Hello and welcome one and all! :flower3:

My name is Karin

i-rV8WRrG-L.jpg

and I am not new to the Disboards, I have been a member for a long time and have written trip reports for many of our travels over the years.
But getting older, work as a teacher needed more and more of my time. And then shortly before finally being able to retire Covid hit and travel was no longer easily doable but one can dream about it while hiding at home.

Once the world opened up again and I finally was able to retire we started to travel again. Turns out we are nearly as often “on the road” as we are home nowadays.

Lately I have been asked by some Disboards members to start writing trip reports again and I think it’s time to share our adventures again.

So let’s get started:

Who are we?

i-ZkSW842-L.jpg

As I mentioned before, my name is Karin and I am in my 60s, a retired teacher living in Austria all of my life. I have always had the urge to travel but now being retired it’s the perfect way of life. Seeing so many new and exciting places.

My travel partner is my brother, Thomas, who is a retired mailman. He has been delivering mail for most of his life but is happy to now just get the mail from our postbox.

What’s in store?

20231231_133838.jpg

- We started out this year by spending our New Year’s festivities in the “Salzkammergut”, a beautiful part of Austria with lakes and mountains.

- In early January we spent a week at Disneyland Paris as Disney’s Electrical Sky Parade was introduced.

- In March we decided on a whim to return to Disneyland Paris for the end of our AP year and a passholder event.

20240409_094601.jpg

- In April we took a river cruise on the Danube

20240502_104022.jpg

- In May Alison (franandaj) paid us a visit

20240529_125502.jpg

- Later in May and early June we took a back to back cruise on Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady to the Adriatic Sea and Greek Isles

20240703_143256.jpg

- In July we spent another week in the “Salzkammergut”

i-LbvXVFC-M.jpg

- In early September we’ll set out for another LONG (2 months) trip to the US, or well let’s be honest – Disney where we’ll stay at OKW, CR, SSR and YC before a b2b cruise on the Disney Wish just to return to SSR and OKW before embarking on the Disney Fantasy for a cruise to Nassau, 2 visits to Castaway Cay and a visit to Lighthouse point. Upon returning we’ll head back to OKW until it’s time to return to Austria.

- So far we have no plans for November and December apart from the fact that at the end of the month of December, when we head to the Salzkammergut again for New Year’s celebrations.

:stitch:Be warned …. you will see a LOT of food pics and a lot of scenery.:stitch:

Looking forward to see who dares to come along.

:thanks:

Congratulations on choosing that profession. It's definitely rewarding, but it drains you a lot too. 7 years seems a long time, but it will be over in no time. Just take a few more Disney trips in between. :rolleyes1

So glad I found your long awaited trip report. Haha Looking forward to it.

I am glad you found it too! Working on the first few updates now and I guess tomorrow I will be able to post the first one. ::yes::

Joining in! Those trips sounded amazing, what did you think of the Danube cruise? We've been looking at doing one at some point.

The upcoming trip to the US and the cruises sounds so magical, I cannot wait to hear about all of it, what a dream!

I can’t thank you enough for sharing all of your plans!

I have read all your other trip reports and was so excited to see you start again!
Yaaaa for retirement, speaking selfishly so we all can read along and live vicariously thru these adventures:worship:

Joining in!

Welcome! :flower3:

Those trips sounded amazing, what did you think of the Danube cruise? We've been looking at doing one at some point.

They were all great. We really enjoyed all of our river cruises. The Danube is home turf so to speak, so no planning necessary as we were familiar with most of the ports.
It's different to the cruises at sea as it is such a small vessel and you get to know the crew members and other guests pretty fast. Also, the pace of the ship is so leisurely.
This cruise was on a ship more geared towards the European market and it was on their newest ship, which was absolutely stunning and their food options were really good!

The upcoming trip to the US and the cruises sounds so magical, I cannot wait to hear about all of it, what a dream!

We are so looking forward to such a long trip and all of our favourite resorts. It's our longest trip staying at Disney so far, and we cannot wait to really enjoy everything that Walt Disney World and DCL has to offer.

Following along. Looking forward to reading more

Welcome! :flower3:
Glad to have you here!

Wow! That’s an impressive itinerary !!

Welcome! :flower3:
Thank you! Planning is in my blood. We love to travel and I love the planning just as much.

So happy to finally being retired - 42 years of teaching were more than enough.
:lmao:your "selfish" comment - gives me all the more reason to get this show on the road.

Trip 1:

Salzkammergut:
December 30th – January 2nd

Introduction:

A few years ago we moved from a home overlooking the city to our current flat which is way further down close to a little lake and the Danube.

We loved watching New Year’s fireworks from the former place – from the new one you can’t see much, so 2 years ago we decided to spend New Year’s Eve in one of the most beautiful parts of Upper Austria – the Salzkammergut.

20211120_142957.jpg

It’s an area with beautiful lakes surrounded by mountains, where harvesting salt contributed to the wealth of the area.

bio-pizza-pasta-salz-imagebild-1030x687.jpg

You can even still visit the salt mines where the salt is harvested. So much fun as you ride deep into the mountain on a "Grubenhunt" (mine-train).

variant.jpg
And on your way to the "salt lake" inside the mountain you'll have to walk further and then use a looooong wooden slide to slide down to where the salt is harvested.

This area is very dear to my heart, as when I was still a student we had to do a three month apprenticeship at a hotel and I was lucky enough to score a spot in the most famous hotel of the area, the “Hotel Weisses Rössl” (the white horse inn), made famous by Ralph Benatzky who wrote a musical about it and there were several movies made about it.
It's as close to the Austrian hearts as "Sound of Music" is to American hearts.

Fell in love with the area and always happy to go back. :cloud9:
