To the DIS'er (sorry can't remember your name) who offered this suggestion to me awhile ago..I say THANK YOU!...wow..what a difference adding 1/2 a scoop to the carpet cleaning solution made..my carpets look new again..I tried it first in an out of the way spot to make sure it didn't 'bleach' the carpet..then went to work on the whole thing..I had a spot that I had pretreated previously, shampoo'ed previously, spot was still there..went over it once with the solution that had oxy in it..and the spot is gone!
Many thanks once again!

I need to do my carpets and this sounds like something I should know! Regular, hame cleaning machine? Just add Oxyclean to the solution? Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance!

I happened to be shopping for new carpet this week, and the guy at the carpet store told me that it's important when cleaning stains, to make sure you totally rinse the stained area after cleaning. In other words, when using one of those water extraction type steam cleaners, to go over the cleaned area with clear water until you no longer see any of the soapy residue coming up. He said that if you leave a soap residue, it's going to attract more dirt, and look dirty again.

He was also talking something about if you have a stain that seems to keep coming back in the same spot, it's because the stain had gone thru to the pad underneath, and then when the area gets wet again, it absorbs the stain back up from the pad. I don't know how true all of this is, so I'd be interested if anyone else ever had "reappearing" stains and what works for them.

I'm going to try the oxiclean myself, but won't be able to get to it for another few weeks.

Hoover Steam Vac...I used 2 capfuls of the rug cleaning shampoo (I used Walmarts allergy formula one I think)..add 1/2 scoopful of Oxy Clean (I used the powder..not sure if there is a liquid?) add the hot water to the full line, put cap on and shake to mix...test on a spot of carpet that doesn't show just to make sure..we have a cream colored/w/brown thread berber carpet..I tried just the shampoo on a spot first..didn't do much..used the oxy/shampoo on same spot..GONE!..I was totally amazed..Husband came home from work..looked at carpet and said, WOW..was Stanley Steamer here today..lol!
Good luck, and Happy Holidays!

I've been doing this for years, every since Sippy Cups entered my world, and it never did any damage at all, even after years and years of use starting around 2002. I don't know who recommended it to you but I can say it definitely improved the way my house looked when the kids were younger so I'd recommend it for anyone whose rug needs some help. I also use the steamer in my cars in the floors and on the ceiling (babies + crayons) and it was a lifesaver there too.
