From Europe to Africa in America - A Sisters' Expedition

How wonderful that Jiko did such a lovely job with Katherina's food issues! I think that is a fabulous restaurant- always happy to have dinner at Jiko!

And so glad you took a bathroom pic!! They always make me smile! :goodvibes

Holy lightning updates! Love love love your meal at Jiko. I'm drooling just looking at the lamb! I really need to try that place one day. They seemed really accommodating for Katharina's meal needs. Really cool picture with Mickey and friends flying over your head like Soarin' :thumbsup2

Wonderful update on Jiko.

I would imagine if there are chairs at the bar, they'd serve. In fact, I think I saw a few patrons sitting there on our visit. I'll go back and look at some photos to check.

On a few occasions, I've gotten food to go at the Jiko bar--usually a flatbread. Of course, I would order a drink while waiting. :drinking1

I've seen customers at the bar order from the Jiko menu and eat at the bar or one of the tables in the bar area.

I have not eaten at Jiko either. In fact I don't think I have ever convinced family to try a "signature" restuarant.

Put it on the wish list I guess.:goodvibes

I totally get Katharina's idea to eat something with no potential allergens in order to to partake in something a bit "risky" shall we say, later on.

That's how I keep most of my allergies under control yet still continue to eat some of what I am allergic to without suffering the effects.

That filet looks yummy!

I know I haven't kept up very well with your TR, but I had to read about Jiko. I am eating there this May and your pictures and commentary certainly make me excited to be doing so. The entrees look lovely and that dessert - yum!

This post is a tribute to many TR writers, but mainly to Glenn!!

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

When I read your update I naturally started at the top of the page since I was a work and did not have the bookmark as to where I left off. I just got home, so I went back to see what I missed.

I think of Sam Eagle when I see MSEP. At the end the patriotic float says "To Honor America" and I usually think- "It's a tribute to all nations, but mostly America."

Well it's almost diner time here and I am so hungry after reading this update. What wonderful food! YUM! Somehow a sandwich just doesn't sound very good.

Great update! Jiko is a very magical place. Now that I've been to south Africa, I would like to go back as I would really appreciate it!

It is such a lovely restaurant! And so many great choices. I'm so pleased that they were creative for Katharina's issues. :thumbsup2

I think I have read from people who sat there, so it seems to be a possibility. I am looking forward to your report on Jiko.

The service Katharina got was very special and this is why Jiko was one of the two restaurants that were definitive ADRs for our October trip.

I know that some people had issues with Jiko, but I only had wonderful meals there as well. :thumbsup2

Yes, this TR has to be finished before I board the plane to Paris on Sunday!! :scared1:

Jiko is a great restaurant, I can't recommend it enough. :goodvibes

The Soarin picture was one of the special pictures that I really wanted to get! I think it is so cute. :thumbsup2

Kathy, thanks for the info! I think it might be a great options if you did not get an ADR: a drink and a flatbread at the bar! :thumbsup2

The signatures are really wonderful restaurants! I know that they are more expensive and I think paying for a meal for a whole family must be unpleasant. Especially if you think that some won't appreciate the food anyway... But I think the signatures would be great places for solo diners! ;)

Once Katharina explained me her reasoning, I did understand it as well. At first it just seemed so sad that she chose something so plain. But sometimes plain is better...

I am very behind on a lot of my subscribed threads as well... I hope you will have a wonderful meal at Jiko in May!! :thumbsup2

Jiko was wonderful, but I hope you did find something that you wanted to eat at home anyway. ;)

Great update! Jiko is a very magical place. Now that I've been to south Africa, I would like to go back as I would really appreciate it!

Oh yes, I remember that you were planning a trip - it was with your sister, wasn't it? Did you enjoy it? I loved Namibia and the tiny part I saw of South Africa and would love to return one day! I think Jiko is not really that much African, only has some inspiration from there. But it is a wonderful restaurant! :goodvibes

February 5, 2010

Today was departure day – we were really sad that the trip was going to end. But we still had some plans to look forward to.

So we were up early again to finish the packing. Which included some organizational skills since today was going to be a really warm day, but it was going to be freezing when we would arrive in Berlin...

We were successful in getting everything packed in a timely manner and then headed out to get some breakfast. But no kids meal and breakfast platter today! Instead: breakfast at Boma.

Our ADR was at 9am and when we arrived the restaurant was rather busy, but we later on realized that there were nearly no people arriving after us. So this was a good time to go!

We really enjoyed all the breakfast offerings there and this time Katharina got another very friendly chef who showed her the buffet and then offered to make her some dairy free pancakes! She was excited about this offer and accepted it. Shortly thereafter this plate was served:

This was a really nice gesture and I liked them, altough I think they were not only lactose free but also made with a kind of wholemeal flour. The only thing I would complain about was the portion size – did they want to prevent me from eating anything from the buffet? There were two giant pancakes and four little ones.

Unfortunately this is the only picture I took of breakfast.

After my 2009 trip I was convinced that Tusker House breakfast was at least as good as Boma (where I had eaten in 2008), if not better. This trip I had both breakfasts in one trip. And in 2010 Boma did win easily! I found there to be more varied options than at Tusker House. I am not a plain eggs, sausage, potato breakfast eater. I like to try lots of different things. Oh, and of course they did win a huge brownie point by giving my little sister a Mickey Head pancake!!

Magdalene and Katharina, sorry I haven't been by much lately but very busy at work. I did want to make a quick stop and check in with you before you head out on your next trip in like 4 days I think! :woohoo: Hope you have a wonderful time!

I wasn't expecting so many updates when I got here though. Some really good stuff but only time for a couple of comments. Love the TT picture. Except for Magdalene, was it "everyone look stoic and bored" day??? :rotfl2:

Funny, I don't remember Donald's hat being so intrusive in the picture I got of Drew with him. Seems it was more of a shade producer for him! Good thing the edges weren't real sharp or we might have had a beheading of poor Magdalene!

Katharina, that filet looks fantastic! Haven't eaten at Jiko but both of your meals did look very appetizing, and the appetizer and dessert looked really good too. Haven't done breakfast at Boma either, but it is definitely on the list for our upcoming trip.......whenever it finally gets to come up. :confused3

And I am really disappointed in some of my fellow Americans on here knowing so little about the history of this country!!! :sad2: Most Americans know that the first Thanksgiving the Pilgrims and Indians had turkey and maize, but it is a little known fact for everyone but those who are well steeped in historic details that the maize was served in many ways, a few of which was creamed corn, corn muffins, mexican corn (we learned our open border policy directly from the Native Americans) and of course......Popcorn! So naturally they would have Turkey Legs and Popcorn together in the American Pavilion! It's a centuries old tradition!!! :thumbsup2

That's a lot of pancakes!

It's interesting to see the neck-and-neck battle between Boma and Tusker House over the years.

By the way....your trip is getting so close now! :yay:

The Mickey Pancakes looked fantastic !!! As for Turkey Legs and Popcorn , I admit my American History is weak !!I was to busy studying all the wives of Henry the 8th !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Fabulous updates ladies!:thumbsup2

Jiko is on mine and my DH's list for next trip, it looks very good! Heck, I'd go just to have these. Although, I can't imagine they'd be gluten free.

Wow, those pancakes are enormous! Boma was certainly generous with their portions for breakfast. I LOVE that it's shaped like Mickey, so cute!

Isn't departure day awful? I hate leaving. I'm usually planning another trip in my head as we leave too! DH thinks I'm crazy but I don't care.

What a wonderful trip for you and Katharina.:goodvibes

Hi Marvin, don't worry I know exactly what it feels like when you don't have the time for the DIS! :goodvibes

You are right, our next Disney trip is getting closer and that's the reason for the many updates. :goodvibes

Thank you very much for the explanation for the turkey leg and popcorn combo. :thumbsup2 I was sure that the Imagineers did chose something really traditional there. :goodvibes

I hope you get your next trip sorted out and then can proceed to make reservations. Both breakfast at Boma and dinner at Jiko can be highly recommended!

What a sweet ending! In case I don't get back before you leave, have a magical trip!

Thank you! There is still some park touring ahead in this trip, so not yet the end of the trip. :goodvibes

Thank you for the good wishes for the next trip!

And she did not even share with me... :confused3 (well, I got waffles from the main buffet, so I wasn't too sad about that...)

You know, the question of Boma or Tusker House is one of those recurring topics on the restaurant board! So I thought I give some insight. :goodvibes

 Just a few more days until Paris!!

The Mickey Pancakes looked fantastic !!! As for Turkey Legs and Popcorn , I admit my American History is weak !!I was to busy studying all the wives of Henry the 8th !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Do you still know all the wives by name?? :rotfl:
