Live Action Snow White - too far a departure from the original?

Does anybody truly think, for even a split second, that Disney allows actors in this kind of movie to make comments that aren't either pre-approved by the studio or scripted by the studio for the actor to repeat?

For decades, Disney has been fighting the extremely popular public narrative of "the older fairy tale movies are bad for young girls and teach them to just wait around for a man." That is why they have had Rachel make those comments. Any actor they hired to play this part in this movie would have been expected to say exactly the same things.

I find it hard to believe that Disney would have approved the comments Ziegler made. I can’t imagine that any comments that could be seen as controversial would be ok with Disney, especially when they need a winner in the box office as bad as they do right now.

I don’t think anyone let or didn’t let Rachel make comments lol I think she is allowed to speak freely.

Also Disney had 5 of the top 10 highest grossing films of 2023

4 of the top 10 in 2022

Disney is doing just fine lol

Well, I don't think that they told her to say it, but I also don't think they think it's a huge deal that she did, because it isn't. Most of the movie-going audience doesn't care one way or the other and only some very sensitive folks want to make this huge deal out of it. It's just an opinion, and a lot of peole share it too. I don't, and yet her comments have had zero impact on my interest in seeing the movie. Of course, my interest hasn't been that high due to it being a straight remake, but I'm still open-minded about it.

Also she’s about to absolutely crush it in Songbirds and Snakes as she did playing Maria in west side story

Look at her socials her obsession with Snow White even before the casting runs deep

Do you consider losing a studio hundreds of millions of dollars “crushing” it in West Side story?

You also realize box office money doesn’t equal profit right? Disney may have had big box office numbers lately, but they also have astronomical budgets, so the profit piece is what is significantly down.

For example the Marvels likely needs at least $600-700 M to break even. Anything after that will be profit.

I consider her performance as Maria crushing it. As I said so

Why you so hard on for how much money these movie studios make or don’t make. The obsession is strange. Maybe you’re Bob Iger?

I’m pretty sure Disney doesn’t dictate what actors in their movies say in public.

I have no idea how her performance was in West side story as I don’t like musicals so I never saw it, but I do know that the movie did not do well financially for Disney. I’m pretty sure studios would take profits over actors “crushing it” any day of the week. I will be seeing Songbirds and Snakes (not because of the actors but because I loved the book series) so I guess I will judge for myself. And pretty sure that movies won’t rise or fail bases on Rachel Ziegler alone. Snow White included.

I realized I love musicals but not plays.

I saw Hamilton, funny girl with Lea, frozen and they were all great. And then I saw a play and ooooboy I was bored

I loved the OG hunger games but had no interest in reading the new book until she was cast as Lucy, so I read the book and have tickets for 5pm thursday

The Olivia Rodrigo song for it is also really good

Not sure how much weight she will carry on what the movies do but for at least Snow White she is the title role. But I’m sure The Blaze and Fox Nation will have a lot to say about it regardless

I didn’t even know west side story was a Disney movie

Oh west side story was released dec 10 2021 in the middle of a winter covid spike. No wonder nobody went to see it

I wasn’t even sure it was released to theaters until I just looked it up

I recommend it. Zegler, Moreno, Ariana DeBose is a star….Ansel Elgort is a weirdo but he was good

Not only a Disney movie but a Disney movie with a huge name in Hollywood directing it. Which is why it was incredibly notable that it lost a good chunk of money.

Its notable if made any money being released in the thick of covid and a niche genre of musicals

To be fair, this one was at Fox before the purchase, so it is one of the projects that Disney inherited. They were still responsible for completing and releasing it though.

They inherited a few dogs from latter-day Fox.

Yep, that is fair. But also some huge winners inherited like Avatar.

Yeah, but I might argue that Avatar was one of the properties that drove the sale (along with Star Wars and the outstanding Marvel rights). Some of the other in-production movies were not in such great shape. Actually, that last couple of X-Men movies were pretty rough, but Disney put them out anyway.

Can you say its a story "based on the original". Using that disclaimer will allow the new story and its inclusion to diversity to stand on its own merits, instead of saying its a remake of a classic Disney story. I feel Disney is pushing inclusion to the point that the story, and the success of the film, is doomed to failure, simply to appear "woke".

I mean Barbie was deemed “woke” by all the usual suspects and it is the highest grossing WB movie of all time

Also who says woke in 2023 lol

I think what we learned with the right promotion and hype a movie will succeed. Snow White is forever and a day away from coming out and I think too this point all we have seen is a still of snow and the 7 dwarves

Not sure if Gal Gadot shopping a film of the hamas attack on Israel is the promotion they were looking for but time will tell

I think what we learned is a movie who really knows who its core audience is and then perfectly marketed to that audience will do very well. Barbie was expertly marketed to women who grew up playing with Barbies.

Super Mario was perfectly marketed to kids who grew up playing super Mario Bros.

as i said. moves that are marketed properly and with the right amount of hype surrounding it. and also Barbie made way too much money for just women that played with Barbies growing up

Barbie had an absolutely huge target audience. You can’t underestimate the power of Barbie. Snow White does not even remotely have the target audience that Barbie had. Sure it is a Disney classic. But the character itself I wouldn’t call beloved. You are just not going to get that wide range of people that you could get for a Barbie movie. Or heck even for Beauty and the Beast. If you totally remake the character of snow White to be something that she wasn’t in the original (which I will freely admit was kind of a dummy) then I think you miss out on the nostalgic aspect. You are going to get kids to see the movie of course, but probably not younger teens, older teens and young adults (many of whom made Barbie a raving success). Unless it’s absolutely amazing and word of mouth is strong, I just think the audience won’t be there for this movie. And that probably wouldn‘t change much no matter who the actress playing snow White is or how they portray the 7 dwarves.
