[size=+1]Happy Monday everyone
Tonight we had a great evening planned with dinner at the Kona Café
Neither of us had ever been to the Polynesian Resort before so we decided that we would head over there early and check it out
After walking around the resort we thought it would be nice to grab a drink and head out to the pool area
So you may have noticed a picture of the wonderful Lapu Lapu in my opening post but here is a picture of me holding this alcoholic wonder to give you a sense of scale
Yep, this drink is HUGE
.. Two hands are required at all times
Lapu Lapu - Myer's original dark rum and tropical fruit juices served in a fresh pineapple topped with Bacardi 151 rum
The carved out Pineapple was full to the brim with liquid and it was quite a challenge walking out to the pool without spilling any
Note: If I had attempted to go and purchase a second one I doubt I would have managed this challenge
This was a delicious drink and although there was probably enough alcohol in this one beverage to stun a small Elephant at the Animal Kingdom, I decided that as it was served in a whole fruit its gotta be good for you right?
DH had a Coke and we sat outside chatting to a lovely American lady who had won her stay at the Poly (concierge level) in a competition how cool is that ?
As the time approached for our ADR at Kona, we headed back inside and checked in for dinner. We were handed a buzzer which started flashing about 5 minutes later and we were led to a great little booth table at the edge of the restaurant
Our server was soon with us and offered to take our drink order. DH just wanted some water and I decided on one of these
Kona Cool Sundown - a refreshing blend of vodka, Chambord, and cranberry juice
Mmm, this was another great cocktail. It didnt seem to be too heavy on the alcohol (just as well after my Lapu Lapu
) so it was a really light and refreshing drink
Before our appetizers were delivered our server brought us our Pineapple Bread
Pineapple Bread & Macadamia Nut Butter
I know that everyone always says this but this bread and butter is just wonderful
We really wanted to finish it all but knew that we had a lot of food to get through so resisted the temptation
Soon our appetizers arrived and we must have been really hungry as we had already began to tuck in before I realised I hadnt taken a picture
DHs appetiser
..
Pot Stickers - wok-seared duck dumplings with creamy ginger soy sauce
I think that there was originally four or five of them?
And for me
.
Lump Crab Cakes - with Asian tartar sauce and pineapple relish
DH loved, loved, loved the Pot Stickers. He said that they were very light and that the duck had a wonderful flavour
The lump crab cakes were very generously filled but I have to say I found the breading a little heavy. DH tried one and disagreed so it was purely a personal taste issue. Overall we were both very impressed with the quality and freshness of both dishes and the sauces we were given were the perfect accompaniments
Time for our Entrees here is DHs dish
Pomegranate Barbecued Pork Chop served with pan-roasted fingerling potatoes and braised Swiss chard
Now DH doesnt usually get over excited by food but he couldnt stop talking about how tasty this dish was and claimed that it was the best meal he had eaten all trip. Its funny that the two dishes he seemed to enjoy most were both Pork (one at Boma and now this) He very rarely orders pork at home as he tend to find it quite dry (not a problem with either of these restaurants) Needless to say he cleared his plate
I decided on the Miso Glazed Mahi Mahi
Miso Glazed Mahi-mahi - served with Asian noodles and baby bok choy
Everything was perfectly cooked and the fish was moist and delicately flavoured.
I love the taste of Miso but this flavour didnt seem to come through at all which meant that the dish was perhaps a little under seasoned for my taste. The Bok Choy was well prepared and still had a nice crunch to it and the noodles were delightful
As always we were just too full to order a dessert which was a shame as everything that was being delivered to other tables looked wonderful
Would we go back to Kona?
.. Definitely, the atmosphere was great, our server attentive and the food was fresh and beautifully presented. I dont think I would order the Mahi Mahi again but there were so many other great options I would be sure to find something I liked. DH would certainly find it difficult not to order the Pork again and next time we will make sure we save room for dessert
out of
from me but 5 out of 5 for DH
We left Kona very full and very happy and did a quick loop of the monorail (I love doing this in the evening when it is quite) before heading back to our car for the short trip back to our hotel
Coming Up Next
