Is there something going on that I am unaware of at the end of April - beginning of May ??
I'm planning a visit April 30 - May 2nd and I did book the Sheraton Universal about 5 months ago but often check before my travels to see if I can get a better rate as it as still quite high. But OMG the prices have doubled and most rooms are completely sold out.

Is there an event on? I can't work out why it's so expensive this time of year?? I'm planning on two days at Universal Hollywood with my two small kids (we have been before years ago) and am now worried about extreme lines - we can't afford express passes.

Not aware of any events, maybe someone can advise. Could be a conference, may be worth contacting the hotel and asking as the Garland and Hilton seem to be about half the price.
As there’s no real benefit to staying near Universal, you may find hotel rates in Hollywood more palatable and just catch the metro to Universal.

Thanks, yes we usually stay in hollywood area but we are only in LA for the two days at Universal before heading over to Orlando for a larger trip so want to maximise our time so staying practically on-site is just easier, especially with the kids.

The Hilton is more expensive for my dates than what I have for the Sheraton, at the moment I got a rate that is US$680 for the 2 nights but it's now over US$1000 for Sheraton and Hilton, hardly any rooms left to select from also.
It's not just the Sheraton that is more expensive, it's all the hotels in the immediate area.

USH is doing a "FanFest" weekends in April and May. Crazy that it might be affecting the hotel rates...

yes, that's the reply I just got from them. I knew about the Fan Fest nights, but all the info I have so far is that none of the dates I am there are fan fest nights. So unless I'm missing something, or the dates online aren't correct - as they haven't "officially" announced them yet. All the dates online seem to suggest April 25, 26, 27 and May 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18
I am there April 30 - May 2nd. I guess it's the May 2nd date that is affecting my trip, even though it's the day we leave.

Here is the reply I got:
