Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

Great updates! I'm always amazed buy how much you enjoy your day skipping quite a few of the rides. I totally understand, though. The atmosphere at the parks is just so dang cool and it's also fun to see your loved ones enjoying themselves. I'm looking forward to hearing your dining review!

Wow that's even emptier than it was in September!

That's hilarious I guess that's where everyone was haha :D

My boyfriend is the same way with those games if he doesn't win he has to try again later, this trip he's determined to get it. He did win at the Renaissance Fair though so I guess that softens the blow.

Other than the Harry Potter areas, the parks were pretty light. Perhaps a lot of folks were waiting to visit until Kong and Hulk were both open to guests? Honestly, I think the opening of Kong and re-opening of Hulk will make a huge difference on the Hogsmeade crowds (which, regardless of the day or time, almost always seem bad).

Minion City!

They are officially taking over:

You'll need a trophy room soon :rotfl:

My rec room is our official Minions Central. We had friends over last Saturday night, and when they came downstairs to watch the Raptors game, they looked around and said.....You would never know that this is a house with no kids. :o
Yay for low crowds (mostly!) and new Minions to add to your collection! :cool1: Great job, Steve and Jake! :thumbsup2

Thank you! They were pretty happy with themselves :).

Loving the updates! And how cute are those two with their tough guy faces holding up their Minion stuffies?:rotfl:

Those two meat heads were hilarious. They proudly carried those silly minions all around the park. I offered to take them off their hands on multiple occasions but they were quite content to hold on to them themselves :p.

We do tour the parks differently than most people, I would suspect. Rides are important, for sure, but we enjoy so many of the non-ride aspects too. It also helps that we have done virtually everything in the parks at one time or another......there's no panic to try and do it all when we've done nearly all of it already. We do love just soaking up that awesome atmosphere, taking in all the little things, and enjoying the parks without a schedule, without a touring plan, and without stress!!

Looks like you guys were having a blast. Those big pink donuts look good.

I wish now I had picked one up to freeze until our departure day, and take home to enjoy once we were back to reality. It was a good idea just a little too late.

Crominion is so cute!

I'm pretty sure the Simpsons ride is the same as Back to the Future. I could picture the scenes from BTTF as we rode.

Interesting :scratchin. I figured one of you good people would know!

I wonder why Simpsons is so much harder on most folks, then?

So where do the the Minions move to when you need to use the fireplace or are they the star of the basement and the fireplace doesn't get used?
Judy

Good luck on the race, my friend! Bring lots of water, it sounds like its going to be a hot weekend for running. Assuming, of course, you are getting the hot and muggy weather that we are a couple of hours south of you. I had to cave and put my central air conditioning on yesterday.....in MAY!! :crazy2:
Thanks for the good wishes Gina. "I survived" would be the best way to put it. It was an odd event. Not the first time I have done Ottawa Race Weekend, and I think the organizers hearts were in the right place, but their heads weren't really in it. They rescheduled most of the events around the heat of the day, but left the 5k (largest race) with a 4:00 pm start. Since I'm not an elite runner, this means our corral actually started at about 4:25. But you need to be there a bit before start time, standing around in the hot sun on a downtown street. So we were half baked already when we crossed the start line. At about the 1K mark we hit Wellington St which had been freshly paved the previous week. Hot, fresh, stinky, black pavement. Felt like out shoes were melting. And the organizers were warning everyone to stay well hydrated. Great idea. No water available on the course until the 4K mark; saw a medical van being mobbed for its water supply at around the 3K mark. I am not kidding! Looked like a scene from a refugee camp.

Personally, I only ran for about 12 minutes and power walked the rest. Normally I would run the full length. Was originally expecting a 35 minute finish; I managed 44:15 and was whipped. I was so hot I thought my head would explode. DS is an elite runner and was targeting a sub 20 minute time. Stopped to vomit 3 times from the heat, but still managed a 23 minute finish and 17th overall in his age group. (And you think YOUR guys are competitive!) The overall winner was from his track and field club at a bit more than 15 minutes.

Probably one of the toughest physical activities I have completed; I started to think I might even be slower than my best 10K time! But at the finish line there was lots of camaraderie as we all felt almost like survivors! And it is worthwhile as our team managed to raise almost $25,000 for Huntington Disease this weekend.

My other major accomplishment of today was to get all caught up on your trip report! Please proceed! I love seeing and reading about all these reminders of some of my happiest places!

I am glad to finally see the procurement of the new minions:)

Yes , the Simpsons ride is physically the same as the old Back to the Future ride....just the ride movements and the screen simulations now are killer on the stomach.

I'm here! Better late than never, right?

Not gonna lie, only read your trip posts.

A) Yay for learning new things about dolphins! I'm full of random facts about those stinkers!

B) The fountains don't run at just random times. (I mean, I think they run more than this...) but I know they do run every hour on the hour. :)

C) Red Robin....YUmmmm. I love those steak fries so much. And as far as that photo about when calroies don't count....if that's the case, I should weigh like 60lbs based on all those requirements. Between vacations, weekends, and breakups this last year, I shouldn't weigh the same now as I did a year ago ;) But I sure wished it worked that way!

What camera are you using? Your shots have a nice quality to them, Gina!

It's an older point-and-shoot that we purchased for one of our trips in ... 2012, maybe? Perhaps 2013?

It is a Fuji Finepix S4400:

BLK-S4400-FB-R-unit.jpg

Mine is burgundy in colour but otherwise its the same camera as that photo.

It's not a $1000 camera by any stretch, but it is a good balance between being decent quality but not so valuable that I'd be devastated if it was dropped, stolen, or otherwise during one of our trips. I can't imagine carrying around super-expensive camera equipment on vacation when it often gets bounced around during our travels or as we enjoy the parks. I have long since lost the lens cap (its somewhere at SeaWorld LOL!) and its even survived a good kicking by a Brazilian tourist in the Poseidon's Fury queue, but it keeps on kicking. I have had my eye on a few newer point-and-shoots....there's a nice Canon with a very powerful zoom that has captured my attention!!....but for now, this one does the job :goodvibes.

Your Minion City is very cute!!:)

Thank you! They are definitely a good conversation piece when friends drop over for a visit :p.

It's probably just because the ride system is so old. It's like Body Wars that was in Epcot. That ride was so jerky and seemed to make my family (grandparents, parents ect. ) nauseous when we rode it.

I was so happy when they opened the Twirl 'n Hurl in the new Springfield. I always felt I was missing out by not being able to ride the Simpsons ride, but the Twirl 'n Hurl is just my thrill level . Duncan and I could be ride pals!

So where do the the Minions move to when you need to use the fireplace or are they the star of the basement and the fireplace doesn't get used?
Judy

We definitely use the fireplace in the winter.....its a necessity for us Canadians :cold:. We converted our fireplace from wood burning to a (much cleaner and easier to use) insert when we purchased the house (how nice is it to "start a fire" with a remote? :teeth:) so we just have to move the three or four that are in front of the doors, open 'em up, and enjoy the heat. Our rec room is pretty big so we can just toss them in a corner and still have lots of space.

You are a riot with your Minion collection, I love it!

They're my babies . Each one of them a special memory!

Oh, yikes .... that was a tough race day indeed. You guys did extremely well considering the heat, especially your poor DS. Congrats to you all for such an impressive amount raised for Huntington Disease research. You have to be exceptionally proud of that total....kind of makes all the struggles of the race itself all worthwhile. And what a wonderful testament to your sister's memory.

I am glad to finally see the procurement of the new minions:)

Yes , the Simpsons ride is physically the same as the old Back to the Future ride....just the ride movements and the screen simulations now are killer on the stomach.

There are more stuffie pics yet to come: the minions are just a part of the collection. Stay tuned ;).

Well look who finally showed up!! I am so glad you're here, I was missing your company and wondered if I was losing my touch :goodvibes.

Good to know about the fountains....I need to keep my eyes peeled more, quite obviously. I almost wish they ran them continuously, because they are just so darn pretty to watch.

As for calories: I am trying (as I drift kicking and screaming into "middle age") to find a happy balance between indulgence and healthy living. I think there's room for both in this crazy life we all live. I think, my friend, you are simply beautiful the way you are (and I can only wish I had your figure.....I am still trying to lose my "mommy tummy" 20 years later :rotfl:). Once I hit my 40's, I decided to make other attributes my focus: this quote was a wonderful inspiration for that....

Of course, if God decides at some point he'd like to speed up my metabolism and finally make me thin, I'd be totally okay with that too :teeth:.

My apologies, friends…..I have been lax on updates this past weekend. It was gloriously hot and sunny up here in the north :worship:, and as all my Canadian friends are aware, you sometimes have to seize the day where weather is concerned. Our summer season is a short one so there’s no time to waste a second of it….and yesterday, especially, was spent just enjoying the outdoors and one-on-one time with the people I love.

I will try and get some progress made this week, though. Onward we go! :goodvibes

Tuesday, April 26th: Universal, continued

Thunder Falls Terrace generally gets a lot of love on the Universal boards as far as value and quantity go, yet for some reason we’d never had the chance to give it a try on any of our previous visits. We had pre-purchased the Quick Service dining plan for this day prior to our trip (which was smart, as the cost had risen from the $19.99 per person we paid to $21.99 by the time our travel date rolled around), and wanted to maximize the value of our entitlements under the plan: one entrée with a beverage, plus an additional beverage and snack. Since we were conveniently in IOA on an otherwise Universal Studios day, it seemed like a good time to scratch this location off our dining wish-list.

It was busy inside, and there was a decent line at the counter (though both sides of the food line were open and serving guests). We were all impressed with the décor of the interior: it was quite pretty indeed, and many of the tables had a lovely view of the Jurassic Park River Adventure boats splashing down from the big drop.

Unfortunately, what was a quick stop for lunch turned out to be much longer than we had hoped or expected :headache:. The cashier at the till (who was awesome…..no issues there) was having a frustratingly long delay with her computer system each time she rang through an order where the method of payment was the quick service dining cards: and of course, literally EVERYONE (and that’s no exaggeration…..every single person in front of us, at least 20 people if not more!) was paying with dining plan entitlements. Then there was a loud, obnoxious family who spoke little English and was dissatisfied with EVERYTHING they were given: their milkshakes didn’t pass inspection, make another one. They weren’t given enough potatoes, add another scoop. Their corn wasn’t hot enough, I want another piece. I didn’t want cheese on my burger, give me another one. Whoops, changed my mind….I do want cheese. And on and on it went . While we stood there....and stood there....and stood there....a woman pushing another lady in a wheelchair was directly behind Steve in line, and continued to push that wheelchair into the bag of his heels until I thought he was going to turn around and beat her senseless with his minion. The poor guy had marks on his ankles from the half hour or more of needless ramming (did she think that was going to make US go faster?? :confused3). At any rate, we finally got through and situated at a table, but were definitely questioning our choice of restaurant by the time we sat down.

For entrees, I had picked the half chicken platter with potatoes and grilled corn on the cob:

Jake, our resident burger lover, had a bacon cheeseburger and fries:

Steve opted for the ribs and chicken platter with a double portion of potatoes (he wasn’t feeling corn on the cob, and his meal came with two sides….so they happily doubled his potatoes instead). My apologies for the blurry picture but it’s the only one we got :guilty::

It is hard to fairly grade this meal, to be honest. Everything had a good taste and portions were generous. The staff were very friendly and apologetic (and had taken an incredible amount of unnecessary abuse from that offensive family in front of us) but we had been about 40 minutes in line…..much too long for quick service. Unfortunately, with the delays that we encountered in paying for our meal, our food definitely wasn’t the hottest by the time we actually sat to eat, which was a bit of a bummer too. It wasn’t a total bust by any stretch….we all had lots to eat and definitely left full…. bu I think that a different day could potentially leave us with a much better overall impression. We will have to give this one a second go on a future visit ::yes::.

After lunch, we decided it was time to head back to the Studios for the balance of our day. We headed back through Jurassic Park and Hogsmeade to catch the Hogwarts Express to Diagon Alley, with our two minion friends firmly in tow.

There were many people heading into the queue at Hogsmeade Station….we feared our crowd-free ride there might not be repeated on the way back.

Unfortunately, we were right. Why on earth were there so many people in IOA??? At any rate, we didn’t even get under cover and out of the sun before we were stopped in the line. This was going to take a while.

The queue was full and it took us probably at least 25 minutes before we were boarding the train. This time we had a completely full car of 8, and the minions had to be stowed on the rack above the seats just to accommodate the riders :crowded:.

It felt good to exit Kings Cross station and be back in the crowd-free Studios! :thumbsup2

The guys were up for a ride on the Mummy, so that’s the direction we headed first. Our timing was once again excellent, and The Mummy himself was outside the ride with absolutely no one around him :cheer2::goodvibes. As we approached, he took a very silent but intent interest in the guys’ minions.

This was a super cool encounter all the way around, because we had never had the chance to meet this particular Universal character before. Even after all these visits, it was awesome to be able to still be doing new things and having new in-park experiences :goodvibes.

I took over babysitting duties of the minions while the guys rode the Mummy, which was only a 10 minute wait even at that mid-day point. There may have even been a selfie taken while the minions and I lounged in the sun on a park bench in New York :cool2::

13076849_10154654549031416_4235020209542503229_n.jpg

The boys were back before I knew it, and I captured a tough guy coaster pose for the photo book. They had forgotten to get their ride picture with our Photoconnect card, and were feeling too lazy to go back and see if they could still add it to our account .

The Blues Brothers show has just started a few moments before they emerged from the Mummy, so we stopped to watch them for a little bit. They were surprisingly good!! But holy moly, they must have been roasting in those black suits :faint:.

Steve wanted a picture with the Blues Brothers car, and with hardly anyone else around, this was the perfect opportunity.

After we had our fill of entertainment from the Blues Brothers, we started walking in the general direction of the park entrance and happened upon another character we have never had the opportunity to meet before: Beetlejuice!

Again, the interaction here was SUPERB. Beetlejuice was a real hoot and Steve, in particular, was completely impressed with this chance meeting. We love it when a character meet is so much more than just a “hi, take a picture, and move on” type interaction. It’s awesome when you can walk right up to them without waiting in a huge line or needing a Fastpass and have this kind of a personal and memorable encounter. Universal rocks in this regard!! :cool1:

After leaving Beetlejuice, we opted to hit up a ride on ET (my favourite ride!) and then probably call it a day. Our feet were starting to get sore, we were all feeling the effects of the sun, and our early-ish morning was starting to catch up with us.

What a good idea that plan turned out to be :teeth:.

Just as we rounded the corner into Hollywood, we happened upon Popeye and Olive Oyl….and oh, what fun that meeting was!

Olive Oyl was immediately all over Steve, proclaiming with a squeel that she thought he looked just like Bluto. She grabbed onto his arm and never let go: she showered him with kisses on his cheek :love2: and Popeye, of course, was quick to show his displeasure .

Popeye decided he would have to take the matter into his own hands, and even challenged Steve to a good, old-fashioned fist fight:

In the end, we all decided to part as friends: Popeye with Olive Oyl on his arm, and Steve with me on his. All of a sudden, our weary feet and the searing heat didn’t seem so bad: we had met yet ANOTHER character for the first time (Olive Oyl….Popeye we had happened upon once before on a previous visit) and the experience could not have been more memorable. We were so glad we had chosen to take this route to ET :thumbsup2.

That sentiment was about to be echoed several more times very, very soon: even before we had the chance to put away the camera.

The balance of our Universal day is next.

Loved your update! I can feel Steve's pain (literally) of having the person behind him bumping their wheelchair into his heels (just visited Disneyland last week and same thing happened there in line for food). A man was pushing a lady and almost knocked us down trying to get in line ahead of us. Fortunately (or maybe not) my son reached the line before them by at least a couple of minutes so as we stood in line, either me or my other son got the wheelchair-in-the-heel treatment. I offered for them to go ahead of us but they only glared at us then kept bumping the chair into our heels. Finally my other son turned around completely, didn't stare at them but just looked in their general direction which ultimately stopped the pain continuing lol.

Anyway back to your TR :) Loved the pics with the Mummy and esp Popeye and Olive Oyl - what a fun character interaction! Love new experiences :dancer:

Ugh, I am sorry it happened to you as well. Don't get me wrong....I know accidents can happen with tight spaces and wheelchairs....but having it happen again, and again, and AGAIN without so much as an apology is completely unnecessary. Had it been ME pushing the wheelchair, I would have offered up a very sincere "I'm sorry!" and left a little extra space to ensure I didn't bump someone a second time. But, maybe I'm weird? (don't answer that, LOL! :rolleyes1)

Just looking back at our photos of that meet and greet make me smile. Those are the kind of fun memories that you carry with you forever!!

Tuesday, April 26th: the balance of our Universal day

We had barely gone much more than a few steps before we realized we may have hit the character jackpot :woohoo:: just down from where we chatted with Popeye and Olive Oyl, on the opposite side of the street, were Shaggy and Velma!

Velma immediately gravitated to me, while Shaggy chatted up the guys. Completely in character, completely entertaining :thumbsup2….so much so, I almost forgot to get a group picture until the wonderful Universal TM asked, did you want me to take your camera and get a family shot?

Heck, yeah!

It’s worth noting…..Velma was yet another new character for us, to add to the day’s ever-growing list of first-time meets. We had already more than exceeded my character expectations for this trip, and we weren’t even yet finished day one of our three Universal park days. Awesome ::yes::.

A little more down the street, just past Schwab’s Pharmacy, Dora and Diego were greeting guests….and again, we walked right up to them with absolutely no wait.

Jake opted to take the picture rather than jump in with mom and dad, claiming his college friends would find nothing cool about a photo with Dora the Explorer :rolleyes2. His loss!! LOL

Just as we were finishing up with Dora and Diego, we heard the familiar refrains of “I Want Candy” fill the air, and within seconds an energetic crew of dancers and characters emerged from the backstage area next to Café La Bamba.

I love these little mini-parades that seemingly burst out of nowhere. After a short session of dancing and entertainment for the tiny crowd, the music continued while the characters all welcomed guests for meet-and-greets and photo ops.

Eventually, we finally made our way to my beloved ET. Wait times were far less than the posted 10 minutes, and I barely had time to stow my camera in the case before we were ushered inside. The ride is definitely far below Jake and Steve’s thrill level, but we all got a smile from this Universal classic. I mean really, who doesn’t like ET?

13165991_10154675619456416_9073877800912039627_n.jpg

As we exited the ride, we took the time for Photoconnect pictures in ET’s Toy Closet. Jake was also a good sport and hopped on the bike for a picture he knew mom would treasure :goodvibes.

13125011_10154675619371416_4870586182892761297_n.jpg

Now REALLY hot and REALLY tired, we decided we had accomplished enough for this first Universal day, and opted to pack it in very shortly. Steve only had one more thing he wanted to do, and that was to see if his talents from the sledge hammer game at IOA could carry over to the Studios: earlier in the day, a particular prize had caught his eye at the Sledgehomer game and he was determined it, too, would be coming home with us that afternoon. Before dragging our weary bodies from the park, we would make one final stop.

As we approached his kiosk, the very loud and colourful fellow who was running the Slegehomer game was having a delightful time laughing at people as they missed the coveted “100” mark and left empty handed. As we approached, we watched three fellow Canucks take their three swings at glory, only to be (good-humouredly?) mocked by the game attendant and become the butt of three different….but equally groan-able….jokes about Canadians. Steve whipped out his wallet, stating with a wink: someone needs to shut this guy up :smooth:.

There were no Canadian jokes this time!! :teeth: Radioactive Man was Steve’s prize of choice, all 3+ feet of him: how the heck were we going to get this thing home?

Heading in the direction of the exit, our pilgrimage to the car was interrupted only once more: but in my defense, this opportunity was impossible to resist! By sheer good luck and fantastic timing, the Despicable Me characters were now outside of Mel’s Diner and we had the good fortune to meet all three of Gru’s girls: Margo, Edith and Agnes!! :jumping1:

They were super excited to see our minions and we were beyond thrilled to see them!! Another three first-time characters for us to add to today’s amazing list (not mentioned earlier, but Diego can also be counted among the first time meets as well....good heavens, they had really stacked up that afternoon).

Oh, what a day it had been :cloud9:.

A golf cart to whisk us back to the car would have been just the most amazing thing ever, but alas…..we shuffled our exhausted legs slowly back to the garage, complete with moans and groans all around :o.

Back at the villa, we put the day’s haul on the side table in the dining room, and mused aloud: how much luggage space did we say we had? :rolleyes2

This might be a problem .

Dinner at Steak & Shake, and the conclusion of our Tuesday (yes, finally!) is next.

You are going to need an extra plane ticket for all the new friends and the rest that are sure to be coming home with you as well.:teleport:

The queue was full and it took us probably at least 25 minutes before we were boarding the train. This time we had a completely full car of 8, and the minions had to be stowed on the rack above the seats just to accommodate the riders :crowded:.

How could these people expect the stuffies to be "stowed"?? Do they not know that they are part of the Bo-Bina family?? :D:D

Popeye decided he would have to take the matter into his own hands, and even challenged Steve to a good, old-fashioned fist fight:

Those pictures are adorable.
