Seem to recall a # of years back that David Copperfield was going to open a restaurant at --I think--MGM. I sort of lost track of the thing, but does anybody recall that?? And why it never came to be???

Your memory is fine. It was indeed going to be at the Stuidos.

My recollection is that the David Copperfield restaurant was going to be the second of a chain, with the first being in NYC. But the original never panned out and plans for the one at Disney were quietly withdrawn.

Yup, David Copperfield simply could never raise the money to go into business.

We were excited about it, and disappointed when it never came to fruition. I, too, remember it was proposed for a time for DTD West Side. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I think it was first advertised as coming to DTD. Then, we saw that it was being advertised as coming to MGM-Disney.

It would have been a neat addition to WDW. I always wondered if it was turning out to be just too expensive to build. I think it contemplated lots of magical effects, illusions, etc. You'd think if it had any promise at all, Disney Inc. would have invested, in order to bring it to WDW and Disneyland at least.

Oh well. There's always the lame mechanical animals at Rainforest Cafe for so-called special effects!

They started construction in NYC. They found the effects that were planned, including levitating tables, cost a lot more than was budgeted in order to get them to work. They had enough money to sign a lease and start construction.

They finally decided there was no way they could charge enough in order to cover the costs required to set up the restaurant the way it was envisioned.

I seem to remember the signs for it on the right as you walked up the pathway to the gates at MGM.

Copperfields was to be located outside the gates at MGM, to the right as you enter.

What folks are remembering at West Side were signs announcing a future "Copperfields Magic Underground Store". It would have been located where the "Mickey's Groove" store is. There was even a logo:

This makes me sad that it never came to be. :sad2: I've been a Copperfield fan ever since I was a little girl and he even made me disappear in one of his shows 2 years back. :teleport:
