Which side does the salad plate and the bread plate go? And, how do you know you are "right" about this?

Bread plate goes to the left, and generally the salad plate is right on top of the dinner plate. I am going by all my years waitressing and working banquets years ago.

I don't know about the salad plate, but a couple years ago I had Regis and Kelly on. Kelly was telling a story about how smart her kid was. But it turned out to be a handy trick.

Put your hands up, now touch the tip of your first fingers to your thumbs, and look at it. On the left hand it makes a b, right hand a d. So bread plate goes on the left, drink glass is on the right.

With salad, we usually just put the salad plate on top of the dinner plate, and after we eat the salad, then we just remove the plate.

Both the bread and salad plate go to the left of your main plate, the bread & butter plate goes above the tip of the forks, and the salad plate goes to the left of the forks and a little above. When no bread and butter plate is used, the salad plate may go at the tip of the forks.

Yes! You make a lower case "b" with your left hand, and a lower case "d" with your right. The bread plate goes on the "b" side, the drink goes on the "d" side. Salad plate goes on top and is taken away when the main course is served.

And for those of us who are further challenged, fork goes on the left=fork and left both have 4 letters. Spoon and Knife go on the right=spoon, knife, and right all have 5 letters. Yes, I have to rely on this when setting the table.
