Hair Braiding on Ship - Advice & Photos?

I would love to get a few braids done on the ship. Does anyone have pictures of a few (2-4) braids? I'm trying to picture what would look best. My hair is relatively short (above my shoulders), curly, and is thinner in the front/sides than the back. I am concerned about getting too many braids with thinner hair (how it will look, hair loss when removed, etc.). Any advice?

Also, I saw the hair braiding sign posted on another thread and it mentioned appointments next to one of the times on Port Canaveral day. I was unclear if this was for only those particular hours or for anytime on the ship. Thanks!

I can offer you a photo of some braids done on short hair, but we didn't have it done on ship. These ones cost me way too much, but I know better this time and will have them done on the ship should my daughter want it done again on her now LONG hair!

I don't have a photo but I have fine hair and what I did last time was my hair french braided - looked great and not very expensive - stayed in awhile also - I had one down each side of my head because my hair was shorter and harder to do onle large french braid - I only found out they did it there after I went to the spa to see if they did it in the hair salon and was told no and that was fine with me because the hair braider stand was much cheaper than the spa hair styling.

Sorry to hijack... but I'd love to see some more hair braid pics too.
My daughter has super thin hair (she's only 3) and I want to get her hair done too. Most likely on the top behind her bangs...
And who knows, maybe I'll get my hair don too. LOL:goodvibes

I wanna see pics too...my dd has thin hair too and I would love for the top to be braided...cannot make up my mind on the beads...read a trip report that said they were hard to sleep on at first. It would make her hair so easy on the trip. The boat is so windy and my hair is thick and curly...the wind helps to dry it but then it is no help...braiding may be god for the beach day on CC for me!

And she would look adorable, too! I hope you're one of the lucky moms with a strong and patient daughter. Just be prepared to settle for only one braid--many 3 year olds don't have the patience and think it hurts having someone constantly pulling your hair. While I love the look and think they look so precious when it's all done, it just breaks my heart when I see the little ones sitting on the stool whimpering in pain.

You can sort of see my DD's braids in this pic. She gets 4 or 5 on the top of her head along her part. They are braids and not cornrows, she wouldn't stand for anyone to pull on her hair to get the cornrows.
The little girl with the pink bow in her hair has her's done the same way. She was one of our tablemates and when the mom saw DD's braids she decided to get her DD's done the same way since she didn't want her DD to get cornrows.

***When getting the braids or cornrows, DO NOT FORGET to put sunscreen on the scalp! A sunburned scalp is very painful.***

Thanks for everyone's help so far - please keep it coming! I'd love to see as many pictures as possible. I still haven't seen anything like what I'm imagining yet. Thanks!

Here's a pic of my daughter. She has a very sensitive scalp and this didn't bother her too much to have done. She loved it and it looked good throughout the cruise and for about 3 weeks after we got home. She said she would defiinitely do it again, but not get the beads just the braids

We had it done on the ship (by Juanita ... she was awesome!) and I liked it much better than my nieces, who had theirs done on CC.

Here are some pictures of my girls from 2005. My youngest DD loved it and has her hair braided every trip we go on. My oldest DD however, hated it! She even took them out before we got off the ship and has never had it done again. However, her hair looked adorable while it was done.

And this is what my youngest had done in October of 2008. Doesn't she look happy!

Now, each time we have had the girls' hair braided it has been on the ship. Cost has been around $25 plus tip. I think it is well worth it. Brooke keeps her hair braided for a couple weeks. The only thing is be sure to put sun screen on the parts or else their scalp will get burned.

Thanks for all the pictures!
I am undecided on whether or not she will get them done. I think she will do good with the patience part - all I need to do is give her a lollipop and she'll sit as long as the lollipop is still there. But I have no idea how she will do if it hurts. Another thought I had, is what do you do when she sleeps in them or needs to shower. How does that work? I think those beads would hurt when she's in the bed.

I can show you pictures of ours, but we didn't have ours done on the ship. Maybe they are nicer to your scalp on the ship, but ours hurt A LOT.

I had a headache for 24 hours, and then when I took it out, I had another headache. Washing my hair helped. Needless to say, mine didn't stay in very long. My dd who was 8 at the time, left hers in a few days, but she said hers hurt too.

Let me know if you still want my pics.

Does she have a sensitive head? I do, and my dd did not. They hurt both of us. A few of the pictures above didn't seem like they were really tight. Maybe you can request for them to not be too tight? But then, what is the point if it won't stay in?:confused3

Maybe it is the cornrows that hurt more? My dd had hers done at Costa Maya, and I had my done at Cozumel.

Do the braiders have books or anything you can look through to decide what you want? I can't decide whether to let my girls get these done or not I had read a post a while back where some were saying the opposite. They said that they were done so tight on the ship that they actually got blisters and had a lot of hair loss. If that's the case my girls will not get them done. Everywhere we go (beach, amusement parks) they bug me to get braids and I always say no because of the cost but Disney's prices seem pretty reasonable. I might just let them get a regular braid with some beads, even that will make them happy.

What is the cost on the ship? I know in '04 we decided to do them off ship because of the price.

The only thing is on the ship you know that the items used are sanitized. Off the ship...that isn't as likely.

I'll post pics of DD later tonight but she did 6 braids with beads (3 on each side of her head). She did straight braids and not the cornrows. She was trying to decide and she sat and watched a 7 yo have her hair done. The poor thing was crying by the time she was half way through it. The mother just kept encouraging her, telling her that she looked great. The girl just kept begging her mother to let her stop. :sad2: She took one look at that kid and told me she only wanted braids and not the cornrows.

Braids for DD were $1 each including the beads. Best bargain on the boat!!! :thumbsup2
