Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

The Walt Disney Company Q4 and FY 2023 Report
BURBANK, Calif. – The Walt Disney Company today reported earnings for its fourth quarter and full year ended September 30, 2023.
Financial Results for the Quarter and Full Year:
• Revenues for the quarter and year grew 5% and 7% compared to the prior-year quarter and prior year, respectively.
• Diluted earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations for the quarter increased to $0.14 from $0.09 in the prior-year quarter and for the year, decreased to $1.29 from $1.75 in the prior year.
• Excluding certain items(1), diluted EPS for the quarter increased to $0.82 from $0.30 in the prior-year quarter and for the year, increased to $3.76 from $3.53 in the prior year.
Key Points:
Disney+ added nearly 7 million core subscribers in the fourth quarter. Key streaming content in the quarter included theatrical titles Elemental, Little Mermaid and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3., original series Ahsoka and the Korean original series Moving.
• We continue to expect that our combined streaming businesses will reach profitability in Q4 of FY24, although progress may not look linear from quarter to quarter.
• Domestic ESPN revenue and operating income grew year over year in both fiscal year 2022 and fiscal year 2023, demonstrating the value of sports and the power of the ESPN brand.
• Experiences operating income increased by over 30% versus the prior-year quarter, with year over year growth across all international sites, Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club and Disneyland Resort. At Walt Disney World, we continue to manage against wage inflation and challenging comparisons to the prior year from the 50th anniversary celebration.
• We continue to aggressively manage our cost base, and have increased our annualized efficiency target to $7.5 billion, versus $5.5 billion previously.
• We expect to grow free cash flow in fiscal 2024 significantly versus fiscal 2023, approaching levels last seen pre-pandemic. This continued robust free cash flow growth, alongside our strong balance sheet, will position us well to address our investment and shareholder goals for the year and going forward.

SAG-AFTRA Reaches Tentative Agreement With Studios, Ending Actors Strike

After a grueling 118 days on strike, SAG-AFTRA has officially reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract with studios, a move that is heralding the end of the 2023 actors’ strike.

The SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Committee approved the agreement in a unanimous vote on Wednesday, SAG-AFTRA announced. The strike will end at 12:01 am Thursday. On Friday, the deal will go to the union’s national board on Friday for approval.

The performers’ union announced the provisional agreement on Wednesday, after about two weeks of renewed negotiations. The development on Wednesday came not long before a deadline of 5 p.m. that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had set for the union to give their answer on whether they had a deal.

Combined Disney+ and Hulu App to Launch in Beta This December

The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced on CNBC with the release of the company’s Q4 financial results that they would launch a combined app for Disney+ and Hulu in beta this December.
At least the standalone Hulu ain’t going away, and will still be there…

I guess they have no response for Epic Universe
I don't get it. Everyone knows WDE needs more attractions. Yet Iger and his cronies don't
Iger needs to be kicked out NOW! What a joke he’s become!

EDIT: Forget what I said. It came from Kevin Lansberry's mouth, and he’s about to get replaced by Hugh Johnston, who’s likely to speed up the timeline of the investment.

No Bill Hader? :(

Looks like Bill Hader was replaced with Tony Hale and Mindy Kaling was replaced with Liza Lapira as Fear and Disgust respectively. The new emotion Anxiety is played by Maya Hawke. Joy, Sadness, and Anger remain the same as Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black.

Yeah Disney Lowballed everyone but Poehler from the original cast and Hader and Kaling refused even after Disney tried to increase it.
