ABCs of a Nursing School Grad Trip + FL Keys Mini Report;D is for: Dang! Last Chapter of this TR...

But what I didn't know is that at the end of the year, everyone decides to get new... "enhancements", ( we do tons of plastics) and other elective procedures. Deductibles are met and everyone is trying to get that end-of-the-year thing done.

Interesting. I never would have guessed at that, but it does make a weird sort of sense.

Without going into details, I had a very jolting reminder of the gravity of my job; one that made me realize all over again that there is no slacking on this job. I hold people's lives in my hands and decisions and level of attention I give.

:scared1: That doesn't sound like much fun. I'm sure the job can be very sobering.

Remember the 25 people over for Thanksgiving? It was fun!

Hooray! :woohoo:

So fun that I've been elected (read, "Hey, we'll all be over!") for Christmas too.

D'oh! :headache:

She has a minorly strained relationship with her own folks and is getting tired of living with them. I think in some ways they are having a hard time making that mental switch to her being a married woman who's all grown up. She texted me a couple of days ago and asked if she could move in with us here in Oregon until she gets word to go. Of course she can! She's part of our family now; she's my daughter now

This sounds like Christmas Vacation: "Sure, we have plenty of room!"

Add to the mix the holiday season in general and it's really hard to be as engaged here as I normally am. I LOVE to hang out with you all and love the friendly banter and chatter. I love to hear about what's going on in all of your lives so please keep sharing, okay??
I know the feeling, it's a busy time of year! Although it sounds like you have quite a bit going on at home. I've been reading along with your updates when I've had time, but I've not had much of a chance for comments. I've been enjoying my time off at home (you may remember I work a rotation overseas and I got home earlier this month, to spend time with my family until after Christmas). Since I got back my youngest DD had a school concert, oldest DD had a Christmas voice recital, plus general holiday shopping, baking (yes, I enjoy making cookies), and of course decorating. I did one project that I was pretty proud of the way it turned out. I got the idea from another DisDad to make a Mickey Christmas wreath. So after buying three plain wreaths, I spent a few days connecting them together with floral wire, attaching lights and Christmas ornaments (after I glued the tops on, hopefully they will survive our Canadian winter!). And, why yes, I think I will toot my own horn just a little and share a picture :)

IMG_1839.JPG

You'll see from the picture that we've also had a nasty week of weather and I've been shoveling snow nearly every day this week (the picture was taken after the first of the storms, so Mickey is looking a bit frostier now).

Hey, Jeff!

Great to see you here and "home for the holidays". I'm out getting some tech support for the new laptop and as soon as I get home with the new setup, I'll dive into replies. :)

If you gotta wait in line, there isn't a better a way than with another DISer :)

It was great meeting you too-- anticipating the Boo to You finale!
RIGHT?! Always easy to find things to chat about and share. Yes, that's my fun tonight. Hopefully will be getting another update at least started. :)

Sounds like you had a great start to your party. Nice that you got to spend some time with Karilynn. I was confused at first as to where you were going with this update. Glad your interview went well!

It was a perfect start and the fact that I did this early on set us up for a great rest of the evening. Glad I put all that planning into it! You should expect kooky updates from me by now. When I get a little free time on my hands, anything goes. ;)

I don't know why I'm so busy myself, I have nothing going on that should keep me busy, but it just seems that daily chores and such are kicking my butt. Well that and I did go out to Disney last night for dinner and to see the fireworks. Today I can't seem to get my butt put of bed!

Keep at it! Wish I could come and give you guys a hand with the move out/clean out project!

Sounds busy, but mostly good busy! I just finished up a few different little projects at the office, so I figured I could hop on the DIS and maybe even make a more than 1 or 2 sentence reply! Tho I am waiting to hear back from a village official whether or not I have to add anything to a submittal (hopefully it will either be something small, or they will consider that what I've given them is enough to not blow our public hearing deadline). And I have to figure out how to respond to a client who wants to know how long it will take me to do some stuff that I said I didn't know how long it would take and so we would have to bill him hourly. (Since it is yet another situation of trying to make a different set of village officials happy - and they keep finding new reasons not to be happy.)

It is mostly good busy. I just bought paint for my laundry room and that's the project for tomorrow. I'd love for it to be done by Christmas and in time for company.

You are ahead of me... I hop on and can only pretty much read. I need more than 10 minutes at a time to be able to quote and reply properly.

Your work sounds extremely interesting. Are these villages in the States? Where? Is this overseas? Do tell!

Oh, but I also just finished office holiday cards! Yay! Now I just need to seriously start the personal holiday shopping. I've bought something like 3 gifts. Including one for me. (Instant Pot, that a bunch of my friends have been raving about and was on super duper Black Friday sale. For those who don't know, it's a pressure cooker that you don't have to leave on the stove and is mostly automated, and you can cook frozen meat in a really short time for those of us who sometimes forget to defrost anything. And apparently makes awesome cheesecake, tho I'm not much of a baker, so don't know if I'll get around to that)

Yeesh. I've done NOTHING. Literally not one thing. Not one gift. However... this year, we've agreed as a family that we will be diverting most of what we'd have spent on each other and giving it to a ministry that rescues and rehabs young girls out of sex slavery in Indonesia. I'm really excited about it, and should the need arise for a nurse, I'd go and help in a rescue in a heartbeat. Nevertheless, we'll do stockings, and a super nice meal of probably ham and the fixings.

Funny you should mention a kitchen appliance/cookware item. My daughter mentioned our need for a rice cooker, so we'll probably get one at some point. I"ve never used one, but she's been getting to know some Malay friends at OSU and when she last spent the night with them, she said it was amazeballs.

As for thawing out meat... yeah, that's a issue. :sad2:

Also, my dd has been busy with Pokemon tournaments. She's been pestering me to take her all over the place lately. And, apparently, I'm getting a reputation as a pushover mom. On Saturday, one of her friends had a last minute birthday celebration after a tournament. Now, we had been expecting snow all week, and I had mentioned to the dad that I was a little worried about the weather. As far as I was concerned, the most logical step was to turn it into a sleepover. But, not my family, so I didn't suggest it. So, what happens? About 9 pm, I get a text from dd, asking if I could drive over to her friend's house and drop off sleepover stuff (pj's, sleeping bag and change of clothes). I pretty much burst out laughing, and texted back, "Um, no. If I'm driving over there in the dark and snow, I will be bringing you home. Or, you can sleep in your clothes. Let me know." She wisely chose to sleep in her clothes (and they also have a huge guest room). The next morning, the mom commented about how it made so much sense to not have to drive last night in the snow, so I was like, um, I don't think you know about the text dd sent me??? The parents also thought it was pretty hilarious that she had the nerve to ask me to drive there in back in the dark and snow! (For the record, we live about 25 minutes away in good weather). So, yeah, it was dd's friend's idea to ask me. I think she thinks I'm really nice - which I usually am, but not that much of a pushover!

Oh, I"m all too familiar with the Taxi Mom Deal. Now that I"m working, it's less, but still. Can I do this? Can I go there...?

OY! I"m glad your daughter trusts you to be there, but wow. That's a lot to ask. Ours lost her keys a few weeks back and we had to go rescue her an hour away (each way) with the spare set. The things we do... ! :rolleyes2

Have only skimmed the last update. But wanted to give you a little
Sounds like you've got your hands full.

As someone who knows, it's okay to let the DIS go for a bit. Your friends will be here for you when you're ready.

Thanks for the hug! Yeah, it's a wee bit busy and since I have zero self-control I added a little re-model project for the weekend. But wallpapering is fun, and I'll enjoy a fresh new place just in time for company.

The DIS is full of good people, and usually pretty understanding and supportive. Keeps me coming back again and again.

I'll be back later to comment. But loved the costumes!

Looking forward to your reply when you can. I know you're just as busy as I am these days. Hopefully, that vacation is treating you right!

Loved your last (trip) update. Hoping you've had a call back from Doc already. You seemed to have nailed the interview...

Thanks! It was a great little getaway writing it. Hoping to get some time tonight to ponder the next chapter. I haven't heard yet, but after Mark's (@Captain_Oblivious) revelation that it was only cubic zirconium, I'm having 2nd thoughts. My dreams are on the verge of being shattered!

Sounds like a pretty hectic time for you right now. Keeping my fingers crossed that the holidays go smoothly and everything settles into a slower, more steady pace afterwards.

I know it's only a short season and will be over after Christmas, but it sure keeps me on my toes until then. Need to figure out who going to be here when and where all these bodies are going to sleep, and the menu(s) and well, gifts in there someplace as well.

Wow that sounds like a lot going on over there!!! Stress and family and good and bad...but...that's life right? Love the update...your costumes looked awesome. The food...well...gave me some heartburn just thinking about it!! But did look good :))

Life is like that for sure. Times of really busy, but some of this is kinda my own fault. I don't remember if I mentioned or not, but I've also become involved in a venture to bring medical and clean water aid to a country in Africa. I've been busy doing some research on how to stock and set up a mobile van clinic to villages as well as a fixed site clinic. When it'd funded, I'll be going over to provide nursing, teaching and in-country support to the medical workers over there. So fun, but more to fill my time.

You definitely have a full plate. Take care of yourself! See you back soon! Not much to report here. 1 month post-op appointment tomorrow and hoping to put the nail into the cancer coffin. No new trips to report yet - but some unofficial plans are being tossed to and fro.

This is such fabulous news, GB! Truly, I am so happy that this was caught in time, no doubt Providentially. I know you've been on the recovery track and are just now pulling out of it. Just tickled that it looks like all is well again and you can rest a little easier. Pretty much the best Christmas gift ever- one that can't be put under any tree.

Interesting. I never would have guessed at that, but it does make a weird sort of sense.

A lot of course, isn't elective (who wants a kidney stone hanging around for the Holidays?!) but for those who want to cash in on the year end stuff, now's the time.

:scared1: That doesn't sound like much fun. I'm sure the job can be very sobering.

While I'm not scared to death to walk in the door every morning anymore, I do always have the "What could possibly go wrong?" thoughts all day long. The other day, we did actually have a code with an emergency re-intubation which is our worst nightmare with a best outcome. (I wasn't there, but heard all about it, and we've run several mock codes since.)

This sounds like Christmas Vacation: "Sure, we have plenty of room!"

So, kinda like most days around here. I never know WHO'S gonna be here. We have an open door policy and reputation, so it's People Potluck all the time.

I know the feeling, it's a busy time of year! Although it sounds like you have quite a bit going on at home. I've been reading along with your updates when I've had time, but I've not had much of a chance for comments.

That's ok. I haven't commented on a ton of the threads I'm subbed into for weeks really. December is just... hard. Glad you are here as you can be. :)

How long is your home rotation? More than a week, I trust?

Of course I remember that. My turn to tell you some stories/memories. I think you know we lived in Kazakhstan for years. The ONLY other English speakers for HUGE chunks of that time (literally the only ones for 800 miles) were the Canadian oil workers. They were with Hurricane. ( I think they may have been bought out by now?) Anyway, they had a very nice compound of several apartments a dining hall and a small med clinic. We had early on met a few of the guys from the company and we established a good relationship with them. They made sure to let us know that if we had any medical needs, especially emergent ones, to give them a call as they always had an EMT, and paramedic, available. Well, if they weren't in the field.

One day, not too long after we arrived, when Zach was just shy of 2, he was running around with a glass tea bowl and fell slicing his wrist and hand open down pretty deep. He clearly needed stitches. We called up our buddies at Hurricane and they said to bring him on over. The guy on duty wasn't comfortable doing stitching after all, so patched him up and hooked us up with a local x-ray to check for tendon damage. Since there wasn't any, we didn't need to fly him out for hand surgery. After that, I had my dad (he was still practicing medicine at the time) send us some suturing packs over so I could just it myself should another need arise. Of course, being equipped, we didn't need them. But we did use the HUGE amounts of strep throat culture kits that he sent. If you're interested I'll tell you about the time my 6 year old literally gave herself a tonsillectomy with a PVC pipe marshmallow shooter. We almost lost her that day.

So, long story is that we LOVED having the Canadian Oil Workers around. We'd go out for a beer and chuckle at the accent and "eh."

My daughters have volunteered to do all the baking this year, so I'm off the hook this year. It's the decorating that kills me. Being a Type A perfectionist, it's hard to limit myself and put the brakes on. You sound equally as busy. Not in a stressful or bad way, but less time for DISsing and other stuff. Enjoy the Season, Jeff!

And it looks fabulous! Are they fresh wreaths?

You know what? You can toot your own horn any time you like here! I love how it turned out, and you can be pretty darned proud of it!

On my last trip, not this one, 2010, I made a similar wreath out of grapevine wreaths that I hung in my resort window and added white lights. I then hung my wishes for my trip on them as I completed each one.

Just lovely!!!

You'll see from the picture that we've also had a nasty week of weather and I've been shoveling snow nearly every day this week (the picture was taken after the first of the storms, so Mickey is looking a bit frostier now).

Ugh, we've had snow for the week, and more is expected again tomorrow. Not NEARLY as brutal as you guys get, but still a pain. Not enough here to shovel by any means, but since we do get it so infrequently, our infrastructure just isn't set up to deal with it very well. Traffic becomes a freaking nightmare. The other day, they didn't plan well at all, and some kids in the Beaverton District didn't get home on their buses until 11:00 PM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nevertheless, I feel sorry for y'all; you must love it an awful lot to stay!.

Cute House!! Love the Mickey wreath!!

Looks like everyone has the usual Holiday busyness going on. Family Practice seems to be busy, but the phone isn't ringing much with people already busy with holiday prep, so only the necessary calls are coming in, if you know what I mwan. So often, people seem to be bored, just sitting around thinking of random things to call about. "Hey! I google which codes you could bill with, because I know you have never coded anything before..." :rotfl2:

Anyway Liesa, , I am happy to hear you will get a chance to get to know DDIL, and that she will hopefully soon be heading to Guam.

We had our office Christmas party last night, which was a great success! I am officially finished with my Christmas prep:banana: Well, except for packing, because next week at this time, we will be having dinner at Disneyland!

Love it! Your house looks great with the snow, and that Mickey wreath is wonderful!

Thanks again, Jeff for that great pic! It's fun to see another side of friends here.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I love seeing everyone's IRL goings on. Here's "Lincoln Landing"- our 3rd generation home on the Willamette River outside of Salem, OR. And here vv is a view from the backside: (haha! The backside IS water!)

House 2.jpg

Anyone else care to share any winter or Christmas-y photos of their house all decked out? Mine is clearly devoid of ANYTHING. Sad.

She won't be here before Christmas, and is saying maybe sometime afterwards. I'll keep you posted.

GREAT for you! I haven't started yet, really. The tree is up, and a few things are out, like our stockings all hung by the chimney with care. But no menu plans, no gift shopping, etc...

And speaking of DLR...

I have a little announcement coming myself.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

So, the front of our house has a wreath on the door. Boom, I'm done. But, this is the back, all decorated by Mother Nature last week...

Anyone else care to share any winter or Christmas-y photos of their house all decked out? Mine is clearly devoid of ANYTHING. Sad.

I'd love to.... but for reasons that I can't get into, I can't. Sorry!

And no. Haven't forgotten to comment. But I will!

Now that we’re a mere couple of weeks away from Christmas

Ugh... Still have so much to do.... :sad2:

I warn you, this update is not for the weak.

Dun, dun, dun, dunnnnnn!!!!

It is no small undertaking (see what I did there?)

::yes::

to plan the perfect use of this evening!

MNSSHP is not for those with no planning skills.

we milked every excellence out of those $100 tickets (if THAT doesn’t frighten the he!! out of you, I’m not sure much else will)

Agreed. If you're lactose intolerant, milking anything would be scary.

and had an immensely spooktacular time!

Good! :)

Every Halloween Party Goer needs to be well costumed

::yes:: That's half the fun right there.

Naruto (an anime character that my kids adore); Steampunk Alice; and Steppe, RN.

You guys look great!

I may or may not get back to costume talk, so suffice to say, we had SCADS of fun complements and comments.

:goodvibes Makes it all worth it, no?

Long pants! I take it, it wasn't concrete meltingly hot out, then.

What is she holding? Shrinking/growing liquid?

What a great shot! Did you pose her or did you just get lucky and catch her that way?

I carefully chose Casey’s because I thought making sure a heinous case of heartburn would scare the crap out of me for the rest of the evening. It worked. Deep fried, batter-covered hot dogs. Shall I say more? Yes. Yes, I should. An entire order all to myself of deep fried, batter-covered hot dogs on an otherwise empty stomach. Don’t get me wrong. I love Casey’s corndogs more than I love a free one-hour massage, but this time I sure paid for it.

Whoops! Well.... Sounded good there for a second.

mmmmm... those look good!! Why have I not seen these before????
I'm not a huge fan of Casey's hot dogs. The world's best hot dogs are elsewhere. Either a 30 minute up the road from my place or in Minneapolis at the Wienery.

Next time.... gotta get those little puppies.

(Did it conjure up visions of your teacher smacking your hand with it? Really? You were a little naughty then. Shame on you!)

Sister Beatrice. Horrible human being. Almost positive she lived to inflict pain and strike fear in children's hearts. Probably long gone by now. Makes me wonder how many nuns are roasting in hades right now... all being whacked with giant yard sticks.

Now… because it’s not quite as large as that 12-roll case of Quilted Northern that I’m going to need,

:rotfl: Gee! Thanks for sharing that vision with us!

Stand back now and admire Casey’s Foot Long BBQ Pork Dog:

Is that.... a chorus of angels I hear?

Stand in Line.

What???? Who on Earth would pay that kind of money and then just stand in line?!?!?

:rolleyes1

Because, my dear friends, the 7 Dwarves only come out at Halloween. That’s why.

I hear there are other characters that only come out that night, too.
Probably just a rumour.

Before I headed to the Forest, I’d contacted them using my Magic Mirror (every Queen has one)

Yeah but you don't order people's hearts ripped out, do you?

Um........

Have I told you how pretty you looked in your costume? I'm sure you were the fairest one of all the park goers.

there are, apparently, some exceedingly naïve and unsuspecting young girls around who take treats from strangers

It's called trick or treating. Sheesh!

and shack up with a bunch of men.

hi ho

Of course, the fact that they were in the diamond and jewel mining business had nothing to do with my interest in staking a claim in the partnership.

Of course not. You were being 100% altruistic.

I’d have to totally knock their wee leather booties off and really leave a lasting impression!

"wee leather boots". <snicker>

I’d met @Malia78 through the Magic Mirror Consortium

Just to be clear. You had met her earlier? Or you met her in line?

Hang on...

Okay. Went and looked. I see she came out of lurkdom a while back and you guys planned to meet.
Please. Pardon the interruption. Continue.

45 minutes after arriving, I looked behind me to find that several hundred MORE hopeful applicants had joined the line

::yes:: My experience as well.

My stethoscope must have caught his attention and he waved a warm welcome to me.

 You picked the right costume, apparently.

I felt badly for the other applicants at his blithe dismissal of them.

Uh, huh. Sure you did.

Sort of.

Not really.

Thought so.

I found out a bit later that he was having a really bad day as Human Resources Manager;

There was also one with a horrible case of narcolepsy. So sad!

Quick! When he passes out, grab his bucket!

I mean who can resist an Assistant to the Doc Applicant who shows up in scrubs (with the CEOs picture on them!) and a stethoscope and who’s ready to get down to business?

Who indeed?

Totally cute and awesome picture!!

He thought it was a brilliant idea, and told me that he and his team would be getting back to me soon about a start date. I’m very anxious to hear back, and in the meantime I’m gaining valuable experience in Surgical Nursing. I will let you all know when they contact me and the contract is signed.

Good luck with the new job! Any word yet??

I could see immediately that the mine carts were an OSHA nightmare.

After the tour, I was whisked away to their private party den where they entertain beautiful young girls for dancing and sleeping

Uh, huh. Sounds pretty sketchy. Don't take your eyes off your drink.

They give them protection (sort of, they really don’t do a fabulous job) and she does all of their scut work. Heff would be proud… maybe even envious. I doubt there is much apple pie baking going on in his place.

:lmao:

(With eyes like that, she really ought to see someone about her thyroid issues!)

:rolleyes2

Great update Liesa!

Wow you have been superbusy. That's nice letting your DIL move in. How kind.

That is a lot of extra hours lady and lots of guests for Holidays.

Hope you have a good rest soon!
