TOURS UPDATE

Quote:
Ride in an air-conditioned spacious vehicle, being driven by an experienced driver, to Costa Rica’s most popular national park, Manuel Antonio, where our knowledgeable nature guide will give us a narrative of the geologic features, national history, local botany, as well as exotic tropical birds, monkeys and sloths we will see.

Than enjoy the Manuel Antonio beach, equally good for snorkeling, swimming and just laying on the beach before a lunch stop at a quality restaurant where we can choose among traditional Costa Rican favorites or more familiar foods, such as burgers and fries or sandwiches.

On the way back to the ship we will have an opportunity, if time permits, to stop at a number of photo opportunities and souvenir shopping spots. These might include Villa Lupas and Santa Lucia, an eco-friendly resort within a tranquil rain-forest preserve for nature lovers.

The cost of this full-day tour, with park entry fee and lunch included is $85 per person plus tip. Children under 8 years old receive 15% off, under age 3 are free. PROGRAMS DCLTravler is creating a DIS program of events so you'll always know where to find playmates
I'm checking in to let you know that I have the general template created for the "program." I wanted to run some thoughts by all of you and also get some ideas to create the most useful document for everyone!
Here are my thoughts:
-Include the list of "who is going," "where we are from" and "where we are staying"
-Include a 20-24 hr daily schedule documenting everything "we" have planned as well as space for everyone to write in what they want to do for the day.
-Include a tutor schedule that only has each of us (who volunteer to tutor a topic) tutoring for one hour during the entire trip.

My Questions:
1. What do you think so far?
2. What else do you think we need?
3. There are a lot of runners, should we schedule a meeting time each day on deck 4 for those who want to run together?
4. I have all of the activities from the website, but are there others you want to do?
5. I remember reading something about a "tag" game with a Mickey Mouse Magnet "tagged" on peoples' doors--should we do that? If so, how does it work?

Feel free to answer any or all of ?'s 1-5...any help is most appreciated!

Staying Connected on Board UPDATEDDVCinderella has done some work on how to stay connected while on the cruise. If anyone has anything to add to this please pm me and I will add it to this post.

1) DCL emergency ship-to-shore - I will be leaving this number with family at home. I believe it costs $6.95/minute.

2) Sprint - I contacted their Int'l Help Desk. They enabled our phones for Int'l use. There was no charge for this, and no change to our account or current package (we only have voice/text...no web). Here are the charges I was quoted should we use the phones during the trip:

On the cruise ship:
$2.49/min - Voice
$0.50 - Send text
$0.05 - Receive text
No data (internet, pictures, etc)

Aruba:
$1.99/min - Voice
$0.50 - Send text
$0.05 - Receive text
No data (internet, pictures, etc)

Costa Rica:
No service.

Mexico (Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas):
$1.69/min - Voice
$0.50 - Send text
$0.15 - Receive text
No data (internet, pictures, etc)

3) BlackBerry - I have a BlackBerry for work, but it is only for e-mail & web (the web connection is very slow). It does not have voice capabilities. Can I assume this will work for e-mail contact? Or should I check with my employer?

4) iPad - In a previous post, I saw reference to iPads. I am completely naive about iPads & iPhones. But I would seriously consider getting an iPad if it's the best way to stay in touch on this cruise. Other than buying the device, what other costs would this entail? Also, where would you safely store this? I assume the safe is not big enough.

AT&T tips for I-phone users

If you want to place calls but not use data:
Turn Data Roaming "OFF". By default, the setting for international data roaming will be in the "OFF" position. Turning "OFF" data roaming blocks email, browsing, visual voicemail and downloads, but it will not block text or picture/video messages.

To turn data roaming "ON/OFF", tap on
Settings>General>Network>Data Roaming

When abroad, international roaming rates apply when you send text or picture/video messages.

To access audible voicemail when data roaming is "OFF", tap on
Phone>Voicemail (International roaming voice rates apply.)

Utilize Wi-Fi instead of 3G/GPRS/EDGE - Wi-Fi is available in many international airports, hotels and restaurants to browse the Web or check email.
If you want to use data but not receive email automatically:
Turn Fetch New Data "OFF" - Check email and sync contacts and calendars manually instead of having the data pushed to your iPhone automatically. This way you can control the flow of data coming to your iPhone.

To turn off the Auto-Check functionality tap on
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Fetch New Data, Change Push to "OFF" and select option Fetch Manually

Utilize Wi-Fi instead of 3G/GPRS/EDGE to download and manually check email: Wi-Fi is available in many international airports, hotels and restaurants.
If you want to use data and track your usage while abroad:
Consider Purchasing an International Data Package: Purchasing an international data package can significantly reduce the cost of using data abroad. AT&T now offers four discount international data packages. The 20 MB package is $24.99 per month, the 50 MB package is $59.99 per month, the 100 MB package is $119.99 per month, and the 200 MB package is $199.99 per month. See att.com/worldpackages for details and international roaming rates. To add an international data package, call 1-800-331-0500 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting**************1-800-331-0500******end_of_the_skype_highlighting.

Reset the usage tracker to zero - When you arrive overseas, access the usage tracker in the general settings menu and select reset statistics. This will enable you to track your estimated data usage while abroad.

To reset Usage Tracker to Zero tap on
Settings>General>Usage>Reset Statistics

Scavenger Adventure on the High Seas!

* TracyVP - Coordinator
This challenging "adventure" is part Scavenger Hunt, part brain teaser and all fun! You'll go on "quests" where you get to explore the whole ship, find out stuff about some crew members that you might not otherwise know, and compete with other DISers of all ages for bragging rights!

Date: Saturday, January 15 (a sea day)
I (Tracy) will deliver the game packets to your staterooms the morning of the event.
The answer sheets will be due back to stateroom 6500 at 10pm that night, and the "Scavenger"Adventure team will have the results for us the next day. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbon awarded.

There will be two "interactive" quests; one will require the players to meet the "Scavenger"Adventure crew members at a time/place to be designated on the game packet, the other will require them to use their WAVE phones to send a text message to the staff members. All of the details will be in the game materials.

Deadline to PM TracyVP to let her know you want to participate is Sunday, January 2. After that we will have no way to print more game packets.

For more information as to what this event is and how this popular event is run in the parks, check out our Cruise Website event page here
Our "Adventure on the High Seas" will be more casual than that but it gives you a general idea of what "quests" can entail and how much fun it is!

Val is also organizing an excursion of a different sort ROOM TOUR
Quote:
What to do: Cruisers volunteer to let others visit their cabin and see what the different categories are like. One person organizes the event to make sure we don’t have duplicate categories. So, on a sea day, at an established time, (final time set after other event times are published) starting on the lowest deck, we visit the different category of cabins. It is great fun to parade down the halls meeting each other and getting a real look at those rooms we all take only a quick peak into as we pass an open door. Additionally, it allows us to share cabin living ideas such as use of an over-the-door shoe storage hanger to put all the “stuff” that ends up set everywhere; or printing a few 4x6x pictures each night at Shutters and decorating one wall as the cruise progresses.

HOW IT WORKS - DetailsWhat was done on the tour when we opened our room was the following: The tour started on the lowest deck. The people showing their room met at the first room a few minutes before everyone. So the people in rooms on the tour on the highest floor could see the rooms on the lower two decks before they had to get to their room. Those on the lower decks went after everyone had cleared their deck and told the people on the next deck they were the last and they could close their rooms. Most people had two or more adults in their room so they took turns going back and looking at the rooms they had missed.

Without a doubt it is very generous of the people who open their rooms, As someone who missed a seeing a few of the rooms I can say meeting everyone made up for it.

I would never leave my room open unattended. Hope this doesn't discourage you from showing your room

UPDATE TO THE CHAMPAGNE GIRLS UPDATE – Calling all Champagne Girls and Wanna-bes (all are welcome)
I have received a response to my FAX to the DCL Function Request Department regarding our Champagne Girls Celebration. She replied that our reputation precedes us and that she has scheduled Champagne Girls events before. She further stated she would be scheduling her January requests sometime in November and would advise us as to what DCL can provide at that time. However, in order to assist us she will need an estimate of how many of us would be in attendance. When I inquired as to an estimated cost, she indicated it would be somewhere between $15 and $20 each. Non-alcoholic beverages could also be provided.

Please send me a pm, even if you have notified me already, if you would like to be included in the count. Please note I will be giving her a count of the estimated number for planning purposes, not your individual information. I would like to hear from you by next Friday, 11-5, at the latest. Thank you.

Val is also organizing a book exchange. The bag will be hung outside stateroom 6572

Contact Valbob89 on this one too
Are you interested in a private DCL mixology tasting? Learn all about how those colorful drinks of the day are made and just who gets to name them. For some additional fun, we’ll have a Hawaiian Shirt Contest, seems to go with all those little paper umbrellas and tropical fruit
PM me if you would like to be included in the count and request for the event to be conducted by DCL

Sorry it didn't work out. I scrap, but I digi-scrap :surfweb: I hope to bring my scrap stuff with my laptop and spend some sea days scrapping.

:goodvibes It might work. :thumbsup2 Could you bring it and we can see if it will work? The seal is 1.75 inches diameter, ideally 1.5" seal would be best, but perhaps we can use your embossing tool. If it needs more, perhaps afterward we could 'draw' a border around it using some cardboard disc that I have.

Someone suggested 'drawing' around a pin shaped as a mickey head. That could be another option too.

Any other suggestions? Obviously we want to keep it simple as we have 130 certificates to emboss.

--Kay

If I can find that embossing tool while I'm at the world before the cruise, I'll buy one too - then there'll be two of us who can do it - the task will go faster.

Hmmm, now I'm thinking of shipping a box. Is there a list somewhere of what can't be shipped to port? I'd love to send our sunscreen. Kids hate the lotion kind so we use spray on.

If I hadn't switched to digital I would have participated. But I have another suggestion. What about a Circle Journal after the cruise. I participated in one after a DVC Member cruise about 4 years ago and what I got back is just amazing. And both traditional and digi scrappers can participate if they want. Just a thought...

Yup, looks like we have a SM that changed cabins. Thanks for the reminder to check.

The list is in the faqs at the top of the cruise board - one thing for sure - NO FOOD.

I LOVE the idea of a circle journal - that way the digi scrappers can participate too!

Sounds good to me. I'll have my laptop and probably most of my digi stash with me on the ship. I'm hoping to get at least a little of the trip scrapped while still out to sea. I purposely have not signed up to participate in many of the planned activities on this cruise so that I have plenty of "me" time - something I didn't plan for last cruise.

If you'd like to see the pages I scrapped from the last PC cruise, you can look here. I still have lots of pics to go through and scrap from that trip, but I needed to work on a few other projects for a while. So much for completing that trip's album before leaving for this one.

Happy Day, All!

Three weeks??? :scared1: I'm so not ready for this trip.

Oh, I can't wait. Less than 24 hours till I see the new Tron movie.

I can't wait! I'm going to try to get tickets for tomorrow night. If it wasn't for that stupid thing called work in the morning I'd go to the midnight show too.

Goofprincess- Hope all goes well on Sat and the weather is great.

It is supposed to warm up in FL today. I amtired of wearing heavy clothes. Just hope Jan 6 is nice so we can have a great Sail Away Day.

An additional embosser - that will be cool! Thank you.

Holly - if you are around - are you able to check and see if the embosser is available at all?

What is a circle journal?

We will wait and see Tron on board, as well as Tangled.

Early start for school this morning. Boy am I glad the holidays start next week. Getting up is tough these days! (The fact that it is cold and dark doesn't help!!) Looking forward to some warm sunshine soon :cool1:.

Welcome to thread number 5! I just got caught up on the last 15 or so pages on the last thread! Hate it when the job gets in the way.

Jenn - congrats on the grades and what gorgeous shoes. I would fall and break all bones in my body so those are not for me at this stage of my life.

Passport comments - DCL told me when I booked that I needed to renew mine before we went, that is why I did mine before the rates went up earlier this year. Here's to hoping it arrives in plenty of time.

The packing is in motion although it is all just strung all over the house :scared1::scared1:. Drew gets home from school tomorrow so I need to get his bed cleared off - it has been my stash spot. My goal is to get our dinner and cruise specific stuff in the largest of our bags and get that done tonight. DH's 'stuff' is all out and ready to be folded and put in. Mine stuff, on the other had is all mixed up with day wear so I have work to do on that front. Going to be a busy night.

I can't beleive we are 3 weeks from sailing and that I am FIVE days from departure. I always feel like we wait and wait and wait and then it gets this close and in a blink of an eye, it will be over.

I am finally able to access this thread. First it would not even let me read. Then it let me read, but not post, but it seems that everything has been sorted out now.

I think we'll have to cancel this activity for lack of participation then unless someone has another idea :confused3

It is probably too late for this now, but on the WBTA we did a scrapbooking swap where everybody was bringing some kind of embellishment for everybody else on the list. This could be anything, home-made or store bought. I did not participate in this (and are now bitterly regretting this fact as I wish I had), but from what I heard, it was a huge success.

Here I come! Ugh I need to go see the dentist as my tooth just chipped off where I had a filling and soooo close to the cruise! Yikes! I knew I shouldn't have posted in that dentist thread and this is proof! :lmao:

Anywhoo...wish me well. Just the thought has the cold sweats coming and going, but I need to get this taken care of before we set sail.

I hope that your dental appointment goes well. I, and a number of other people on our thread, had the same problem on the WBTA.

Speading of the dentist, I also have to get there. I either broke off a piece of filling or a piece of tooth. Ever notice how your tongue likes to go to that empty spot? Why is that? :confused3

Bad news from the opthamologist too. Apparently, I scratched the cornea on my right eye a few weeks back. My vision is very blurry in that eye. I was told it would probably heal in a couple/few weeks. Well, I went back today for a recheck and, while it is getting better, it is still not healed. Looks like I can't wear my contacts on the cruise. This means I am going to have to go out and buy some prescription sunglasses before we go and time is running short. It's either that or wear those flip-up shades on my eyeglasses!! :cool1:

I just can't believe how close we are to Christmas and our cruise. We are going to WDW starting 12/31, so I don't have much time in between Christmas and our vacation. So far, no snow in the forecast for the weekend, so I should be able to finish up my Christmas shopping. Thankfully, I have done quite a bit of it onine.

My DD18 just finished finals for her first semester of college today. She will be coming home in a couple days for the next 6 weeks. I am hoping she will be a big help with getting ready for Christmas and the trip.

I need a new large suitcase, so I brought a couple home to decide. In the store, the 28 inch suitcase didn't look that big, but at home it looks gigantic! The other one is 25 inches. I am afraid if I keep the really big one, I will overpack it and it will end up overweight and the airlines will gouge me with extra fees. But the smaller one doesn't seem like it will hold enough. I never have learned how to go on vacation without overpacking, but I really don't have that luxury. Sounds like I may need warm clothes for WDW and DL and then dinner clothes and casual clothes for the cruise. So much to pack, so little room!!! :rolleyes1

I hope that everything heals and you are on top form for the cruise.

As to the suitcase, can you get Sub 0 G baggage in the USA. I bought the biggest suitcase (30") and the carry on for the WBTA as my luggage allowance was quite restrictive and my old suitcase was simply too heavy. I love my Sub 0 G baggage and to my immense surprise with the suitcase filled to the brim, I was still under my allowance.

I am going to sign off for a few hours. I finally want to try out Epic Mickey, but normally I can't get anywhere near the Wii. DH is still at work so that is my chance.

Finally starting to get a move on with getting ready for the cruise. Got my brother's tux ordered from Cruiseline Formalwear, determined he needs to bring his suitcases packed for the cruise when he comes down for Christmas and not for the cruise (he's flying Southwest for Christmas and AirTran for the cruise - AT charges a fortune for bags.) Thankfully he has just about everything he needs at my mom's for Christmas.
Trying to get the rental jeep for Aruba set up. Need a car seat for Jack, so we're held up on that. Starting to work on the FE and FE gifts. Piling up everything to go to the dry cleaners (Jeff's tux really needs it!) The list goes on and on...
And we have less than 3 weeks!!!!

Anyone want to do games like yahtzee, phase 10? I have them and will bring them with us if anyone wants to play. Finished my FE and am mailing the last packages for Christmas out today on the way too work! I am also going to get to meet the person who made my FE in Epcot before the cruise. So excited.
