TSA Precheck ID requirements for 15 year old

My family and I have our in-person appointments for our TSA Pre-check applications this week. Our 15 year old is going to the DMV earlier in the day to get her state ID card. I just realized our DMV only issues a temporary ID card to you that day and then mails the plastic card later. The TSA Pre-check phone lines are closed so I can't ask them today...does anyone know if the temporary state ID is sufficient as proof of ID for the TSA Pre-check application?

That is a good question. Adults need photo id and proof of address, but not sure about kids. When I travel with my younger relatives, they bring a school photo id but have never once been asked to show any identification. Not sure about precheck though. Can you call before driving down?

I called TSA last week and they were firm that she needs a state-issued ID. Hence our upcoming visit to the DMV. I just noticed today, though, when checking to see what documents a 15 year old brings to the DMV to prove she is who she says she is, a tiny little note at the bottom of the page stating you get a temporary ID card at the DMV and the permanent one is mailed to you. Of course, we already have our appointments at the TSA Precheck place scheduled for that afternoon. I'd hope the temporary state ID card should be sufficient for TSA Precheck purposes, but I don't know and they're closed now. I guess I'll call them quickly on Monday morning before we head to the DMV. If the temporary card isn't good enough, we'll have to cancel our TSA appointments.

I don’t know about your state, but Georgia will also issue you a temporary license. They specifically asked at the DMV if you were intending to fly in the near future because the Georgia temporary license is NOT valid and you should delay getting your new license until you return.

I’ll also add that if you are flying soon and assuming that it’s not a long drive, you may want to just go by yourself and again later with your kid. I know officially 13 and over have to go through their own application but whenever my parents fly, my father is Precheck and my mother is not. But whenever they fly together, she gets Precheck printed on her boarding pass.

Our kids have always been given TSA pre-check automatically. If your child has been given it before, there is a good chance that she will still get it automatically for your next trip so that she does not need a KTN. Does she have a passport that you can use as ID?

Thanks, everyone. I suspect the temporary state ID won't work for her TSA Precheck application, but I'll call them tomorrow morning to verify. If not, I think DH and I will still go ahead and do our Precheck interview with the hopes that our daughter would get it assigned to her if we both have it.

We've taken a ton of flights, and I think only one of us ever had it assigned randomly one time (and we chose to just all go through the regular line together).

I thought I'd planned this so well - I was able to get three appointments back to back, over break when we're all off work and school...oh, well. The interview place is over an hour away so I wanted to accomplish this in one trip, but it is what it is, as they say!

We got it for my DS bassoon as he turned 13. Used his passport which made it easy.

DD doesn't have a passport nor any need for one (other than it would make this easier, I guess).

I would keep your appointments and let them decide. If she doesn't get precheck and is on the same flight itinerary as you or DH (or anyone who has TSA Pre) until she is 16 she will most likely get precheck as well.

Now that she will have ID going forward just wait until shes closer to turning 16 and book her another appointment and just take the "discount" on not paying for a year she doesn't need it!

Yes, I think that's our plan. Thanks everyone!

As long as you aren't attached to going through PreCheck because it will not be guaranteed she gets it. I have had it for years and not one time has anyone I booked flights for gotten it just because I did and we booked at the reservation. I finally just got Clear too, and when I'm flying with someone that doesn't have PreCheck I sign them up as a guest on my Clear account. Not as good as PreCheck but better than nothing.

I'd still take her Temp ID. Here in TN ours are valid for flying. DH and I just got some when we converted to Real ID. The documentation here tells you the temp were valid for flying

Every time I have booked flights together, everyone in my party gets Pre Check (I am only one with KTN).

Consider yourself lucky. My DIL & GD were on same confirmation as me in August on Spirit and didnot get the designation on their tickets

Me too. I’m the only when with it and on different occasions my husband, my kids, my boss and my friend all got it also when I purchased the tickets under the same itinerary. This was on SW and Delta. Flights from Columbus, Orlando, Nashville, Las Vegas and Seattle.

Then I've been "lucky" every time I've flown the last three years (4-5 times a year).

Sort of update: I called TSA today and they said a temporary ID was absolutely not acceptable because it doesn't have a picture. Went to the DMV since DD needs the ID anyway, and lo and behold the temporary ID has her picture on it. It's literally the ID on a piece of paper instead of a laminated plastic card. So, we're headed to our TSA appointments later this week and we'll see how it goes.

That’s what ours is like, it’s exactl like the true DL, but on paper instead of plastic. Photo, color, etc. I guess that’s why they are accepted?

Indeed you have :).

Not sure how/why the algorithm is applied that decides who gets the precheck.

I received it nearly all the time when flying SWA (before I did apply for precheck) but DH on same ticket wouldn’t have it indicated on his ticket 50-50.
