How a fight over beer landed Walt Disney World in Orlando instead of St. Louis

Walt Disney dispute with Augie Busch pushed The Happiest Place On Earth to Florida

ORLANDO, Fla.Walt Disney World is part of the fabric of Florida, but did you know the theme park almost ended up in St. Louis instead of Orlando?
University of Central Florida History professor Dr. Jim Clark said Walt Disney had his eye on the “Show Me” state well before he began eyeing the “Sunshine State”.
But a fight over beer changed everything.
After successfully introducing the public to Disneyland in California, Clark said Disney was looking for a second location.
The animation mogul considered Niagra Falls and another area near Washington, D.C.
“They seemed to settle on St. Louis for a different kind of attraction, kind of incorporating the city and the Mississippi and Walt got into a disagreement with Augie Busch — the family that owned Anheuser-Busch, makers of Busch beer and Budweiser — and basically Augie Busch said to Walt, ‘Hey you are not coming to St. Louis if you are not serving beer,’ and he wanted the beer concession and Walt said, ‘We are not going to serve any beer or liquor in the Magic Kingdom’ and it kind of went downhill from there. And literally, they had the dinner the night before, Augie Busch made a comment, and they were supposed to sign the papers the next morning, and Walt called it off, so it was that close.”
Clark said Busch was greatly insulted.

“That was his thing. I mean, he had the beer concession for the football teams, for the baseball teams, and here was this major thing coming to St. Louis telling him, ‘No, we don’t want your product in our theme park,’” Clark said.
But Disney wasn’t budging.
“Walt was worried that it was going to end up kinda like a carnival or a county fair or something like that and he did not want drinking in his park,” Clark said.
After things went downhill in St. Louis, Clark said Disney decided on Florida but still had to check out several locations before committing to Orlando.
“They looked at Palm Beach County and MacArthur, the billionaire, offered him three-thousand acres and Walt said, ‘No, that’s not enough.”
Then they narrowed it down to four sites.
“One was near Bradenton, the other near Daytona and Walt said he did not want to compete with a free attraction, meaning the beach... so those were knocked out,” Clark said.

After that, Disney checked out Ocala and Orlando.
Clark said the Disney family had ties to Central Florida and that Walt’s parents were married in what is now the Ocala National Forest, so Walt knew the area well and chose to drive through it to scout its potential.
But Clark said his choice was made the next day when flying over Orlando.
“Where I-4 meets the turnpike he said, ‘That’s it.’”
After making that decision, Clark said it took a while for Disney to break ground because “he didn’t know the ground he was pointing out was underwater. He had to put in 16 feet of fill dirt to compensate for all the swamps.”
In total, Clark said it took another year to develop the land because the ground was so swampy.

The head boards are cool.

They must have gotten a great bulk deal on that grey vinyl plank that is on every home flip these days and is the total opposite of "turn of the 20th century atlantic boardwalk" theme. I dunno. They're all nice and clean looking but aside from some pictures and a pattern on the curtain what are we going for here. I guess they are really just going for "themed accents" and not thematic immersion anymore. Cheaper and easier to maintain and clean I suppose. Don't love being a debbie downer but that's my initial gut reaction to most of these room upgrades anymore. But I think I have to accept I'm not their target audience anymore, ha.

LOL.... here is a pic of the ACTUAL Boardwalk at Atlantic City.... huh... grey planks set in diagonals... not sure what you were expecting.

I’ll Debbie Downer with you! They just messed up my favorite resort :(. But I am sure I am in the minority who loved the Boardwalk style as it was.

Personally, I don't care for the headboards - the colors or pattern. It's better than the circus colors from before, but not what I would choose for a color scheme... just me probably.

I'm good with the diagonal look floor. In the couch pic it looks to be more brown and goes with the headboard and furniture. Hopefully the decade of grey is finally over.

But what's up with the curtains? I'm not sure they match anything.

The more I look at it, the more I think they just need to add a good rug and a bed runner. With the right colors I think they could pull this room together. I really don’t like it as is though.

That may be it! I think this article hits the nail on head. There is a tension between two audiences that is hard for Disney to manage:

Good & Bad of BoardWalk Inn’s New Rooms

Here's the most relevant part:

"Point being, if you look around the new BoardWalk Inn rooms at all, there’s a lot of visual interest. The aforementioned art, the custom furniture, furnishings, and fixtures. We haven’t discussed it yet, but there’s ornamental wainscoting, trim, and yellow/cream paint. It’s not simply bare and white walls. (I would’ve loved to see some of the old wallpaper retained; it’s coming back in style and was perfect!)

I mention all of this because I really like the new rooms at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, but must admit that there’s something about these that doesn’t completely “click” for me. Admittedly, if this were ~5 years ago, I’d be over the moon with these–they’re a huge improvement over the last generation of generic and dull new rooms. During that time, though, Walt Disney World and Imagineering have gotten a lot better at threading the needle (especially, in my opinion, with the new DVC villas).

For me, I think that can be distilled into these rooms being luxurious and chic rather than charming and whimsical. For the most part, these new rooms are great. They’re themed well. They look nice, stylish, and fresh. They offer functional improvements and overdue modernizations. I would hazard a guess that 95% of Walt Disney World first-timers will rate these higher than the old rooms.

It’s important to give these guests what they want and a caliber of quality that comports with the $500+ price points. (I think many fans underestimate just how often Disney gets complaints about “dated” guest rooms.) Balancing theme and luxury, especially with a style based on turn-of-the-century Atlantic City isn’t easy!

It also isn’t easy to cater to both first-time guests and repeat visitors who have been visiting Walt Disney World for decades. The two groups often want different things, and the latter can be difficult to please. Against that backdrop, we rate these new rooms at BoardWalk Inn very highly. They’re as adept at juggling two competing concepts as the promenade performers outside. But when it comes down to our own nostalgia or sentimentality, they just don’t quite have the same quirky charm as the old rooms."

All in all, not everyone will like refurbs when you've got two different sets of guests to please, but personally, I agree with the author in that Disney is finally getting a better balance.

Yeah, I agree, but rugs are a trip hazzard and harder to keep clean, and people steal the bed runners, so, they probably won't ever add them back to the rooms. 😒

the Grand Floridian Rooms that have been refurbished have rugs.
I brought a UV light with me one trip and took a look at the rug on the floor... (don't remember now which resort)... I'm really sorry I did as there were all sorts of "stains".... could have been innocent coffee spills, but of course it could also have been "other" kinds of stains... I really do like the new flooring :)

Cleaning products can also fluoresce under UV

These are outdoors though on the actual boardwalk... I guess I meant more like the inside of buildings and homes during that era would look.
many of the homes on the Cape or Nantucket have that weathered grey look as that is what sea air does. There is even a Benjamín Moore color called Nantucket gray. WHen I think beachy... I think white, blue and weathered grey. But that is the beauty of art, it is subjective.

Photos: Checking Out The Remodeled Rooms at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn

We got a look inside one of the recently renovated rooms of Disney’s BoardWalk Inn at Walt Disney World.

The new rooms feature colorful headboards along with plenty of white, teal and yellow accents. Artwork located throughout the room features Mickey, Minnie and the rest of their friends in turn of the 20th century outfits strolling along the BoardWalk.

Of course, the bathroom has also received an upgrade.

These delightful portraits of Mickey, Minnie and Pluto are hung to the side of the beds.

Another cute touch is this lamp littered with Mickey Mouse heads.

The bathroom is where I really feel this refurb went off the rails... the new, cool gray floor from the living space does not work with the old, warm sand/water tile that was carried forward. The living space is also primarily yellow so it's just jarring to me. The sliding glass door is a nice addition.

BC's "soft good" bathroom update looks much better overall IMO

ETA The BWV refurb pictures popping up also look barren so IDK if Disney is releasing rooms before they are fully finished/furnished, but I feel like Boardwalk in general is getting a lot less love than many other resorts.

Layout of Fort Wilderness DVC Cabins Revealed
DVC News has provided an extensive overview of the layout for the upcoming Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Positioned on the foundations of the existing cabins, these new accommodations aim to combine practicality and comfort for an enhanced guest experience.

In addition to the bedroom and great room details previously disclosed, the floor plan reveals the incorporation of a wooden deck, measuring about 8 feet by 20 feet. While the concept art primarily illustrates steps leading up to the deck, it’s worth noting that several cabins will also feature a ramp, ensuring accessibility for all guests.

Each cabin will be equipped with a charcoal grill, perfect for outdoor gatherings and family barbecues. Additionally, designated parking spaces will be available for the convenience of cabin occupants.
