Hello fellow DIS'ers,
I thought this would be fun, I haven't written a trip report in many years, but since this is only our 2nd trip to HHI I wanted to share the experience.
Trip setup: 1st trip back to HHI in ~3 years.
Cast of Characters:
Myself-Mark
The Mrs
The Kids:
Eric(14)
Haley(12)
Luke(9)
Emily(7)
Grandma T(The Mrs's Mom)
Grandpa T(The Mrs's Dad)
So as DVC'ers in Ohio with school age kids The Mrs only allows us to vacation during school breaks. So we usually try to get AP's and make 3 trips in a year; Summer, Christmas, Summer. Well this summer is our off summer so we were lucky enough to get a 2 bedroom in back at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort. We really enjoyed our first stay here we were excited to get a room during the week we wanted. This trip we have the in-laws join us.
Departure: We hit the road after work this past Friday, and traveling with the in-laws we divided then11 hour drive in half. We spent our 1st night at a nice Hampton Inn in Hillsville, VA. We hit the road Saturday morning to finish off the trip. We drove the final 5ish hours and finally arrived on the island. Saving a few points we spent Saturday night right next door at Days Inn. It was an okay stay, beds were a little uncomfortable, but it served its purpose, a place to sleep. Saturday night we did a lot of swimming and then a dinner at the Big Bamboo Cafe in Coligny Plaza. The food was okay, but our service was pretty bad, which was disappointing.. We made it through the meal, but it was a bummer as we really enjoyed this place out last trip. After dinner we checked out a few shops that were still open.
Sunday: check-in day!! We checked out of the Day Inn and headed next-door to check-in. A room was ready but we waited as we were hoping for a room near the pool. With 4 kids it was important to be near all the excitement. So we just checked in and headed back to the shops of Coligny Plaza for some more shopping and to pickup the kids airbrush shirts. Man did they come out great! Geoff the artist did a great job. From there our room still wasn't ready so being from Ohio we headed to the best themed restaurant on the island, Mangiamos... lol. All OSU Buckeye memorabilia everywhere. It was our 1st time there and we really enjoyed our lunch. While we were eating we got the text that our room was ready so back to the resort to finally unload the van. Grandma and Grandpa T have been able to join us on several trips to Orlando because as a family of 6 we have to get a room big enough that they can come along no problems, but what was great was their 1st impression of the HHI room. Once he door opened and Grandma T got done checking it out she gasp, "Man this is swank!"... The room theming in the HHI rooms is so much different than the OKW room we usually have, and really does give you that upscale rustic feel. After we unloaded we headed to the pool for some much needed pool time. We swam for about 3 hours.. lol. Before we headed back up to the room to get ready for the evening. Everyone but Haley and I ate some of the food we brought for dinner, but we splurged for some all you can eat seafood at Captain Gillans. Oh man did it hit the spot! The crab leg clusters weren't like the China buffet ones we'd get back home.. lol. And I even had some oysters! Unfortunately for Haley and I we only had about 50 minutes to enjoy our dinner as The Mrs told us we'd better be back for the campfire at 7. We made it back but some rain forced it indoors. Although we didn't have a real fire we still had a GREAT time with Chale and Ally. Our team, Team 'Ally'gators won the Cheeky, Cheeky challenge even though it was ruled a tie.. . After the fun songs and dancing it was time for some s'mores to get us ready for the nights movie, A Bug's Life. Again due to the rain it was indoors but it was still nice to unwind. After the movie the 3 older kids and Grandpa T wanted to do some night fishing so we got the poles ready and headed to the end kf the pier. It was just our group and we spent about an hour fishing in the darkness. Luke was the most successful as he landed about 6 small sharks, but we were only able to pull in 4 of them; Eric and I each caught one, while Grandpa T and Haley came up empty. We decided to pull in the lines about midnight to turn in for the evening. After we got the rest in bed I headed up to the Shelter Cove Kroger's to pickup some milk, juices, bread, and lunch meat only to return to a little mess. With all the excitement, heat, food, late bedtime, little Emily had a but of a "Protein Spill".. . Special thanks to the front desk for promptly getting us some new blankets and pillows at such a late hour. Now with everyone settled in, again, we were all off to bed.
That's the start of our week trip. I don't have a computer with me so I'm trying to write these updates on my phone so please forgive any grammatical errors. Also, I will try to add photos as I know everyone loves pictures.
I hope you all will tune in for the rest of our 1st trip back to HHI in 3 years.
Until next time,
Mark
