TOENAIL FALLING OFF...advice needed

So in May I did a mini-marathon. I have done in the past with no issues. As I have been getting pedicures my nail tech noticed that my nails were bruised, then separating from the nail bed (this is 2 nails). We have been very careful (last pedicure 3 weeks ago). Yesterday to my horror :sad1::sad1::sad1: I discovered my big nail is coming off (I can see new nail underneath about 1/3 way up). So it is off on one side and the bottom but still attached to the side.

I assume it will slowly fall off from there. Guess the question is I am supposed to have pedicure Thursday. I know she can't remove the nail (nor would I want her to). Do I keep appointment (will she even touch that toe) or just wait till it falls off and then have the nub polished (can they even touch that) OR DO I JUST DO TOES MYSELF.

Thanks.....

I would just keep it covered with a bandaid until the new nail is covering enough of the toe to protect it and leave it alone. You could have the pedicure on the others.

It is VERY common for runners to bruise their toenails and lose them. When I was running 5 miles a day I bruised mine and was horrified when it started coming off. I am sure this is nothing the manicurist hasn't seen. Do not try to hurry it up or you'll likely start to bleed. Like the other poster said, just keep it in a bandaid until the other toenail grows in, and get a pedicure on the others.

The same thing is happening to me on both big toes. The podiatrist (seeing him for broken foot unrelated to nails) advised me to just leave them alone. Pedicures are fine. I've been keeping them polished because they look better that way. Good luck! Hope you can keep running!

My daughter bruised her big toe nail tumbling and soon her nail lifted so I took her to the dr and he removed it. He also gave us some anti fungus medicine to keep on it to keep a fungus from developing as it grew back.

I wouldn't go for a pedi when I have part of my nail bed exposed. Something about putting my feet with some raw exposed tissue into a tubn where 100's of toher feet have been. :crazy2:

As far taking the toenail off, if you decide to do that I'd probably go to a foot doc.

You need to cut your nails shorter.

My foot doc told me that if I was going to be a "long distance athlete" (which is kind of funny if you saw me but I have walked 1/2 & full marathons) then my toenails should be below the tip of my toes and the tips of the toenails should be beveled back. Nails dislodge from the bed because of hitting on the front of your shoe.

At least that's what my foot doc says......

You need larger running shoes. You should be wearing at least one size up from your normal shoe size.

I also lost a toenail but it was on my second toe which is longer than my big toe. The new toenail grew in underneath and pushed off the bad toenail. It was pretty disfigured for a while but now it's okay.

DH hiked all the way to the bottom of the GrandCanyon and back up but forgot to trim his toenails. Both big toenails got bruised and one was hanging on by a thread for a couple months. He just lost it and the nail is only a third of the way grown in.

The nail on my right great toe was damaged when I dropped a can of food on it. I completely forgot that happened and months later, I noticed that the nail is no longer attached over halfway down the toe. Off to the podiatrist, thinking I have some kind of fungus or something. She trims it back to where it is attached and sends it off for a biopsy. Biopsy is negative and the nail has since grown completely out, but is still not attached to the nail bed past about one-third way up the toe. Can't tell a thing when it has polish on it. Just wanted to add that yours may never be the same again.

Thanks for all the info. Decided against the pedicure and soaking. Looks like my other big toe might come off too along with one other. I do have new pair of shoes since this. Nails being cut short today and polished by me.

thanks

So funny you should post this. I also damaged my great toe nail months ago by dropping something on it. Nail was lifted up & loose for months. Last week I noticed it was tearing about 1/3 of the way up. Sunday night it tore off as I was getting out of the shower. No pain or bleeding, just popped off. What is left is still lifted a little but firmly attached at the base. This has never happened before & I'm wondering how long it will take to be normal again. So yesterday as I'm wondering about that, I think "Hmm, I could post on the Dis & see what they think". Next thought was "ooow, no that's gross, you can't do that". So glad you were brave enough to post so I didn't have to! :lmao:

Figure here you can ask anything! :)

I lost most of my fingernails a few years back thanks to FUNGUS from artificial nails. They kept filling and when taken off my nails were gone....long story (and this was 'upscale' salon). It took about 4 months for them to reach a short length. I guess I'd rather lose toes than fingernails---my hands looked horrid!

Just waiting for COLD weather so I can wear my closed shoes. Off to store to get fun color polish and to take off what is on so I can see how other 2 are.

Hope yours grows back soon! :lmao::thumbsup2

Thanks! :goodvibes You too! And this is one of the few times in my life that I will be OK with the weather getting cooler. :rotfl:

I just lost a toe nail. A few weeks I stubbed my toe when using the bathroom in the middle of the night without a light on. Last weekend I was camping and the nail fell off. No blood or pain involved.

I did have a pedicure right after I injured it. I asked that other than the polish change the nail not be touched.
