We Ate, We Drank, We Conquered - An Aug/Sep '16 Dining Report - Complete 3/11

Sorry Kona was a disappointment, that place seems to have serial bad service! It is worth it for breakfast but not for dinner.
Glad you were able to get some corkscrew help :thumbsup2

When we are there in May my mom wants to try the pancakes since we are staying at Poly - but...do they offer take out?? Maybe we can split an order in the room?!? And very glad to know not to feel bad about not looking for a ressie there!

*Sigh* Very typical Kona meal. I keep wanting this place to get better. Our last dinner there was a huge disappointment as well but DS and I did have a pretty good lunch so maybe there is still hope that it will turn around!

Sorry you had a not so good experience at Kona. It's been a few years, but I've had lunch there twice & never had an issue with the service. Maybe it's because both times I was there just as lunch began & it was pretty much empty? The first time I decided to try the Grilled Teriyaki Polynesian Plate Lunch because I wanted steak & was on a budget. Mistake. I guess I got what I should've expected with a $16 steak meal. My friend had the chicken plate lunch which he enjoyed & I thought it was alright. We also ordered wings but asked for the hot wings & they were perfectly cooked & really good. The second time, we just ordered apps for a lighter lunch & I got the Tuna Poke which I don't see on the menu anymore & the pot stickers which were really good. Our server gave us some complimentary Polynesian cookies which I cannot remember what they were called but were delicious! I thought that was very sweet of her since we weren't celebrating anything, she just brought them & asked if we would want them.

I've been wondering if Kona would do an order to go. It would be nice to get an app or two & find a bench on property to hang out & have a quick lunch.

Casey is so cute! And that's awesome that she loves 'slushi'! Lol!

Clearly not everyone got the memo that we were not eating at Cinderella's Royal Table tonight.
Awesome outfit for CRT (or 1900 Park) though!

Once my beer that shall remain pictureless arrived, Jason also got his very masculine drink.
It is a little known fact that "real men" drink with straws from glasses adorned with fruit. :)

In case you couldn't tell Kona was a definite disappointment. While the location was convenient, the service was just plain awful
Too bad it didn't go well. I have not been to Kona but I have to wonder if poor service is a thing at the Polynesian? My only dining experience at the resort was 'Ohana breakfast a couple years ago, but I had a similar inattentive "ghost" waitress.

I have to say, we were pretty underwhelmed with Kona as well. We did breakfast (I know, I know, sorry to the Kona fans!), but I'd had a dinner ADR booked for ages and ended up cancelling because I just had a feeling it wasn't going to be what I wanted it to be. I was glad we *only* dropped $ on breakfast. Sorry Kona, but that was a one and done for us.
We are definitely in the love breakfast camp, but sounds like you were very smart in canceling your dinner ADRs. Since we don't have an upcoming Poly trips in our sights I think we'll be taking a break for a while.

Oh, and our service was lousy and super slow too. Is that like their claim to fame?
Apparently it is. If you are grouchy and want to provide bad service, than Kona is hiring!

Your experience has been what my experience tends to be. The thing that sucks about it was that I used to have a few dishes I really loved before the dumbing down of the menus so I put up with hit. We skip it now because there are so many better options around!
Yeah, I think we are definitely in the skip it camp. The wings were good and some of the sushi had promise, but I just can't get over the "service" and as you said there is so much more to be had.

The sushi looks good but we have made the mistake of ordering that shrimp tempura roll as well and didn't care much for it either. I'm in the "still love Kona" camp but I've always been able to get a second beverage... and my beverage of choice there being the heavenly (and very potent) backscratcher, maybe that changes my opinion :rolleyes1

Sounds like you guys may be done with kona for a while, which is sad, because aren't you pretty much a poly gal? (Wilderness lodge dalliances aside)
Maybe if I had loaded up on the backscratchers (and gotten more than 1 of them) it would have been a better experience too :-)

Casey loves the Poly, but we are definitely a Wilderness lodge family. We just do the Poly once a year when they have great labor day rates. Next trip is AKL though, cause the price was right.

Rude! What kinda gift shop do they think they are?! Good thinking though. I myself tend to keep a wine key in my suitcase for "emergencies"... learned my lesson after I found myself in Rome (Italy not Georgia) with no way to open a bottle of 5 euro wine I'd picked up on my last night before flying back to the states - had to call down to the desk to ask if they had a wine key and they sent up a very nice gentleman to OPEN IT FOR ME :scared1: and to my horror when we removed the foil the cork was plastic and BLUE! He had a good laugh at my expense but I enjoyed my Italian wine nevertheless. Not that my wine sensibilities are much improved, I'm still buying $10 wine from Trader Joe's which isn't far off from the price of the blue cork special given the exchange rate at the time :rotfl:
:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: Love that story, though after you get back from Sonoma your wine taste may change. I remember we'd bought some cheap stuff while we were out there just so we didn't go through as much of the good stuff. Unforutnately the taste difference was just too much and I was never able to go back. RIP Yellowtail.

Thanks for the update. Now I have learned that I probably don't ever want to do Kona dinner. Not that I had it on my list anyway (so many more I would like to try) but it is nice to read a review just to file away.
Kona breakfast is awesome, but you can skip dinner in favor of pretty much everything else out there!

I had a wine key on my packing list for this past June but I forgot it! However, we were in a 1 bedroom villa at SSR and they had one. Nice! I wonder if the studios at WL have them. I just need to remember it next trip!
I think we had one in our one bedroom a VWL so they likely have them there, just not in the regular rooms. We used to have one we traveled with but TSA took it a few years ago. Not sure what their regulations are these days

Yeah, it is clearly a known issue but I'm not sure why they don't do anything about it!!!

When we are there in May my mom wants to try the pancakes since we are staying at Poly - but...do they offer take out?? Maybe we can split an order in the room?!? And very glad to know not to feel bad about not looking for a ressie there!
Sorry I don't know about take-out, but my guess would be no. They do serve the tonga toast at Captain Cooks, but not the pancakes. Maybe you could get them from room service though????

Sigh is an understatement. It has so much promise yet just keeps failing on both food and service. Think we'll be staying away for a while.

Maybe lunch is the key then ; ) Breakfast service has always been bad, but the food is just so good I can overlook it. But at dinner couple the bad service, with the bad food, and its just sad. Maybe we should have stuck to the appetizers and we would have been ok. Though no chance our server was giving us anything!!!!

Yeah, we are so lucky that Casey is such a good eater. I still don't think she knows slushi is actually raw seafood, but even if she did figure it out she's too hooked to care.

Awesome outfit for CRT (or 1900 Park) though!
Yeah, she definitely did not get the Polynesian memo tonight!

It is a little known fact that "real men" drink with straws from glasses adorned with fruit. :)
Apparently it is very little known, so little no one actually knows :-)

Too bad it didn't go well. I have not been to Kona but I have to wonder if poor service is a thing at the Polynesian? My only dining experience at the resort was 'Ohana breakfast a couple years ago, but I had a similar inattentive "ghost" waitress.
We had good service at Trader Sam's and the hotel cast members are great, but Kona definitely does not fall in the same vein

Fighting the Force

We were up bright and early and to MGM the next morning before the park opened. This was a first for us, but we had a little girl who wanted to get her jedi on. We booked it into the park (as we were passed by people who clearly didn't hear the no running announcements from the cast members) and had no issue signing up for the 11 am Jedi Academy show.

Before the big training event, we first got in the military mood....

...And met a couple of toys....

....Before playing some carnival games and taking a spin on the shooting lady ride. By now our bellies were rumbling a bit so we stopped by Starring Rolls for some breakfast provisions.

I went with the very healthy cheese danish

This was fresh, cheesy, and delicious and hit the early morning sugary spot.

Casey took a cue from me and also went the healthy direction.

At least one of us had some nutritious breakfast juju, as Jason went with a bagel and (gasp) some fruit.

Bellies satisfied, it was time to battle the dark side. Here's a look at my little Jedi in action.

Overall this was a great experience. We were bummed that Casey got to fight the random Star Wars lady instead of this guy

But she didn't care. She was in Jedi Heaven and didn't care who she got to battle, as long as she had a light saber. My only complain is this is uncovered so at 11am on a day with high humidity and temperatures in the mid-90's it was brutal. Couple that with the kids wearing the robes and it was H-O-T!!! I can only fathom what the afternoon kids had to deal with.

Up next, we travel from the future to the past

OMG I don't think I realized this TR was going on...or it's been so long since I've looked around lol. Anyway...glad to be here to hear about some more food...love your reports. And awesome breakfast of champions lol

Back to the Future

After the academy it was time for our lunch ADR at 50's Prime Time. I hadn't eaten here in almost 20 years so a return trip was long overdue. It took me a few trips to get Jason away from SciFi and to 50's but finally my time had come.

We were seated quickly, but in a continuation of our theme were seated in the back of the restaurant by the emergency exit.

Clearly the restaurant was very busy so this is the best they had available.:-)

Despite our seat, our server (Marnie) was amazing, and one of the best we had all week. Of course she was helped by a great understudy.

Here is Casey doing her best bartender impression and serving Jason's Jai Lai. I kept it a bit more casual and just went with a Yuengling.

While we enjoyed our drinks and waiting on our eats, Marnie kept us busy trying to come up with 20 disney movies with only 1 name. It was tough, but we eventually did it.

Soon our food arrived. In an odd turn of events Jason and I were sharing this time instead of Casey and I. To start with we got Cousin Amy's Iceberg Lettuce Wedge with
Blue Cheese Dressing, Bacon, and Chives.

I'm not usually an iceberg lettuce fan, but this was very good and refreshing on such a hot day.

For our entree we split Aunt Liz's Golden Fried Chicken.

This is served with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Chicken Gravy, and Corn and as you can see is absolutely HUGE. I'm so glad we shared it as we had no idea there would be 4 pieces of chicken!!! Speaking of chicken, this was delicious!!! I ate the breast and it was exceedingly crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside with some great spices in the breading. I'd go out on a limb and say this was some of the best fried chicken we'd ever had. Certainly the best at Disney as it blew Hoop Dee Doo away. The potatoes were good too, though nothing special, and as I don't like corn on the cob (long story that involves my mother making us eat it everyday one summer) I ended up trading Casey for some of her veggies.

Speaking of which, here is a look at Casey's meal.

This is Grandma'a Mac n Cheee, though I must say it looked more like Aunt Kraft's version :P She seemed to enjoy it, though she was more enamored with the sprite we let her have for the first time ever. Her meal came with dessert, but she was full so we got some grapes to go instead.

Overall, this was a great 50's experience. Service was awesome (and needed after our Kona nightmare), the food delicious, and the environment a ton of fun. Marnie didn't give us too much grief, but I got called on the carpet on more than a few occasions for having my elbows on the table. Casey of course thought this was hysterical. With our tables in wonderland card we saved $10.40, leaving us just $65 till we break even.

Up next, we really couldn't skip dessert....

Cupcakes to the Rescue

After lunch we hung out with a couple of muppets, channeled some more force with a great tour of the stars, before meeting this "cool" dude for the first time.

Casey loves all characters, but she was totally mesmerized and smitten with Olaf in a way we'd never seen before.

After that we took one more trip on Casey's beloved shooting lady ride and this time got the Cowboy scene for the first time in years!!!! Great treat.

We headed out after that and tried to catch the bus to the Poly, but we waited, and waited, and waited some more. After close to 30 minutes and a storm setting in, we ended up catching an empty bus to the Contemporary instead.

Someone took the opportunity to sit (aka sleep) by themselves.

On the way to the contemporary I remembered all the good things I'd ready about Contempo Cafe's cupcakes, so since we were right there of course we had to stop.

Casey went with the Frost Cupcake, which was Chocolate Cake infused with Caramel and topped with Sweet Butter Cream.

This actually had butter cream on the inside too, which was way too much icing for my liking. But Casey was in sweet heaven!

Jason and I elected to share the Banana Flip which is a Vanilla Cupcake, with Banana Cream Filling and Banana Buttercream Icing.

This was cupcake perfection. Delicious real butter cream icing, caramel chips, and a banana pudding like filling that was divine. These were unquestionably the best cupcakes in the world. My only complaint (cause I gotta have one) is they are kept in the refrigerated section so they were cold and would have been better room temperature.

Our cupcake diversion made up for our bus woes and after a quick monorail ride we found ourselves back at the Poly just in time to get ready for dinner.

Up next, we channel our inner carnivores

Lots o' updates! Love the Jedi Training! We attempted in June but got rained out. We will attempt again next June.

I know that we have always talked about 50's but I'm not sure we ever did it. I know we did SciFi previously. I'd like to try it again, but I haven't heard the best about 50's service. Glad that wasn't the case for you!

You have to stop giving me ideas for our next trip! And yes, I'm talking about the cupcakes at the Contemporary. We will be right there at WL but I cannot keep adding stuff to our schedule...lol. ;)

Wow so many updates, love it. We have had breakfast once at Kona and it was very good and we had a good waiter, very rare I see! We plan to stay at the Poly late August next year so we were going to try Kona again, now not so sure. The cheese danish and cupcakes look so good right now, I am having a sweet craving! We also loved our meal at 50's in August. We shared the sampler and I agree the chicken is awesome! Casey looks like she had a great day at MGM, so cute!

I'm with your daughter on the cupcake with lots of icing on it!

Glad you had decent meals this day - especially at Prime Time! That fried chicken platter is not something to be taken alone!

That cupcake...wow. I want to try that one! I love banana pudding. Contempo does have really good cupcakes and pretty good food as well!

Apparently it is very little known, so little no one actually knows :-)
Oh well, I guess just Jason and I got that memo! :p

This was a first for us, but we had a little girl who wanted to get her jedi on.
Very cool that you have a girl who wants to be a Jedi. I have not been able to get either of my girls (including DW) to even watch a single Star Wars movie. The farthest I got was DD thinking BB8 and R2D2 were cute. :(

I went with the very healthy cheese danish
Casey took a cue from me and also went the healthy direction.
Perfectly acceptable for a vacation diet. Just like if, hypothetically speaking, someone was at Universal and just happened to have a Butterbeer and chocolate cauldron cake for breakfast. Purely an example pulled off the top of my head of course. I'm sure nothing like that would ever actually happen. :o

Overall this was a great experience. We were bummed that Casey got to fight the random Star Wars lady instead of this guy
Yeah, Vader would be better. They have tried to make the Seventh Sister the latest baddie, but I don't think it's have much impact. (Yes, in addition to admitting to drinking fruity drinks with straws, I also admit to watching a cartoon show aimed at 10 year old boys.) At least Casey enjoyed it.

Marnie kept us busy trying to come up with 20 disney movies with only 1 name. It was tough, but we eventually did it.
OK, now I have to accept that challenge! I'll see what I can come up with.

This is served with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Chicken Gravy, and Corn and as you can see is absolutely HUGE. I'm so glad we shared it as we had no idea there would be 4 pieces of chicken!!! Speaking of chicken, this was delicious!!!
It is very good chicken. I've had the sampler on my last two trips there, so I had one piece of chicken plus pot roast and meatloaf. All very good.

This actually had butter cream on the inside too, which was way too much icing for my liking. But Casey was in sweet heaven!
Sweet heaven. Yep, that's me. It's sounds like a good place.

My only complaint (cause I gotta have one) is they are kept in the refrigerated section so they were cold and would have been better room temperature.
I can see that. I think I would prefer room temperature cupcakes too.
