50’s Prime Time Café – Lunch - Hollywood Studios

50-sign.jpg

We checked into the 50’s Prime time café which is right next to the Hollywood & Vine restaurant we had breakfast at. I was really looking forward to this one as nearly all the reviews I read were outstanding. The furniture and décor is very close to what I expected from the time period so that was pretty cool. We waited in the crowded lounge/bar area for about 15 minutes until our seat was ready. In the lounge area they had an old style black and white TV and furniture. We had an 11:30 a.m. ADR and wouldn’t have been able to get near the place without it. It was very busy.

Menu

Appetizers:
- Beer-Battered Onion Rings - served with horseradish sauce (we had ranch as well).
- Fried Herb Cheese - lightly breaded, served with toasted French bread and fresh fruit

Entrees:
- Kids - Garden Salad, Grilled Hot Dog, and French fries.
- Caesar Salad with Chicken - Romaine lettuce tossed with Caesar dressing, grated parmesan cheese, garlic croutons topped with sliced grilled chicken
- Old-Fashioned Pot Roast - slow-cooked until fork tender served with mashed potatoes, carrots, celery and onions

Drinks:
- Iced Tea
- Chocolate Milk
- Chocolate Milkshake
- Pirate's Punch (Minute Maid light raspberry lemonade served in a souvenir Pirate Cup with a glowing Tinker Bell or Captain Hook clip-on light)

Desserts:
- S'mores
- Brownie Sundae
- Kids - Ice Cream Sundae

Food Review

We ordered the usual iced teas and chocolate milk for our son, but decided to surprise our daughter with the Pirate Punch. It came with a green glowing light up tinker bell and was an instant hit. To start the meal off we ordered the fried cheese and onion rings appetizers. The fried cheese comes with fresh fruit, bread, and of course fried cheese. The grapes were crunchy and juicy and the strawberries were just right as well with no blemishes we could see. The fried cheese has a crunchy herbed batter and a softer white cheese inside. It was very good, especially when used on the lightly toasted baguette slices.

The onion rings were equally as good. Since the wife doesn’t care for horseradish at all, she ordered it with ranch on the side as well. The onion rings were large and cooked perfectly. They had a slight beer batter taste to them and went very well with either dip we had or even ketchup. The horseradish dip I had was a creamy variety that complimented the onion rings.

I ordered the pot rot entrée based, in part, on all the glowing reviews I’ve read. I wasn’t disappointed. The meat was super tender and the spices and gravy really accented the taste and texture of the pot roast. The carrots did add some color, but they were not really there as much as I expected them to be. The gravy sauce has a very rich beefy flavor to it and is just the right consistency for this dish. I highly recommend this dish if you like pot roast even minutely.

DW wanted something a little lighter and ordered the Caesar Salad with Chicken. The grilled chicken was moist and tender and the dressing had good flavor. The lettuce was crisp and cool and lovely – no nasty brown edges here! A great light lunch.

My daughter really wanted the grilled hot dog meal. We got her a small garden salad with ranch as well. When the hot dog came, we split it between the kids and they just demolished it. The fries were good as well.

For dessert we ordered Dad’s Brownie sundae and the S’mores. My daughter got a small ice cream sundae as part of her meal as well, so there was plenty of sugar to go around for sure! The brownie sundae was decadent and ultra rich. The brownie itself was large and very moist. It was covered by vanilla ice cream, m&m’s, whipped cream, chocolate fudge sauce, and caramel corn. This was a very nice treat and by the time we finished it off, we were getting a bit stuffed.

The S’mores were visually quite appealing with the lightly toasted tops and the drizzled chocolate sauce. The marshmallows were warm and gooey while the chocolate underneath was just warm and full of rich flavor. The graham cracker was also a nice texture accompaniment to the dish.

Atmosphere:

One of the reason’s you come to the 50’s Prime time Café is the detailed theme. From the moment you walk in, you are immersed into the styles, colors, and ambiance out of some 50’s TV show (for those of us not born until the 70’s – it’s the closest we have to the real deal).

The bar next to the waiting area lounge

The wait staff wears period authentic outfits. I’ve heard that some of the staff really get into the roles and sass you to eat your greens and such, but we didn’t really experience that on this trip. The service was just average here for our visit.

Overall, a good experience. Everyone enjoyed the food and 50’s vibe. But we definitely need the ADR to get in.

Note:
I didn’t take any pictures myself of the desserts or the interior décor, but I was able to find some similar ones that are close to what we had so the reviews could be more meaningful to you all. Thanks to the picture takers.

Thanks again for another great review of one of my future ADR's! And yes you can sign me up for the S'mores! Wow do they look good!:thumbsup2

Thanks for the great review. I really want to try the 50s PTC, the food always looks so good - I am just a little afraid of being picked on!

Mama Melrosa – Dinner - Hollywood Studios (w/Fantasmic seats)

We had an early dinner here in order to get the Fantasmic dinner package. For those who don’t know about it yet, Disney sells limited packages with dinners (Brown Derby, Mama Melrose, and Hollywood & Vine) at the Hollywood Studios Park with special reserve seating tickets for the Fantasmic show. So instead of waiting the estimated 60-90 minutes in lines, you only need to wait about 30 minutes (More on this later). By the time we arrived at our dinner reservation, we were just beat down tired and hot from a super long day at Hollywood studios.

Menu

Appetizers
-Artisan Breads and Spreads - freshly baked breads served with an arugula and chive pesto, sun-dried tomato, roasted vegetable and roasted garlic spreads
- Mozzarella and Tomatoes - with marinated sweet onions, balsamic drizzle, extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil

Entrees
- Oven Baked Chicken alla Parmesan over spaghetti
- Charred Butcher Tender Steak gorgonzola butter on roasted red pepper polenta, grilled asparagus and red wine reduction
- Penne pasta with cheese sauce and a salad

Desserts
- Warm Chocolate Truffle Cake
- Chocolate Ice Cream
- Kids Ice Cream Sundae

Food Review

After a 15 minute wait for a table we were finally seated. My son had fallen asleep so they let us bring in the stroller and park it next to the table so he could sleep for a bit more. They made sure our table had room next to it and had a highchair waiting if he woke up. We were all very hot and exhausted from our frantic Hollywood studios pace this day. The initial round of iced teas and chocolate milk was quickly consumed and we placed our order.

The Artisan bread appetizer was pretty fun for all of us. It features several types of breads and plenty of different types of dips to experiment with. The pesto was only average to me while the fire roasted pepper dip was very good. It has a pleasant sweetness and rich roasted pepper flavor to it. I also really enjoyed the oven roasted garlic bulb, the garlic easily spread on the bread. It was creamy and mild, wonderful!

The mozzarella and fresh tomatoes with olive oil and balsamic vinegar was also a very nice appetizer. The texture or the semi firm cheese and the freshness of the ripe beefsteak tomatoes were an excellent combination. The flavors of the tomatoes were heightened by the balsamic vinegar and the olive oil. All items were excellent quality, I would certainly get this appetizer again.

DD ordered a side garden salad with her penne pasta with cheese sauce. It was perfect for her with tasty ranch dressing and large carrot and cumber slices. The pasta was good also and there was plenty to split between the two kids. It was basically a fancy mac and cheese. DD was a bit put off in that it didn’t look like mac and cheese, but after one taste she ate it up. And DS just loves to eat so no worries there! ☺

When our meals came out, a basket or warm rolls came out with it. These rolls were also served with a small bowl pepper-seasoned olive oil. The olive oil was good, but a bit strong for some. The rolls themselves were tasty, fluffy and warm.

My wife ordered the Oven Baked Chicken alla Parmesan over spaghetti noodles. It was wonderful. The chicken was tender and moist with a crispy, crunchy crust. It had plenty of melted, gooey mozzarella cheese on top. The pasta was perfectly cooked. And the tasty tomato sauce was wonderful, slightly sweet and tangy – the perfect way to bring the dish together.

My entrée was called “Charred Butcher Tender Steak gorgonzola butter on roasted red pepper polenta, grilled asparagus and red wine reduction”. It is a long and fancy name for a Blue cheese accented steak with wine sauce served with polenta and asparagus. The steak was cooked perfectly for medium as can be seen below in the picture I took. The presentation was very nice, although I wondered why the wine reduction sauce was on the other side of the plate. My guess is that it was to create an artistic contrast when served. The steak also had nice grilled texture on the outside while still remaining tender on the inside. The steak and wine sauce had excellent flavor and I really liked the red pepper polenta as it gave it some flavor. The asparagus was just ok, but then it’s not one of my favorite veggies, green beans or broccoli would have been better to my taste.

Desserts! We were getting full by this part of the meal, but couldn’t pass up an effort to see what new dessert we would find. They have gelato - Italian ice cream.....I ordered just chocolate. Oh happy day! It was perfectly suited for the hot and exhausting day we had experienced so far. Very smooth and creamy and exquisitely chocolate!

Chocolate Gelato

Wanting to try something a little different, we also opted to try out the Warm Chocolate Truffle Cake. The cake was a chocolate cake with a liquid chocolate filling. Another winner for dessert, but then it’s nearly impossible to go wrong with chocolate! We ended up eating the cake with our chocolate gelato. Wow! The two together were wonderful. While the cake was good, it was much better with the side of gelato – chocolate or vanilla would both work great with this cake.

My daughter’s ice cream sundae was pretty much the average table service kid’s sundae that we encountered. It had vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauces and sprinkles. It must have been satisfying since it was devoured between the 2 kids pretty quickly.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere was fairly pleasant here. It was a darker restaurant with little lights all over. The table felt somewhat private where we were, which was great while my son slept. There was art on the walls that gave it an old Italian neighborhood restaurant feeling. Also, most of the tables and walls were dark wood, so this added to the subdued ambiance here. The waiting staff was good, we never waited for a refill on our drinks.

Fantasmic Pacakage

Fantasmic001.jpg

Fantasmic Stadium on Fire! – All part of the show. (Cool picture but not mine).

When we paid the bill with our dining plan they gave us slips of paper for the fantastic show. It said to meet near the back gate by 8 p.m. Seems easy enough doesn’t it? We showed up at 8 p.m. and there were several other families (about 20 people all together) there wondering what to do since no CM’s could be found to help. A few people stopped by and said the show was sold out and there were no seats. This made all of us a bit angry as we had paid a good price for the dinner with the tickets and were supposed to have ‘Revered’ seats. We finally got someone and they were on the radio for a while until a supervisor could finally come down. He tried to tell our now nervous group that the Fantasmic seating was full and that we would have to come back about 2 hours later. Our group started to get fairly angry, especially since many of us had small kids and worked so hard to secure these Fantasmic seating tickets. We had all arrived on time and we expected Disney to seat us accordingly. Finally after much walkie-talkie chatter, they were able to confirm they had reserved seats left. So, about 5 minutes before the show started, they led us back and seated us in the awesome reserved section. It sure caused everyone a bit of stress until we got there. And we all sat down, literally, as the show began. It was worth it though; the Fantasmic show is a MUST SEE at Hollywood studios.

Yum! Great review of Mama Melrose! Thanks! :thumbsup2

We plan to eat there as well on our January trip. In fact, we're eating at almost all the same places you ate!

I too have wondered about the Fantasmic package. I understand it's 2 credits each on the dining plan. It would be good to have reserved seating, but wouldn't it be just as easy to have an early dinner at Mama Melrose, play for a bit, then find a seat at Fantasmic? We're going in January so there shouldn't be massive crowds...

I just don't know if it would be worth using 2 credits each instead of 1. What do you think? :confused3

The Fantasmic package does not cost extra credits: the package is only 1 table service credit at Hollywood & Vine (buffet) and at Mama Melrose (menu type.) The only Fantasmic package which is 2 table service credits is the Brown Derby (it's a signature restaurant, always 2 table service credits.)

It is soooo worth getting the package. You can wait in line as long as 2 hours for Fantasmic...not worth it! We did the Fantasmic Package at Hollywood & Vine in May 2008, and we're doing Mama Melrose package in September...

Lovin' the reviews; it's nice to hear from a foodie with kids! Keep em coming!

Thanks for sharing your Mama Melrose review, I think we might try this one next time we do the Fantasmic Dinner Package. Sorry to hear that you had so much hassle with getting your seating. We have done this a couple of times in the past and always found it worked smoothly.

Love the reviews :thumbsup2 and the pictures are wonderfully yummy looking food porn!:woohoo: Waiting not so patiently for more...popcorn::

We nearly had that problem at Fantasmic too, luckily we had run out of rides to do so went to our seats about 30 minutes earlier than the tickets said and the reserved seating was very full already. I think Disney need to say you still have to get there early or not allow people in until a set time. Also only sell the same amount of Fantasmic Dining tickets as they have seats!

Wow, what great reviews. I leave in 4 days for a 2 week vacation and I planned on posting a dining review, but I don't know if I can do as well as this one. Thanks for sharing, nicely done!!!!!!!! :goodvibes
