DDC XXXIV: The Original Home Of The DISDads!!!

Back on my second midnight shift.
Which totally sucks since I hate doing one.
Second week of this and hopefully that'll be it for double midnights for a while.

In other news. My laptop, which I use pretty much exclusively for photography, is giving up the ghost.
It takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour to boot up.
The latter means several crashes, windows recovery, etc.

So it's off to Dell to order a new one.
We get a small (very small) discount through my work. Clicked the link. Found the one I want... but a better one is on sale ($500 off) for the same price. Cool! And... there's an online coupon for an additional $150 off. Cooler! But I can't apply the coupon. Crap. Click the "chat now" link and talk with someone from Dell. Takes forever. Eventually he gives me a quote... which is higher than originally seen. He immediately types to ignore that. Several minutes later, he quotes me the price without the company discount or the coupon discount. I tell him what the subtotal, total and total with tax should be. Several more minutes go by.
After two hours... TWO HOURS!! of being online, he finally gives me a price that's.... $50 less than the one I gave him. Um... yes I'll take it!

Just too bad it had to be such a process.

Anyone know the difference between a 15 vs 18 guage tennis string?

3.
3 is the difference.

Not sure how I missed out on joining the DisDads but we just got home from an offsite trip for my niece's dance competition that wa held at the Contemporay. We sadly didn't get to do the parks this time but we did do a lot of resort hopping that we normally wouldn't do on a strictly Disney trip.

Gentlemen (Ahem),

Please accept this message as my application to join your illustrious ranks. I am a 36-year-old father of two from RI. My dear wife has a grand enough sense of humor to have tolerated me for the past twelve years, and is kind enough to pretend not to notice when I get dust in my eyes watching the kids at Disney. Our children include a 4-year-old son, and a 21-month-old feral daughter who don't yet know they'll be seeing Disney and Beach Club again the 15th-22nd of November.

I have studied the requirements and find I qualify for most but, sadly, not all. I will submit to you, however, that some of the earliest photos of me were taken at Disney in 1981, and show me with my own father, a member of the original WDWdads. I'm also a small business owner who, through rough calculations, has wasted tens of thousdands of dollars worth of man hours planning trips, researching ride heights, making ADR's, and compiling the most complete Disney spreadsheets an OCD Dad can manage.[/

Happy Thursday morning. Another dominating doubles tennis performance last night to go along with Monday night. Even better news is that swim season is over and no more chauffeuring for a couple weeks.

I must admit I had no idea there was so much technique and science behind a tennis racquet.
.

Not to mention racquet weight, balance, length size, head size, grip size, and power level. Then, the string materials are natural gut, monofilament, multifilament, poly, Kevlar, co-poly, & aluminum and tensions amounts. And, the strings are shaped or designed for extra power, control, spin, or touch. There are really billions of combinations of racquets and strings. The pros are still terrific athletes who use the science and sponsorship for their advantage.

So it's off to Dell to order a new one.

Congrats on the new computer and two hours of online haggling. i use the dell PC as well, but if I had the money, I'd change everything over to iPhone, iPad,and MacBook.

As for your astute calculation, you're WRONG. :lmao: The difference is actually 7. There is 15, 15L, 16, 16L, 17, 17L, & 18.

‘Morning all…
Stay cool gents. The heat has officially been labeled as dangerous here so I’m pretty sure it’s worse for some of y’all. There was a new temperature record set here yesterday. Not for the high, but rather for the low. Even with the sun below the horizon the air couldn’t see clear to cool itself down below 80. Which means the mercury will hit expected highs for today hours earlier than normal- likely by mid-morning - and stay there.

Nasty!

I though DW was going to give up half way into the camp and drive up to northern VA just to make sure her kid was ok! :lmao: But then she got a text saying everything was ok. I'm sure you veteran dads can have a good laugh at that! lol
Laugh? Naaaaaa… Just a knowing smile and a slight nod of the head will do here.
Letting ‘em go is both the toughest and most important thing we have to do.

 You don't say!!
University schedules vary radically from the public schools.
The boy has to be on campus August 10th.

But at least he can drive himself up there now.

Kinda like Florida lobster vs Maine Lobster?

Some of the restaurants up north don't even serve biscuits n gravy.
 Sounds about right.

One of the things in particular our young’en noted about the road trip they took up to NYC was the distinct lack of biscuits (well that and decent tea).

Not trying to take credit for her success. Sadly, I watched these other kids at the tournament last weekend and can tell that some of them were playing with racquets too old, too heavy, or too small for their swing style. I let dd try several of my racquets and string set-ups, and then found her the right racquet & string & string tension for her racquet. Anyone know the difference between a 15 vs 18 guage tennis string? I do and have that advantage right now. It will decrease once she gets older and playing on same age groups in HS teams, as the coaches will help pick the equipment for the other players.
Seems to me like she’s got about the best advocate she could ask for.
Nice work there.

Spread sheets are our friends. ::yes::
Is that a Man Law or does it need to become one?

Sounds like you gave yourself some of the best customer service I encountered.
I bet Dell would hire you if you moved to India and accepted an 87% pay cut.

Excellent news. Now you’ve got some time to sit back and vegetate for a spell.
Well, except for that whole going out and regularly playing tennis bit of it…

but still…

Morning Guys. Go away for a couple of days and things really move along in here. Welcome to the new guys, hello to the old.

Played another soccer game last night with just 11 guys, luckily in was only in the 80s last night but 2 games in 4 days with no subs and lots of humidity has made for one sore body on this old boy's part.

Have a good one all; stay cool!

 Sounds about right.

I forgot about the tea. Sweet tea in the south is certainly something special. Funny story. My mom couldn't cook and the only tea I ever had growing up with the Lipton instant tea crap, which I rarely drank because it was so bad. Fast forward and when i got married, DW asked if i wanted tea. I thought that meant that same crap i had as a kid. She brought her own tea brewing machine from home and made a pitcher of sweet tea. It is amazing, and we still use that same machine. Them northern folks just don't know what they are missing.

As for the love of spread sheets, we can add a man law, but i think it's just universally accepted. :lmao:

That's a lot of running. Keep hydrated. Think you can get a MLS contract?

You really ARE a smart dad! Nothing like seeing a kid trying to improve their skills and not have the right equipment to do it with. Kudos for giving DD the extra advantage!

Spread sheets are our friends. ::yes::

Now say it like the aliens in Toy Story! :rotfl2:

How did you do with her being gone to her first camp? Were you driving back to get her too? I know that feeling, but now that she is a freshman and lost her freaking hormone mind, I'm ready to find her a camp to stay in for the rest of the summer. :lmao:

Have to say... I wasn't quite fully prepared for it. The house was eerily quiet. Didn't quite know what to do when I got home from work. DD and I always do something after work just to reconnect and have some fun. Had to come home and stare at my wife for a week :hyper2:

Oh the hormones...:headache: An all-girl camp sounds just about right! :lmao:

I had never seen that one. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some dust in my eyes I need to wipe out...

Sorry... should have given a warning with that one! First time I had seen it caught me off guard, too. Stupid dust.

Back on my second midnight shift.

Happy Thursday morning. Another dominating doubles tennis performance last night to go along with Monday night. Even better news is that swim season is over and no more chauffeuring for a couple weeks.

Congrats on another win! and Woohoo! No chauffeuring!! :dancer::dancer::dancer::dancer::dancer::dancer::dancer:

Way to go, old man! :thumbsup2 Soccer is one of those high body demand sports... kind-of reminds me of Dory... "Just keep running... just keep running..." :lmao: and then you hope to hear "SCORRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEE!!!!"

If someone is looking for a 51 year old fullback that doesn't score the answer is yes.

I seriously considered a Mac. But all my Photoshop plugins are PC and that tipped the scales.

Darned algebra.

No kidding! Today we're getting up to 75!

Okay, kidding (although it's supposed to hit 85 later in the week... which is about as hot as it gets up here.)

There was a new temperature record set here yesterday. Not for the high, but rather for the low. Even with the sun below the horizon the air couldn’t see clear to cool itself down below 80.

Yikes. So if you don't have AC, there's no relief. That's getting dangerous for some folk, isn't it?

Which means the mercury will hit expected highs for today hours earlier than normal- likely by mid-morning - and stay there.

Nasty!

Stay cool! Literally.

First tropical waves are popping up in the Atlantic. Oh, goody. Nothing to worry about now but the last thing I need is a hurricane.

Throw back Thursday. this is from my trip to the UK. The kid and I along with the Brit and his family rented a Narrow Boat to cruise around the canals of the West Midlands. Cruising around was in reality going from one Pub to another. Good times.

Like Rob said, then you haven't had grits prepared correctly. I like grits with breakfast foods as well as shrimp n grits.

That's been my experience with grits, too. As Jim Gaffigan says, like a bag of wet cement.

Momma was a prue bred Florida Cracker. She knew grits and also "Took pride in her grits." Never liked them never will. My dad was the only other holdout in the family until late in his life he betrayed me and began to eat them. Chalked that up to the onset of dementia.

Wow, didn't know all that went into selecting a racquet. Guess that is why I wasn't very good at it. Well, that and I only played a couple of times. Good work.

Played another soccer game last night with just 11 guys, luckily in was only in the 80s last night but 2 games in 4 days with no subs and lots of humidity has made for one sore body on this old boy's part.

Glad you made it through with everything intact.

I forgot about the tea. Sweet tea in the south is certainly something special.

That is another thing I don't get. Love ice tea but the unsweetened variety. Guess my Northern heritage is stronger than my Southern one. Whenever we visited my Aunt's house, she would pour my tea before she added around 20 pounds of sugar for the others.

First tropical waves are popping up in the Atlantic. Oh, goody. Nothing to worry about now but the last thing I need is a hurricane.

This sounds like something people should know.
"You know what we need about now? A hurricane. Haven't had a good hurricane in a while."

Sorry about the midnight shifts - don't know how ya do it. Good deal at least on getting a new computer despite the hassles.

Back at ya on the stay cool part. I'm ready for shorts and sweatshirt / football weather myself.

Coming from the north I'm one of those that thought Lipton instant was the only kind of tea. Started working for current company here in Nashville and found I loved sweet tea but the bought with kidney stones required my caffeine intake to one drink a day and no cant remember last time I had a big 'ole sweet tea.

Positive thoughts that hurricane season is minimal impact for all that live in affected areas. UK trip / pup crawl sounds like a blast - cheers!

Tournament draw out and dd got a 6 seed (8). I'm guessing it was more random that anything else. She'll play at 9:30 AM Sat and if she wins, 4:00 PM. I don't like that long of a wait for her as she will burn too much energy outside as well as hanging in the heat. I'll have to figure out how to hose her down and go see a movie to kill some time.

Now say it like the aliens in Toy Story! :rotfl2:

Kevlar?!? At first I thought you were talking about the strings being made of kevlar! ha!

Yes, Kevlar, I was talking about them making it into a tennis string. And, another company uses aluminum in the tennis string. Not surprising, it is called "big banger". As for the quote, I was going for Finding Nemo. Fish are our friends.

If someone is looking for a 51 year old fullback that doesn't score the answer is yes.
.

I'm sure you could cover Messi.

You're right. We don't.
And I'd love to try some authentic southern sweet tea.
But wouldn't have a clue where to find some.

Let me know when you're stopping by. Bring something good to eat from Canada and I'll get you fixed up. And by fixed, I mean high on sugar. :lmao:

When seeing pictures of you and Andrianna, she must get her looks from her mother. :lmao: BTW, drinking and boating sounds like a great idea. :rotfl: :drinking1

!

I have a big sweet tooth as well, but prefer to eat food of the drinks. I can usually only handle one glass as well. However, give me a plate of chocolate chip cookies, and prepare for an re-enactment scene from the cookie monster.

So all this talk of sweet tea got me thinking. How does the sweet tea at WDW compare to good southern sweet tea? I remember having the Gold Peak tea from the beverage station at the resort and ordered it from a couple table service places (probably the same Gold Peak stuff I guess). I also enjoy an iced tea in the summer but always brew my own fresh, never the powered crud. I probably go a little easier on the sugar than you would in the south, though.

Darned algebra.
:rotfl2: I thought the same thing, but you beat me to it!

Ah yes, I can do a decent cookie monster impression myself! I found a recipe for Minnie's Bake Shop cookies once. Three kinds of chocolate chips and you measure them out with a full size ice cream scoop. Now they were sinful! But so good...

Let me know when you're stopping by. Bring something good to eat from Canada and I'll get you fixed up. And by fixed, I mean high on sugar. :lmao:

Thank you very much for clarifying!
I've driven through a bit of Kentucky (back and forth to WDW) a few times.
Now I have a reason to stop.
