Opening on May 28, 1994, Disneys Wilderness Lodge was inspired by the Great American Northwest National Park lodges from the turn of the 20th century. It is an architecturally grand Disney Deluxe Resort honoring American craftsmanship and artistry, and celebrates the majesty of the unspoiled wilderness.
Designed by architect Peter H. Dominick, Jr., who also designed Disneys Animal Kingdom Lodge and the Grand Californian, the theme of being in harmony with nature winds through the lodge, inside and out. Authentic décor and genuine artifacts pay homage to ancient Native American cultures and the pioneering spirit of early American explorers.
A 10-foot totem near the Wilderness Lodge Mercantile features some famous animals. Disney character Humphrey Bear stands at the base and supports Donald Duck. Lodge legend has it that rubbing Humphrey Bear's black nose brings good luck.
Step inside the 7-story lobby, the centerpiece of Disney's Wilderness Lodge, and be awed by 2 towering totems. Each reaching 55-feet tall, the hand-carved pole, one topped with a raven, the other an eagle. Draw your eye up the 4 levels of corridors that surround the lobby and provide access to sitting nooks, terraces and nearly 730 guest rooms. The various animals, from whales to raccoons to eagles carved into these totems, depict Native American myths and legends.
While looking up towards the ceiling in the lobby of Disney's Wilderness Lodge, notice 4 massive teepee-shaped chandeliers suspended from solid Lodgepole Pine beams. Authentic rawhide, hand painted with geometric designs, stretches over the lights' structural framework. Each teepee chandelier, with its bronze and steel ring of silhouetted buffaloes and riders on horseback, weighs 600 pounds.
SILVER CREEK is currently undergoing a rehab and has been drained. The lobby bridge is closed. The creek should be completed and re-filled the first week of July 2014. Photos taken 6/8 by hstrickland are located HERE.
WILDERNESS LODGE/SILVER CREEK POOL. UPDATE 6/18: The WL pool closure was publicly confirmed HERE. The pool will be closed 9/3 - 11/27. Guests may use the CR, FW and VWL pools. Transportation will be provided.
EpcotBillprovided us on 6/18 with the following TA information:
In addition, the Silver Creek Springs Pool at Disneys Wilderness Lodge will be closed for refurbishment Sept. 3-Nov. 27, 2014. During this time, the leisure pool at The Villas at Disneys Wilderness Lodge will remain open. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit either the Main Pool at Disneys Contemporary Resort or the Meadow Swimmin Pool at Disneys Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. Complimentary transportation will be provided to both of these neighboring resorts.
If the pool was your Clients primary reason for choosing Disneys Wilderness Lodge during this timeframe, please consider working with your Client to find an alternative Walt Disney World Resort hotel that will suit their needs.
SFunaro was told on 6/18 that they are putting in a fence, a sidewalk around the pool and kid's splash area.
As more details emerge, I will continue to update this section.
6/6/14 - Wilderness Lodge POOL WORK PERMITS, found online by TheLodgeLady, show "Main pool and deck area" work to be performed. The permits were filed at the end of 2013. On 6/10, hstrickland was told that the kiddie pool will be replaced with a splash pad water feature area. Other pool area work will be done, but specifics are unknown at this time. Some have reported that that guests with reservations that overlap with the pool rehab will be contacted by mail, presumably at least 60 days prior to the rehab.
VWL: All villas have received a hard goods rehab that begun January 2014 and was completed at the end of March 2014.

If you have booked a club level room at Wilderness Lodge, you should receive an E-mail from the IPO (ITINERARY PLANNING OFFICE) welcoming you and inquiring about any reservations they can make for you. When they initiate contact varies. Sometimes it's soon after booking or it can be just prior to the 180 or 90-day mark. Sometimes they will attach a planning form. After you have emailed back the planning form, you then might receive another email like this:
Howdy!
Thank you for choosing Walt Disney World as your vacation destination.
We have you arriving to Disney's Wilderness Lodge Resort soon and staying in our exclusive concierge club.
Attached is a copy of your itinerary thus far. Please review the itinerary and notify us of any adjustments or changes that need to be made. Any events not booked through our office will not appear on your party's itinerary.
Upon your arrival at our resort, please proceed to the Valet Desk or Curbside Cast Member. You will then be escorted directly to the Club Concierge for check-in.
Please feel free to contact us if you require any further assistance
with planning.
Happy Trails,
Walt Disney World Itinerary Planning Office
Phone: (407) 934-5348
Fax: (407) 824-3162
While the WL IPO cast members are not physically located at Wilderness Lodge, they are actually based at Disney's Polynesian, they will be your point of contact until arrival. If you havent heard from the IPO before the 180-day mark (and this can happen), you should use the email address below to initiate contact. You can contact the IPO at any time after you have booked. Make sure to include your reservation number in all correspondence with the IPO:
When you arrive, let the bellman or curbside greeter know you are a club level guest. If you are driving, most likely the guard will have announced your arrival. They will either instruct you to go into the lobby and check-in at the Bell Services counter, which would only occur if they are very busy or if it is before 7 AM or after 10 PM when Club Level is closed or a Club Level Curbside Greeter will greet you outside. The CM will check your name against a list, might ask you for ID, and will then call upstairs and let them know you have arrived. If someone needs to park a car, have the bellman store your luggage (if you'd like), go park the car and the curbside CM will wait to take you upstairs until your party is all together.
Once on the 7th floor, you will check-in at the concierge desk immediately to your right as you exit the elevator (between 7 AM and 10 PM)
If your room is ready, you will then be escorted to your room. If it is not ready, you will be called or texted when it is ready. It's the goal to have all guests in their room as quickly as possible. You will be given your KTTW card and/or Magic Band if you have not pre-ordered, with park tickets and dining plan loaded (if applicable) even if your room is not ready. You have full lounge access from the time you check-in until 10 PM (when the lounge closes) of your check-out day.

Walt Disney loved steam trains and the Wilderness Lodge is home to some art, photographs, replicas, and actual artifacts from Walt's hobby and Disney World's earliest years.
In the Carolwood Pacific Room (formerly the Iron Spike Room), which is in a corner of the VWL lobby, you can play chess and checkers by the fireplace or learn more about Walt Disney's favorite hobby. Two of the most intriguing pieces of history in this room are the two train cars, donated by Walt's daughter. The cars actually come from Walt's own backyard railroad, the Carolwood Pacific Railroad. Walt used to pull these cars behind his own American 4-4-0 engine named "Lilly Belle" after his wife. You can see the Carolwood Pacific logo on the cars.
