RCL Anthem in rough storm yesterday

Wow! I have been in some rough seas on some of our sailings, but nothing that bad. Scary!

According to @RCLcorp on twitter which I'm not even sure is a real royal caribbean account or not since it isn't verified they are turning around and coming home, issuing everyone a full refund and 50% off another cruise.

Man, so much for always going around the storm. I feel so sorry for all those people - I probably would have been crying in my stateroom until it was over...!

Seems Anthem did not have anyplace to run and hide:

Anthem of the Seas Caught in Extreme Storm Off U.S. East Coast

By Mike Schuler

Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is expected into Port Canaveral, Florida on Monday with major interior damage after the cruise ship was caught off guard in an ‘extreme’ hurricane force storm off the U.S. east coast. The 4,180 passenger cruise ship departed New York for Port Canaveral on Saturday and sailed directly into the path of rapidly

Update: Anthem of the Seas Cruise Canceled After Being Caught in Severe Storm

Updated, 12:49 p.m. - Anthem of the Seas' current sailing will be cut short. The ship will return to Cape Liberty where passengers will be disembarked. All passengers will receive a full refund and a future cruise certificated worth 50 percent of the cruise fare paid.

In a tweet Royal Caribbean cited forecasted weather conditions as part of the reason for the cancellation. "We're also sensitive to what guests have already been through," the line tweeted.

Seems she may have had more damage and problems then originally noted.

I am beinging to think Anthem is going to be dissected as to why they hit the weather like they did to the Fantasy and Sandy 3 years ago. hat may explain the fast generous compensation.

Oh my goodness this is so scary. Those poor passengers I would have been terrified.

In my room crying, praying with the life vest on! According to the article posted, if true, ship was listing 45 degrees, waves up to the life boats, watertight doors secured. Impressive the ship was safe, but I would have been terrified.

Oh my! We were on the Magic during Hurricane Jeane back in 2005 and it was rough, but nothing like this!

It does seem like she was beat up!

"I was shaking all over," passenger Shara Strand of New York City wrote to The Associated Press via Facebook on Monday. "Panic attack, things like that ... I've been on over 20 cruises, I've been through a hurricane, it was never like this. Never. Everyone is saying they never saw anything like last night."

Sixteen-year-old passenger Gabriella Lairson says she and her father, Sam, could feel the boat begin to sway by 2:30 p.m. The captain directed passengers to their cabins. There, the Lairsons heard glasses shatter in the bathroom, and they put their belongings in drawers and closets to prevent them from flying across the room. They ventured out on the balcony, where Sam Lairson shot video showing wave after wave rising below them.

"The winds were so strong that I thought the phone would blow from my hands," Sam Lairson, of Ocean City, New Jersey, said in an email. "After that we had to keep the doors to the balconies sealed."

Gabriella Lairson says that by early Monday morning, people were out and about on the ship, checking out the minor damage in some public areas. Some staterooms also were damaged, according to a Royal Caribbean statement.

Hmmmm... Ordered to stay in stateroom, glass shattering in bathroom, so they went out on the BAlCONY?!?!

I'm sharing an email we received from RCCL...

Dear Travel Partner,

On Sunday, February 7th, while sailing to Port Canaveral, Florida, Anthem of the Seas experienced extreme wind and sea conditions, with wind speeds higher than what was forecasted. In an abundance of caution, the captain asked all guests to stay in their stateroom until the weather improved. At this time there have not been any serious injuries reported. The ship has sustained some damage to the public areas and guest staterooms, which in no way affect the sea-worthiness of the ship. However, keeping our guests comfort in mind, we have made a decision to turn around and sail back to Cape Liberty, New Jersey. This change in our itinerary will keep us out of the storm’s path and provide us with a comfortable return. The ship is now scheduled to arrive back into Cape Liberty at 6 a.m. EST on February 10th.

Due to the impact the weather has had on your clients’ cruise vacation, Royal Caribbean International will provide each guest with a full refund of the cruise fare paid. Cruise fare refunds will automatically be processed back to original form of payment.

Royal Caribbean would also like to provide your clients with the opportunity to sail with us again. We will be providing each guest with a future cruise certificate for 50 percent of the cruise fare paid for their February 6, 2016, Anthem of the Seas sailing. This certificate may be used for a future cruise on any Royal Caribbean ship within the next year. Future cruise certificates for your clients will be mailed to you within four weeks.

We sincerely regret that we will be unable to deliver the Royal Caribbean cruise vacation that your clients were anticipating. We understand that your guests’ vacation time is very precious and can assure you that we did not take this decision lightly. We thank you for your understanding, and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you and your clients.

Sincerely,

Royal Caribbean International

Looking at the weather map included in your post it seems that this was a very large storm. In your experience (and I recall you have a lot of it) would it have been reasonable for the ship to sail further out towards Bermuda to try to get around the storm? Or could it even have made it out there considering the time she left port? Also, would they have been safe if they had remained tied up at Bayone?

This ship was docked next to us on our Wonder cruise week before last. That's one gigantic ship.

We were struck by the number of elderly among the passengers, many with walkers or wheelchairs. That demographic would definitely have a tougher time with this than the average demographic on a Disney cruise. I feel bad for them. A high % of passengers we saw would have major difficulties if things crashed in their stateroom.

Gotta say I can't imagine how terrifying this must have been for those on board. I like motion on the ship, but I'm sure I'd be soiling myself.

On the good side, it's pretty amazing that the ship was able to stay sea worthy and there were no serious injuries.

Yikes! Looks so scary. For those who are knowledgable about cruising - why would they have cruised right into this? Did they underestimate how severe the storm was? Did they think the impact wouldn't have been as intense? Surely they knew there was storm in their path - could they have not delayed departure? Obviously I am not in a position to offer opinion. I am genuinely wondering how they found themselves in this situation!!!!!!!

This is the first part of a three part clip on you tube that was posted from someone on the ship. It sounds a lot like Sandy, Mother Nature decided to defy predictions, and now RCCL will look bad because of it.

I followed this on cruise critic where many passengers were posting and updating as the event unfolded. The general consensus on that board was that RCCL crew handled this very professionally and did the absolute best they could given the terrible circumstances. In terms of comp, they certainly went above and beyond IMHO. Based on the cruise contract, they didn't have to do anything. But they comped the cruise, gave everyone 50% off a future cruise, comped the mini-bars in the staterooms, free wi-fi and free open bar this afternoon. They are also still paying the TA commission. I'm impressed. This was, obviously, a terrible, scary situation, but their reaction speaks volumes of their customer service.
