Will the food I pack explode on the airplane?

I have a 14 month old that eats a snack twice a day. She usually has fruit, yogurt, cheese & whole grain crackers, etc. To curb the expensive I want to pack some applesauce, peaches, & mixed fruit to take with us. I don't mind buying her a banana or two while we're there (we're staying 8 days), but it will be too expensive to buy all of her snacks while there. My husband is afraid the air pressure from the plane will cause the packaged fruit cups & applesauce to explode. Has anyone experienced this?

We've never had any issues with that stuff exploding in our checked bags. I always pack it in a large ziploc bag though to be on the safe side. Definitely helps to cut down costs with little ones! For something like crackers or cereal, I put it in those Twist n Go Ziploc containers- or they may end up crumbs!

I brought Dole fruit cups and applesauce in a large
softsided cooler and they were fine.

The only thing I had blow up was a bag of pretzels...Definately put them in a ziplock bag to be on the safe side (which you will need to do anyway if you are putting them in your carryon)

It looks to me like you are talking about checked luggage, but the PP mentioned the carryon. Please be advised that you will not be permitted to take applesauce and yogurt through security in a carryon. If you want to take such things on board the plane with you, you'd have to buy them in the airport once you pass security.

Yes, I'm talking about the checked luggage. If it was the carry-on, I probably wouldn't be worried too much (at least I would know it wasn't slung around and jostled as much; it would just be the air pressure to worry about causing the packages to explode). I'll double bag everything and take my chances that the fruit cups make it. Thanks for everyone's help.

I brought a suitcase full of canned goods and food items including fruitcups and applesauce on my last trip to stock up my Owner's Locker. Nothing leaked.

Yes pack your food in Ziplocks but this is only incase they break open from getting thrown around. There is no pressure difference in the cargo versus the main cabin. The plane does pressurize above 12,000 feet but insignificant to make something explode.

Another option to consider....

There are online grocery stores that would deliver food to the resort.

If you're not looking for perishables (which it sounds like you aren't) check out Amazon's grocery store--they'll generally deliver for free.

That way you'll be able to just pick it up when you check in and not have to worry about it in your suitcases at all.

I think it will be ok if you put it in a ziploc, just in case. But - if you are really concerned - you can always put the individual containers of applesauce, etc inside socks. Just roll the socks around it and you have instant padding. Or, you can pack the 6 packs (or whatever size) inside rolled up towels, etc..or if you save big kleenex boxes, stick them in there, with some socks around it. Just make sure that something cushy is packed around it and that everything is in a ziploc and it should be fine :) I suppose you could always pack it inside a rubbermaid container or one of the quart sized tupperwares (maybe stack them?) and then use the tupperwares to keep pretzels fresh, if you bought bags of snacks.
