D23 Expo September 9-11, 2022 Superthread **Updates in Posts 2 & 3**

No. We didn't either. I think it just sold out as I was reserving, because it let me go to the last button and then said NOPE.
Iā€™m frankly getting tired of all these mini-events that are instantly ā€œsold outā€. Weā€™re all super fans, otherwise we wouldnā€™t be going.

At the very least, use random selection like they have for other things (panel reservations) to book extra things like this so itā€™s not ā€œwho happens to be checking their email that exact minuteā€ competitions constantly.
My thoughts exactly.
Just FYI - as of 10:15am - they've opened more space for it - I was just able to register.

Walt Disneyā€™s Grumman Gulfstream I Airplane Makes its West Coast Return for D23 Expo 2022

The historic aircraft will be on display at the Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, from September 9 through 11 in an all-new exhibit from D23, the Walt Disney Archives, and D23 Expo Platinum Sponsor Amazon

September 01, 2022 01:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Walt Disneyā€™s Grumman Gulfstream I plane is making a cross-country journey to Anaheim, California, where it will be on display for fans attending the sold-out D23 Expo 2022 presented by Visa from September 9 through 11. D23 and the Walt Disney Archives, along with D23 Expo Platinum sponsor Amazon, have restored the planeā€™s exterior for guests to see in a specially curated exhibit in the Arena of the Anaheim Convention Center called Mickey Mouse One: Waltā€™s Plane presented by Amazon. The exhibit will highlight the history of the planeā€”also known as ā€œThe Mouseā€ā€”and showcase its significance in The Walt Disney Companyā€™s history.

The newly repainted plane with updated wing edges and windows will be on view along with never-before-exhibited items from the aircraftā€™s interior, including a customized instrument panel originally located near Waltā€™s favorite onboard seat that allowed him to monitor flight conditions; a telephone handset that gave Walt a direct line of communication to the pilot in the cockpit; a flight bag featuring an image of Mickey Mouse sitting on the tail of the iconic plane; and more. Waltā€™s plane will return to the West Coast for the first time since October 8, 1992, when the plane landed on World Drive in Orlando, Florida, at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disneyā€™s Hollywood Studios), where it resided as a part of the Studio Backlot Tour until 2014. The recent exterior repaint and finishing work, along with the cross-country move of the aircraft, was made possible thanks to collaboration and support from Walt Disney Imagineering.

In 1963, Walt acquired the iconic Gulfstream that would come to be known as ā€œThe Mouse.ā€ The interior of the plane, initially designed with creative input from Walt and his wife, Lillian, seated up to 15 passengers and included a galley kitchen, two restrooms, two couches, a desk, and nods to the mouse who started it all, including matchbooks and stationery adorned with a silhouette of Mickey Mouse. Mickeyā€™s initials were eventually included in the tail number of the plane, too, as N234MM, in 1967. Throughout its 28 years of service to The Walt Disney Company, the plane flew 20,000 hours and transported an estimated 83,000 passengers before it was grounded.

D23 Expo will kick off Disney100, a celebration of the 100-year history of The Walt Disney Company, and in this all-new exhibit, guests will be invited to ā€œtake to the skiesā€ and learn about the role this iconic plane has played throughout the companyā€™s history:
  • In 1963, Walt, members of his family, and company executives took off on a demonstration Gulfstream aircraft to explore potential locations, including Central Florida, for a proposed development often referred to as ā€œProject X.ā€ After Walt received his own Gulfstream in early 1964, he made several trips to Florida that ultimately laid the foundation to bring the magic of Walt Disney World to life.
  • Waltā€™s plane flew a total of 277,282 miles back and forth between Burbank and New York to oversee preparations before and during the 1964ā€“1965 New York Worldā€™s Fair, an event that brought iconic attractions such as ā€œitā€™s a small worldā€ to an East Coast audience and, later, to Disneyland.
  • The plane also took Disneyland to new heights as Walt found inspiration for the look of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction as he flew over the El Moro fortress in San Juan, Puerto Rico, while conducting research for the now fan favorite.
  • ā€œThe Mouseā€ has a star-studded past, having been used for promotional tours for Disneyland as well as for classic movies such as The Jungle Book (1967), as well as making appearances in The Walt Disney Studios films The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) and Now You See Him, Now You Donā€™t (1972), both of which starred Disney Legend Kurt Russell. The aircraft has also transported notable guests including Disney Legends Julie Andrews and Annette Funicello, as well as former U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
  • Painted blue and white in 1985, Waltā€™s plane embarked on goodwill tours and character visits to childrenā€™s hospitals, adding to the companyā€™s history of giving back to the community.

I'm curious what the differences are with the stars (entry points) on the map - some are solid gold and some are gold/red. No context was provided.

Oh, too funny - they already altered that map. Ha!
;)
I was wondering the sameā€¦. Iā€™m guessing they had lots askingā€¦.. still wondering if it meant anything šŸ¤”

Also - looks like shopping will have standby queues in addition to virtual queues. So I'll be heading over earlier than I had planned šŸ™ƒ

We'll see what happens Day 1 - I'd like to try for an MOG standby (not pins, likely), see if I can make it into Legends in time (if not, that's ok).

Ohhhhā€¦ā€¦ shopping opportunities related to Waltā€™s Plane šŸ˜Š

Argh. Had s busy day and wasn't checking this thread. Missed out on the Hulu party again. Oh well, we weren't quite sure if we wanted to go. We'll just be getting into Anaheim that evening.

I must acknowledge a fellow Uncle Scrooge fan. I still have some of my original Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse comics from the 50s and 60s. It's what got me started as a Disney fanatic as a kid.

I debatedā€¦. But after a full day of Expo, Iā€™m thinking walking from the Hilton to Splitsville and back that evening and then getting ready for Saturdayā€™s Expo is too much for meā€¦. If I was staying say at the DL Hotel, I might consider going to the party for 30 minutes and then heading to bed šŸ˜‚

Oh, whoops. We're arriving Thursday, not Friday, so nevermind my other post. And we are starting at the DLH... But likewise, glad to just relax Friday evening after a day at the expo and be ready for Saturday.

When I was very young, I was all about Donald. I even have pictures of being Donald for Halloween with a costume my mother made herself (she was a seamstress back then). But later I grew to love anything "Duck," including Scrooge, and of course, the head honcho Mickey

Few key things that *I* took from this for shopping:

You do NOT have to be at the convention center to join a virtual queue, AND notifications are not going to be sent until 10AMā€¦so if your main goal is the shopping queues I donā€™t foresee having to get there terribly early as notifications wonā€™t be sent out until 10AM, and you donā€™t have to be at the convention center to sign into the queues.

Right - that said, they'll have standby queues for most places as well. So if I can make it into one of the MOG stores from 9 onwards, I'd like to try! And then I can save my VQ attempt for another location that day.
