5-10 minute wait so not bad! And of course, my boredom in sitting still resulted in pictures!

Once they arrived, we made our way back to The Land. Living with the Land had already been discussed pre-trip and it was agreed that everyone loves this attraction. So due to this conclusion, it seemed the obvious choice. Plus when we had left 15 or so minutes prior, it was a walk-on. Well...not so when we got back! The wait time said 40 minutes!! Since there really wasn't much else to do at the time, we just jumped in line. The wait actually wound up being only about 20 minutes so it wasn't too terrible. While in line I found more Hidden Mickey's:

Madison and Keith sat up front and the way these two play around, I was sure one would go over board...thankfully, I was wrong!!

I really love this ride and in the past taken tons and tons of pictures, but this time just a few...

And the Mickey head in the tank has a Minnie added! This was new to me and too cute!

Everyone was hungry by this time, so we made our way out since Madison did not want Sunshine Seasons. Along the way, a monorail came sailing by...

We made our way to World Showcase...England? No one was a big fan of fish and chips at the moment. France? I was game but Keith turned his nose up as quiches and sandwiches.

Morocco?? Another no go by the majority. Japan...a round of nays again. Then we found ourselves in America and everyone was on agreement. Well all but me...not that I didn't agree, but come on, I'm in World Showcase and the choice is America!? It wasn't real busy so it didn't take long to order.

Keith and Madison both chose a hamburger and fries.

It's your typical Disney burger and fries. I love the Disney fries so much that I may have stolen a few!!

I ordered the Shrimp Creole. I am so apprehensive about ordering cuisine I know well when at Disney. I don't do the New Orleans food at POFQ because it is always a disappointment but I went with it here...and it was really good!! I was happily surprised! It even had a bit of a kick to it...and I'm all about some spice in my food!!

I also got the apple pie which was pretty decent.

Madison got the Rocky Road Brownie...very good but also very rich!

Continued in the following post...

After we ate, Madison had a goal in mind but we had time to spare. My aunt and uncle needed to go back to the resort and I was getting some severe allergies and knew I wouldn't be far behind! So they headed off after we discussed the rest of the day's plan. After the split, Madison, Keith and I wandered about a bit:

Back to Japan...

And then we make it to our destination of Morocco.

Madison had been wanting to get a Henna since the last trip, but the booth didn't open until 1 pm. We had about 30 minutes to spare so we looked around the shops. I love browsing through Morocco!!

We walked around for about 15 minutes and then decided to go back to the area where they do the Hennas. Thank goodness we did because the line was already building! There were about 8 people ahead of us. We were able to go ahead and look at the book with all of the options. Most of the options cost $15-$25. There are some that cost more but it's easy to find one in the $20 range. Madison made her choice, told the lady and went to pay. Once she'd paid, she jumped in line.

This lady works super fast!! Plus she started before 1 pm so by the time Madison was done, it was 1!!

Madison's chosen design was "Melody" and cost $20. She had blue sparkles added for additional "pizzazz"!

By this time, my allergies had kicked into overdrive and I just wanted to get back to the room! So we headed out. Keith suggested the boat to Hollywood Studios and then catch the bus to POFQ. We realize this is a longer trip back but we love the different transportation options and the boats are some of our favorites!!

There was a slight wait for the boat and thankfully there was a fan because the day was getting HOT! Thankfully the humidity wasn't bad. Heat I can handle but I despise humidity!!

Soon we were on the boat and cruising along!!

Before long...or 20 minutes later...we arrive at DHS! There was a new topiary out front that has replaced Mickey (at least Mickey was there the last time I was):

Madison chose to pose along with Anna. And then I got just the infamous duo:

We didn't have to wait too long for a bus and we were back to the resort by 2 pm or so. We decided to rest just a bit and then head out for our afternoon/evening plans--which we were so excited for!!

Ahhh! I didn't realize you had started. I am such a bad DISer.

Anyway, I love the updates. I am glad Madison got to go along this time! Great way to start your trip with DTD and Epcot! I have got to find that marketplace store!! I LOVE those plates!

I didn't realize they had games in the Soarin' queue. We always fastpass it.

Your food looks pretty good, but I probably would have been a little disappointed if my family chose lunch at the America pavilion. There are too many good options in Epcot!

Joining in! I see Disney in everyday life as well. I will see something and automatically think "that reminds of of....in WDW"! Just the other day I found a Hidden Mickey at the grocery store near my home!

It makes me so
happy but also depresses me because I still have to wait for my trip to come. Can't wait to hear more!
