I am thinking of buying a tuxedo (on e-bay) for my 7 year old DS. We will be on a 7 night western. Any thoughts?

Many Diser's have went this route. We opted to rent, didnt want to pack the tux & shoes. DCL uses: http://www.cruiselineformal.com/

Same with us--I figured by the time I bought the whole shebang and shoes on Ebay, paid shipping, and then hassled with packing it all, the $100 rental from cruiseline formal seemed like a better deal. We rented when we cruised 2 yrs ago and DS was almost 5, and we are renting again when we cruise in 2 weeks (he will be a month shy of 7).

I bought a tux for my son on ebay. It was only $30, but some were less. My only advice would be to take measurements of your son and check the size measurements of EACH listing. I found that brands and sizes differed. We are quite happy with the tux we chose, it has a vest and a long tie, so he can mix and match and use it for semi-formal night too. All we need is shoes and maybe a tie in a color and he is good to go.

My son was 6 this last cruise and wore a tux. He got sooo many compliments he thought he was a celebrity it was great, he was so excited. I say do it!

Zane and his new DIS friends. As you can tell from the picture he had been in the tux awhile :rotfl2:

We bought one off e-bay too for DS, at the time was 8. We paid just about $38 for it. WHen we got it, I was a little disappointed in the quality as we are a little pickey, but once it got on, he looked great and it photographed beautiful. We firgured for that price, even if he wore it once, who cares. I know the lady who sells kids tux does all new ones. They go up to 18, I think. His is a 16, just pulled it out for our up coming cruise, (but it is too small, oh darn). The one we got was black, with a white tie and vest. So if you can get one cheap, for sure do not even question it, just do it.:thumbsup2

The cruise before that we rented it from home and that was a lot more. About $125 for the time we were gone.

We go in April and we were in the mall yesterday and my son asked for a Tux. I just laughed at him. I may look on ebay and see what I can find. Maybe surprise him. Would dress pants, white shirt and tie do for Formal Night and Semi-Formal night? Just in case.
Thanks!

We've been on 5 DCL trips and have purchased our now ds10 and ds6 tuxedo's and suits 3 times on ebay for our two 7 day cruises and 11 day Med cruise. We didn't have them wear tuxedos on our 3 and 4 day cruises. We were very happy with the tux's we received. They only wore them once before they grew out of them, but for the price it was worth it. DS10's sport coat cost more than his tux on our 1st 7 day. After that we bought suits from the same person on ebay. Like other posters have said, be careful in measuring. My ds10's tux was a size 12 and his suit was a 10 but both fit him perfect. My parents had cummerbunds and bow ties made out of Mickey material on our 1st 7 day that they have worn each time.

Here's a picture of the boys in their suits/tuxedos from our Mediterranean cruise in July 2007:

Love the pics, they are handsome!

The pictures you get are priceless. For ds7's first cruise he was only 6 months old, but we bought him a tuxedo onesie from Nordstrom's. We bought him a tux (on ebay) for about $30 + shipping and he was soooo dapper.

We bought dh a tux at JCPenney for $100 + shirt/tie.

I'm thinking about the ebay route for my guys' tuxes. I figure even if it costs about the same as renting, when we get back we can put them in a consignment shop and recoup some cash that way. But I'm nervous about buying on ebay, especially clothing. Do DIS rules allow you to say who you dealt with on ebay?

As for measuring, I don't sew and don't know anything about measuring, but I guess I could take my guys to the local menswear shop and get them measured. Or to a tux shop and just tell them that I'll think about it? I hope that's ethical. I know I'd have to get them measured right.

If you want to know who I dealt with on ebay, just pm me. They have a store and had many sizes available.

Measuring is very easy. I measured the arms from the shoulder to wrist, for the jacket. My son is quite slender so I wasn't worried about chest size. As it turns out it is a rather roomy jacket, but that is easier to take in than a jacket too small. So if your son is not super slender also measure around the chest. For the pants, measure the waist and inseam, which is the inner leg to the heel area. That way you can have a fairly good idea of the size you will need.

DH rented his tux on board, but we bought DS's off of ebay. For the first cruise I think it was around $30 with the shipping, but I had to get it altered for another 20 or 25. For this last cruise it was $10 plus $5 shipping and it didn't need to be altered. :cool1: I had DH take DS with him when he went to get measured at a tux shop. It worked out great!
