Motion sickness in kids, after it starts

Hi everyone! I know motion sickness questions have been asked a million times before, but I have a specific question. We try to prevent (dramamine, etc.) motion sickness in our kids (two girls, ages 8 and 6), but without fail, they still often get bad motion sickness on many rides and even sometimes on the monorails or Friendship boats. What do you do with them after they start feeling sick? They hate to cut their day short, but I don't want to drag them around the park in the hot sun when they're not feeling well! Do you have any tips or tricks for places to rest or ways to settle their stomachs after a rough ride?

Thank you!

If you are in a park, you can go to the First Aid station. I'm sure they are experts at dealing with motion sickness in guests.

As a lifelong sufferer of motion sickness it's rare that anything in the parks triggers me much further past the end of the ride. Occasionally, I need a few moments to just sit and breath. But if they were to have a lingering effect I agree I'd go to the first aid station and have them rest.

I have a kiddo (as well as myself) who has always dealt with motion sickness. The rides don't seem to bother her any longer, however cars and the buses at Disney are the worst! Especially because she cannot always see out the front window. We personally use essential oils and they have worked great. Something to look into and research. There are several articles and websites you will find if you search "motion sickness and essential oils". For us we use Peppermint Oil and my favorite is Digestzen from Doterra.

Take some paper towels or a washcloth, wet in cold water (colder the better) and apply to the back of the neck. I've fed him pieces of candied ginger. He's not a fan but they do seem to help him so he eats them. I'm thinking of trying sea bands for him next visit to see if that helps too. Sometimes a sip of cold coke can help me. Agree with the sitting, preferably in a cool calm place.

You might want to choose to drive to the parks rather than take buses. Crowded bus, looking out sideways sometimes, crowds and maybe standing up equals disaster! Try to know their triggers and if they choose to ride them, do it toward the end of the day. Eat lightly but never let stomach get empty. Ginger snaps work well for my DS and ginger ale or coke to sip. If its hot, try to find a cool off place; first aid or a indoor CS place or maybe even an indoor show if you are pretty sure they won't throw up. If you think they might get sick, please get them to the rest room and then back to your car. I have heard way too many parents tell their kids, " you are NOT going to be sick." Yep they are and sometime on a ride or on another guest. Hugs for a good trip. DS was terrible about motion sickness when he was little. There are more choices now, maybe talk to the doctor and see if there is a better preventive method.

Oh, consider renting a double stroller...if they are feeling bad, they have somewhere to crash and chill till they feel better.

Our family trick for helping motion sickness/nausea subside is to take small sips of Coca Cola. We carry a small individual bottle in our backpack for this reason. Fountain Coke helps too but I've found the bottled version to work better. I've also found that eating something salty or greasy - potato chips are my go to - works well.

I second the ginger. The brand Ginger People makes lots of different "candies" ranging from chews to pure crystalized chunks (they also do soda). My kids & I are very sensitive to motion sickness & ginger always helps us recover within just a few minutes. Also stay hydrated!

Oh, also have you tried Sea-Bands? They are like a stretchy knit bracelet with a hard plastic nub embedded in the fabric - that puts pressure on the inside of your wrists. I bought some on a lark, not believing they would help at all. . . but whoa! Wearing them has really helped us PREVENT feeling sick in the first place (though I still always carry ginger on me for emergency situations).

My 10 year old DD wears Sea-Bands. Check Amazon, they have kid sizes which are slightly smaller than the ones you can find in CVS, etc.
Also, I give her ginger gum after she comes off a coaster just to settle her stomach.
I also carry those cooling towels you can buy at a sporting goods store or Bed Bath and Beyond and put it around her neck and also make a cool compress for her forehead and inside her wrists.

All of these are great suggestions. My son takes zofran with him. It's a prescription medication. He and I both have used it. I'm not sure if pediatricians are all okay with prescribing meds but my son get car sickness really bad so they give him a prescription when we're going on a trip.

I will have to try the altoids idea!

Try to give them a mix with essential oils! http://natadviser.com/essential-oils-for-nausea-vomiting-upset-stomach/It actually does help, you can see some recipes here , helped my kids greately

The best help is to sit and relax in AC...after 5-10 minutes, supplement with a little ice water to drink. Let them relax and put NO pressure on them to have to get up and get moving somewhere for a FP, a meal, etc. Just let them be and usually after 30-60 minutes, the motion sickness will pass. But, then I'd take it very easy and skip most rides the rest of the day and spend time with shows/characters/experiences/etc.

AC, cold water to sip, deep breathing, and no one bothering me (at all!) for 5-10 minutes usually makes it better enough to enjoy the rest of the day for me.
