Rumor: The Great Movie Ride closing for good?

No it will be updated not any time soon but there is no thruth that it was ever considered leaving.

Leaving? The thread is about changes...and it is an OLD thread someone revived.

Maybe somewhere in the 11 pages of old crud someone talked about it closing...

And how about instead of the swimmers and bubbles, start it off with an homage to Elvis and Jailhouse Rock?

Lord of the Rings could take the place of Tarzan......and Hitchcock instead of Alien.

Hitchcock was Universal. I still remember going to the Hitchcock show when Uni first opened and enjoying all the little things in the post show area. (Such as the stairs and Statue of liberty from Vertigo.

Me too...I remember the Universal show. Is it still there? Does Disney show any of the Universal movies in the montage at the end? For some reason, I thought I remembered King Kong being in that movie.

No. Shrek replaced it, 6-7 years ago.
Such a pity - I loved the Psycho house and the Rear Window area.

I have an idea, just fix the first scene the way it was supposed to work from the beginning without the lame curtain and just bubbles. It was really something spectacular when it first opened and worked! Kinda like the yeti I guess:rolleyes1

Recently the guys over on WDW Today discussed all of the attractions at DHS on an A-E ticket scale. I think they settled on a D ticket for the Great Movie Ride. To me that's largely because it's in the state it's in. It hasn't received substantial upgrades in 21 years.

While I would like to see an addition to the scope of the Monster's Inc Coaster added to this park, I think Star Tours 2.0 and a major refurbishment to The Great Movie Ride are needed far more. They can probably remove the Tarzan scene, and possibly the Alien scene as well. They could also use a much sharper digital projection for the Finale.

In my opinion - there are two attractions that are REALLY in desperate need of major overhaul/refurbishment. Those two are - Ellen's Energy Adventure - the Animatronic of Ellen is a MAJOR eyesore! It's horrible - I've seen new cars that don't shine as much as Ellen's face! It really don't even look like her! :(
Plus the movie AND projection technology at the beginning and the end needs to be upgraded. I think the ride itself is awesome - but I would REALLY like to see a sustainable energy company take over the sponsorship and put that message out there for the public - EPCOT is about the future - sustainable energy IS the future.

AND - the GREAT MOVIE RIDE.
SO much of the GMR is no longer relevant - and lacks the energy and emotion needed to evoke memories of an era gone by - but still give a nod to the future. Technology has advanced SO MUCH since the GMR was built that in it's current state, it comes across as a museum and a relic of the past.

I agree Alien needs to go - and Disney has had a hit with Tarzan - since the original - yet it receives no mention! I realize GMR is a salute to Motion Pictures - but it really needs to have some mention of the advancement of animation technology.

I agree - move the great movie ride forward! :)

Not to be nitpicky but the Statue of Liberty scene was from Saboteur not Vertigo (big Hitchcock fan). I didn't realize that this attraction had closed. Since we've started getting Disney APs we haven't been to Universal at all. I do want to check out the Simpson's ride though.

The Great Movie Ride used to be a flagship attraction for the then Disney-MGM Studios. I remember riding it first set the tone for the rest of your day there. It really needs to get some love and make people EXCITED about your day at Hollywood Studios AND the movies.

Needs to be UPDATED. To many old movies that most people that come to Disney have never heard of. Ive seen all of them at 45 years old but I like movies that were great at the time. Got to mix it up maybe with the cast member that rides the boat with you. Since when has America watched a western or gangster film. Needs to be UPDATED.

There is a way to celebrate the past, present and future of movies....keep some of the past that is on display but update to stir up an interest in film and cinema.

Doh! my bad. It's been AGES since i've seen a Hitchcock movie, and even longer since I was at Uni when they had the Hitchcock "show". Thanks for correcting me.

Gangster movie? Last year to start with. Public Enemies.

Western? Been several over the past few years. 3:10 to Yuma. Jonah Hex. The Assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford.

Both Genre's are also decidedly American in cinematic history. Western's especially are classic. While movie tastes may occasionally shift away from the genres, They do have a very strong resilience and aren't gone for long before you see some return to the big screen.

It seems as though this rumor has new legs, as it is being discussed quite openly on Facebook and in other forums. I, for one, belive that the attraction needs a bit of a redo, to incorporate not only some of the newer films that have come out in the past 20 years (Jurassic Park, etc.) but to also celebrate the future of motion pictures. It also needs new digital projection, and an upgraded script.

I agree with the updates, but universal made jurassic park.

Many of the movies featured aren't made by Disney either. However, they probably do need to license many of them, and since Universal uses JP at their park, it is unlikely that they could get a license.
