Has the price of DCL chased you away?

I think you have to understand that some of us have done a number of DCL cruises. I've done 14 and about to do my 15th. If your signature is correct you've done 1 DCL cruise. I felt just like you after the first Disney cruise. I've done 14 now and there are only so many pirate nights, mickey parades in the dining room, Disney movies, princess gatherings etc. etc. etc. I can do in one lifetime. I won't even get into the repetitive ports. DCL will always hold a special place in my heart. It was our first cruise as a family, my kids grew up on DCL, but I need variety. I need something fresh. Even my son picked the Carnival Vista over the Fantasy this Fall. I know there are posters on here that can go to WDW year after year, cruise DCL year after year, but some of us like to do new things. It doesn't mean we don't like the old things. It's not always about price either.

Same here... We have visited Magic Kingdom 8 times. The last time we went, we only stayed half a day. (then we skipped WDW for a year and a half, which was a good idea) When you start being used to something wonderful that your are priviledged to have access to, it is time to try new things.

When we started to talk about our upcoming family trip, we insisted on sailing on the Wonder or Magic instead of the Dream because we needed to try something new. Unfortunately, we are heading to Nassau again (4th time in Nassau: we are staying on the ship.)but can't wait to try new itineraries.

Taking a break from something (until we miss it) will be a good thing. It will help us appreciate it more when/if we come back...

We have a disabled adult daughter. We always bring a friend for her. As long as she still loves it, we will go. And the rest of our family still loves it too. Taking 7 in June on the fantasy for the 10 night cruise to Aruba, etc. at a cost of about 18000 plus air, excursions, liquor, etc. so the total will be well over 20000. we just got back from a crystal cruise for just me and my husband that was 12 days from Bali to Singapore. Had a penthouse with a butler and the total price including air and ore hotels was way less. We are lucky we can afford it. And if it means our kids and grand kids still want to go with us we will never give up Disney for a family trip.

I could never see Nassau again and I wouldn't miss it. I'll be there in about 6 weeks though. My son was 8 the last time we were at WDW. He's close to 13 now. He's super excited about vistiting WDW again. His excitement is making me excited. It' should be money well spent. If he wants to we'll go back in a few years to see Pandora and Stars Wars land. It's not something I need to do every year.

I honestly don't price DCL by other cruise lines though. I don't view it as the same experience. I price DCL based on what I would pay for a similar experience at WDW. I know I'm probably missing deals for WDW, but I wouldn't get any frequent visitor points because we live too far away. Without deal hunting, when I priced WDW on their website, I was only within $500 more for DCL. That's without any special show tickets which I could of arguably added. There are some non comparable aspects of that pricing. There is more to do at WDW, but on the ship you are still immersed in Disney activities, characters, and events. I was looking at Art of Animation which is a budget hotel and that could be considered a step down from the staterooms on the ship. Stuff like that.

We are about to go on our 6th Disney cruise this summer and have really enjoyed it. However, we have started to skip some of the shows and events because we have been before.
We looked at booking a Disney cruise over Christmas this year and the price was way too high and the itinerary not as appealing. So we are trying out RCL for a Southern Caribbean cruise.
We will still go on the odd Disney cruise, but would like to try other interesting itineraries such as Australia/New Zealand and Asia. There are so many places to go and only one lifetime :)

I think you bring up a very important point in this discussion. There is a difference in loving cruising and loving Disney cruising. Some people are in the love Disney cruising camp so other cruise lines have zero appeal to them. Others, (including myself), just love cruising in general. I fall into a zen state as soon as I board a ship and turn my iPhone off, I completely feel free and relaxed on board. I can get that on any ship and that's what I want in my vacations.

And then there are those of us in the middle - we love DCL and it would generally be our cruise line of choice, but we would cruise on SOME other cruise lines. We are just pickier about which those are.

I think it still puts us in the same camp of loving cruising, you just have more refined taste than me :rotfl2:

Absolutely!!!!! Have begun sailing other lines because of the price increases. All lines have their pros and cons. We love Disney, but I'm not willing to pay the additional cost over other lines. Our trips to WDW have also turned to other options because of where the price has gone.

I think everyone on here is pretty fussy. If we weren't we wouldn't be having these debates.

Not necessarily priced out although many of the cruises (especially during school breaks or Europe/Alaska itineraries) are just so overpriced. It's more that Disney itineraries are a bit boring and Disney cruises are just not worth the difference in pricing to us. My daughter is also outgrowing the characters/princesses. She doesn't go in the kids' club but loves to swim. Disney ships' pools are abysmal. Certain other things about a Disney cruise just don't work for us as a family. I was considering a 3 night on the Dream in November (we have a placeholder) but I think our upcoming Fantasy cruise just may be our last Disney cruise. I'd prefer going to WDW and cruising other lines.

What's crazy for me is I want to try Celebrity and I am not really that old, lower 40s, and on my 5 night 40th birthday cruise on the magic did the aquadunk like 115 times. For some reason their ships and decor look really relaxing. I could hate it of course, but is on my list of lines to try.

I'd love to try Celebrity as well, but I'm slightly older than you, (47). Have you seen the new Celebrity Edge? http://www.celebritycruises.com/edge/

I know people around our age who cruise Celebrity and love it. I think of HAL when I think "old people" way before I think of Celebrity.

I like old people a lot (so much more than younger people). I might like Holland of America.

I also think of old people when I think of HAL. However, having turned 60 last year - I'm now in the "senior" category myself! I was on HAL Eurodam 2 weeks ago in the eastern Caribbean, and there were a lot of families onboard.

I like Celebrity, and the new Edge looks very interesting. But as much as I have enjoyed cruising, I'm trying to refrain from booking more cruises unless the itinerary and price are truly exceptional.

I have seen some pictures but haven't researched it yet. I will check out the link, the pictures I did see looked really cool. We are in a box for a few years needing to do shorter cruises due to a job change, so the bummer so far with Celebrity is they don't have 4 day cruises that sail over a weekend.

I read a trip report on an Alaska cruise someone did on X and became really interested in them, ships are beautiful and service seems to be great. For some reason I'm absolutely in love with the real grass deck on the top of some of their ships. I just haven't been able to sell our teenagers on them yet. I almost had them sold on a Celebrity cruise for June/July 2018, it's a 10 day from Eastern Caribbean from New York, (I think), that actually is docked in the Boston Harbor on 7/4 so we could spend that day in Boston and then see the fireworks from the ship. Unfortunately it's on one of their older ships that just wasn't as pretty as the Soltice or Equinox. The itinerary was absolutely fantastic though.

I think the first cruise my wife and I do without the kids will be on X.
