Cancelling Trip Due to Zika

Well I applaud you for canceling. Disney can wait. Even though the chance of contracting the virus is small, it's still a possibility. I couldn't imagine proceeding on the trip & then heaven forbid, contracting the virus....all because I wanted a trip to WDW.

It makes me think of people who don't buy their infants their own seats on flights, and strap them into carseats because the chance of turbulence is SMALL. Um yeah, then when it happens, and my child is injured, I'd be wracked with guilt because I was trying to save a few dollars.

Best of luck to you!

I'm 5 months pregnant and plan on going in a month. I went in for a check up last week. My doctor said to follow the CDC's guidelines and be prepared to cancel a day in advance if their warnings change, and to just stay tuned. She said as of today, there is no reason to avoid Orlando. I really trust my doctor (I see a doctor out of Johns Hopkins who says their office gets daily updates from the CDC about Zika) but I honestly didn't feel uneasy about going until I wandered onto the Disboards and read a bunch of stuff about people being nervous, canceling trips, or calling pregnant women "foolish" for going as planned. Don't know if that helps, but good luck to you! Had my doctor said "Don't go" I would have canceled without thinking twice.

I think that you are safe because you are past your 1st trimester. The majority of the research is saying that the fetus is affected when they are exposed within the 1st trimester.

I think the OP made a very wise decision as she is trying to conceive and she would run the risk of either exposing a fetus in the 1st trimester if they were to become infected, or she would have to put off trying to have a baby until they were 100% sure they weren't infected.

I wouldn't take the risk, no matter how small, if I were her, either.

My son was sitting on our balcony at the BCV the other night and got two mosquito bites. it's impossible to eliminate all mosquitoes on Disney property. They have placed bug spray in each room.

Hi,
My husband and I are suppose to travel to Wdw this weekend, staying through Labor Day. We are looking to start a family and doc said "No Way. Cancel."
Is this an overreaction? I live in NYC. Any thoughts on the situation in Orlando would be appreciated.

No, not overreaction, IMO. Disney will still be there - no way would I take a chance with my baby if I were trying to get pregnant.

To be honest, I would not even have asked my Dr. - there is no way I would personally even have considered it - would just vacation in another place this year.

I agree. Way too many places one could vacation to risk Zika if TTC or pregnant. Sorry, do Disney another time.

I think this is a really personal decision and I would not go if I was trying to conceive or in the first few weeks so I completely understand your decision and don't think you should second guess yourself. I read research on some studies and they say it has the biggest impact in the first trimester, after all not everyone who gets Zika while pregnant has a baby with birth defects. I was actually really excited to conceive this spring before it started to spread this summer. I spent most of this summer hiding inside but the outbreak never arose in my area, it seems Zika is much slower to travel than some thought. I know a few other woman who are pregnant and it was a similar thought process.

I am going and will be 5 months going into 6. We are prepared to cancel if an outbreak is actually found anywhere near Orlando in the next 3 weeks but since the two areas are several hours apart, the way I see it is its like canceling a trip to NYC because of something happening DC assuming that people will spread the disease quickly. I think like many decisions woman make about pregnancy each woman needs to decide the risks for themselves and work with their own doctors to find the best solution.

If I were planning on getting pregnant within a year or two of a visit or was pregnant, there is no way I'd be traveling to Florida. There is just too much we don't know about Zika, except it appears to cause even more damage than everyone thought. Read this recent article from the New York Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/24/h...acks-and-destroys-parts-of-babies-brains.html

Very scary.

BTW, your baby can still be affected by Zika even in the last trimester:

Two years seems extreme since the CDC says refraining for 6 months of a male with a confirmed infection but if the woman is the only one with confirmed infection it is 8 weeks.

I am eating my words, I canceled today. I went to my doctor for a check up and when I mentioned vacation she looked me dead in the eyes and immediately wanted to know where I was going as it turns out she is majorly concerned about her patients travelling to FL after the reports that have come out in the last 1-2 weeks. Basically she thinks by the time they find another cluster it will be too late.

I was truthfully still on the fence as a lot of people say its fine but what made me flip was actually calling Disney. The woman was so scripted and kept trying to convince me to just re-book for a few months as soon as I mentioned Zika and I hadn't even mentioned cancelling yet. Working in a call center myself I recognized that they are being coached on this and that gives me a baaddddd feeling as they must have a lot of these cancellations. I have never had to do this so I thought I would try switching to Disneyland. They said it was non-transferable to them and her tone of voice became exceptionally stern and almost rude. I ended up getting a full refund after a bit more back and forth.

JetBlue on the other hand was amazing. They let me re-book with no penalties or fees, I didn't even get charged a price difference between the flights. Since they were willing to be so flexible we decided to go ahead and go to DL instead. I found a DL package that is only $100 more than our WDW package was due to some last minute discounts they have out.

I am still really sad, after I canceled the package I had to cancel all our meal reservations, FP+, and I realized the magic bands may have even shipped already so hopefully I'm not hormonal when the box arrives.

You'll have a wonderful time at Disneyland. I imagine it is actually easier on someone who is pregnant as the weather is much more mild and everything is much much closer.

Thanks for that DizneyLizzy,

So my wife and I just found out a few days ago that we are pregnant with our 2nd coming. (Surprise!!!!!) Right now we don't know how far in advanced we are but it could be anywhere from 4-7 weeks.

We already booked a trip mid-November (of course), but I was on the cusp on "Should I cancel....or Should we go?" At that point we will be about 4.5 months pregnant when/if we go and from reports that I read the virus affects pregnancy on the first trimester. That's if you get it........now let's look at the odds.

I found this in my web searching https://www.casino.org/zika-odds/. This is odds of contracting the virus from Brazil which has the highest concentration. This is Florida so the odds are even greater. I have a better chance of getting struck by a DOG (whatever that means) and dying then my wife contracting the Zika virus.

There is risk which I'm still on the fence about. I am thinking about cancelling my trip. But we haven't talked to a doctor yet, we will be in our second trimester, and we're going in Mid-November with the average low temp being in the 50's.

What are your guys opinion?

We arrive Sept 10th - so far I have been given the all clear to visit - I will be 25 weeks the day we leave.

I live in San Diego - I feel like the risk is just as high here as in Florida with the weather we have been having.

Its personal - its a mental thing - its a physical thing.
Its got to be a person by person answer and every persons answer is going to be different and emotional.

My opinion is always to trust the experts. I trust my doctor, I trust the scientists at the CDC. I trust my good friend who works at NIH. He says the CDC is generally very conservative when it comes to their travel advisories. So if they thought there was a risk of travel to any city in FL, they would advise against it. You know the only "experts" I don't trust? The media. It's definitely hard not to bc it's so in your face, but I am trying to make myself only listen to doctors and scientists, rather than people on the internet and social media.

With my trip, I am prepared to cancel the day before we go if I have to. At this point though, I see no reason to cancel. Luckily you have plenty of time before November for new news and updates :-)

I hear what you say about trusting the experts. We are not telling our pediatrician about going because if he sees a .000027% risk of something, he will still advise against it. For an example of what I'm talking about, he told us not to go in the swimming pool with our baby at our resort during summer vacation because.....and I'm dead serious when I say this..."You could be holding your kid in the water, then a couple hornets from a nest start attacking you, and you drop your kid in the water....." This is the type of doctor I'm dealing with. When we go to her doctor, hopefully him/her is more reasonable and looks at all the facts in front of them.

If we do go, one thing I'm thinking about cancelling because of possible risk is over at Fort Wilderness at the Hoop Dee doo Revue. Just beacuse of what they are doing over at River Country seems to possible pose the biggest risk. We are staying at Pop Century with a Preferred Pool View....a cement lovers dream. I would have changed my hotel if I was staying at POR just because of all the stagnant water.

One day at a time you have to look at it. You can't just cancel because every worry wart says so.

Yikes - re: your pediatrician! Haha. Both my pediatrician and my OB are very much - this is what the American Academy of Pediatrics says, and this is what the Obstetrics people recommend. Which is why my OB is advising me to pay attention to what the CDC is saying bc they are the disease experts - she is only a fetal and women's health expert :-) good luck with whatever you decide and whatever you do! And congrats on your surprise #2!

Yes! This is the thing... Listening to an OB about Zika is like taking legal advice from someone who watches a lot of Law & Order. Perhaps they are monitoring the CDC reports, and can give you their opinion - but they aren't epidemiologists or trained with any specific knowledge about the virus. They are one source of information, not the grand Poobah source of all knowledge.

This is a personal decision but my view is not to stop living your life. Zika more than likely will be widespread across the USA by next year. Also it has not been full confirmed that Zika is the cause of the birth defects it is a possible cause.

I canceled in part because the magic was just lost as it was starting to become stressful. My husband is a worry wart and if I got a single bug bite there he might have a melt down. He still wants to bring the bug spray to DL. The whole thing is really puzzling. I read they are spraying in the Carolinas and killing Bees, but they don't even have Zika clusters yet. I can't tell if this is like the Ebola scare that will amount to nothing or as my doctor suggested it may be too late by the time they are able to gather the data needed to sort it out.

I don't judge anyone still going, heck if my doctor didn't freak out I would still be going, but a good doctor is hard to find these days and I can't have her mad at me... she might tug on the baby a little too hard when getting it out. :scared:

Good for you! I was in Mexico while pregnant two weeks before the first documented case happened in Mexico, unknowingly. Months later when zika became a thing, was all over the media, and I calculated the timing of our trip I worried the rest pf my pregnancy even though the ultrasounds all looked okay. For me it's not worth the worry. Pregnancy brings enough worries, I wouldn't want to add to it. And I am NOT the type to go overboard with precautions. I took a cruise during each of my pregnancies, traveled, ate hot dogs & cold cuts that weren't heated up. Total rebel here. Zika though I wouldn't want to mess with if I could help it.
