Title Chosen: World of Friendship! October 2017 Girls Getaway: Aloha to the Poly/ MCO Hyatt p33-4

Pre-trip drama

The couple of months leading up to this trip were very busy for me. In mid-August my family flew to Seattle and went on a week-long Alaskan cruise. A couple of weeks after that, my friend Teena and I were scheduled to go on the Disney Fantasy, Eastern itinerary, sailing from September 9-16. Then Hurricane Irma blew through the Caribbean and Florida and our cruise was cancelled. We rescheduled for a Western itinerary setting sail on September 30.

In the fall, my part-time job at a rescue farm and historical farmhouse picks up steam with my preschool farm friends group and school field trip visits.

And then, there is my dad.

My dad is one of my favorite people on the planet. He is 84, mentally sharp, but starting to slow down physically. The home he has been in since the 1960s is too much for him and he finally consented to touring some senior housing options. We toured one place on Monday October 16 and another that Wednesday. As soon as lunch was over at the second place, we signed the lease and paid the deposit for a room there. By Sunday, we had moved him in. We got his phone, cable tv and internet service set up.

I love the place and my dad is settling in pretty well. The food is fabulous, the building is bright, has lots of public spaces and activities throughout the day. Amazingly, 40 percent of the population is male.

Senior food porn! Fish with a cracker crust was one of 4 entrée selections for lunch that day.

I spent the Tuesday before my trip running errands with my dad and almost all of them went wrong or took way longer than they should have. One of the things I had hoped to accomplish was cancelling his cable and phone service and switching his internet to the new apartment. I was told they were included in his monthly rent and since we got everything working for him, we just needed to change him over to the bulk billing of the complex. But the provider wouldn’t talk to me unless my dad told them it was ok. We ran out of time for me to call while I was with him to give his consent.

I was actually in pretty good shape and ready for my trip the following day. When my husband got home from work, I decided I would try to deal with the phone bill one more time. Once again, they wouldn’t talk to me unless my dad said it was ok. So I put Mark on the phone and I was added to the account.

The person on the line was very helpful and I successfully took care of his account.

********************************************************************************

Nannette had arrived at Saratoga a day earlier than Janet, ~Ninja and I were arriving. Tuesday night we received this email from her:

“I’m in my room dying.”

Nannette was suddenly hit by symptoms of a virus her granddaughter had before she left on the trip.

Nannette told us she would be arranging for a deep cleaning and sanitizing of the room before we arrived.

***************************************************************************************

Wednesday, trip day, had arrived.

My car service arrived around 6:15.

Normally when I fly out of Manchester I drive and park, but my flight home was going to be landing around 11 pm, so I hired the car service I use when flying out of Boston. (This turned out to be an incredibly helpful decision at the “end” of my trip)

In the car on the way to airport, I got a message from my dad.

“My phone isn’t working, so you have to contact me by email”

Ruh-roh!

After I got through security, I called the apartment manager who told me that no, phone service was not included.

I found a quiet gate at the airport and spent the time prior to boarding my flight talking with someone at the phone company who told me that they could send a technician over the following day to re-install my dad’s phone service. But he had lost the phone number he had for 60 years!

I felt HORRIBLE! I sent a quick email to my dad when I boarded my flight explaining what happened but this really put a damper on my mood during my flight and most of that first day. The next day when the technician visited my dad he repeated that once a phone number is discontinued it goes to a dead file. I tried a couple of times during the trip to get in touch with the phone company, but I kept getting cut off going through the call-in directory.

The good news: After I returned from the trip and called from home, I was able to restore his original phone number

:woohoo:

As a consequence of being on the phone until my boarding number was called, I have no pictures from the airport and I didn’t have time to get breakfast/coffee before the flight, but other than the drama with the phone company, my flight was uneventful. I had 3 drink coupons from Southwest that were expiring at the end of my trip, so I cashed one of those in for a screwdriver.

I took a few pictures from the plane, because, that’s what I do.

The fall colors were late arriving this year and although it was raining at takeoff there were glimpses of beauty.

Getting closer!

~Ninja had arrived in Orlando a couple of hours before my flight was scheduled to touch down, but Janet’s was arriving shortly before mine, so she waited for me and greeted me when I got to the Magical Express area.

We found out after the fact that ~Ninja had left a picture of Roger the Donkey in the airport elevator to welcome us to Magical Express (as she had done on a previous trip) but Janet and I took the escalator so we didn’t see if it was still there when we arrived.

We sped through the ME line and boarded an almost full bus immediately. Somehow, the second row behind the driver was open! We grabbed those seats and gabbed for the entire trip.

As we approached the arch, I went into paparazzi mode- I took 11 pictures with my phone!

We arrived at Saratoga Springs and requested a golf cart to take us to our room since nether of us had ever stayed here before and we had no clue where our building was.

Next up: Saratoga Springs (A “two bedroom” villa for the price of one)

Pre-trip drama seems to be a common occurrence for most. I am glad you got everything figured our for your Dad eventually. Some of those phone/cable companies like to be difficult when they don't need to be.

Excited to hear your thoughts on SSR. I stayed there for the first time in January and enjoyed it.

I’m loving your golf cart selfie with Janet :)

You dad’s new place sounds great. Funny I always think Nate is the image of Mark but I can see a resemblance between him and your dad too :)
You are an awesome daughter taking such good care of your dad and I’m sure he appreciates it :)

My daughter stayed at SSR and liked it. She loved the variety of dining options at the Spring though she missed dandering into Epcot from YC/BC

You are a saint and wonderful daughter!
Dads place looks really nice. I’m sorry the cable and phone people were being difficult.
Glad in the end he got his old number back.
My good friends across the street own at SSR and they like it very much although lately they’ve been staying at BCV. Location location location ;)

It sounds like a great dad has a great daughter!

The photos from the air are beautiful, Dee. Sometimes, I want to take pictures from the air (love those gorgeous sunsets painting the horizon beautiful shades of pink and orange), but those darned scratched and dirty windows always seem to deter my photographic aspirations!

Better late than never! I'm in! Girls trips are the best!

I'm glad you found a nice place for your dad. One less worry in your life. Do you have to sell his home now? I went through all of that in 2016, so feel free to vent anytime.

I really needed this getaway, and needed it even more after the fast-paced move-in for my dad. Fortunately, by the time I reached EPCOT that afternoon, I was able to "Let it go" and enjoy myself.

I have to say for the most part the cable/phone company has been very helpful and responsive. Too responsive, since I was able to cancel his service when I shouldn't have done so. When I call in talk to someone (except for the time at the airport) everyone I have spoken to has been extremely helpful.

This was my first DVC stay. I'll post my update with pictures and comments soon.

I love the picture too! It was nice being on a trip with people who didn't mind getting pictures taken.

My dad so deserves to be happy and to be someplace where he is taken care of.

To be sure the biggest downside was not being able to walk to a park. You could walk to Disney Springs, but I am not a huge fan so that is not a big advantage for me.

::yes::

Great archway photos btw :thumbsup2

Thank you! I certainly took enough of them!

My best so far are from when I was in Teena's car as she was driving to work. No other cars on the road at that time.

I am not exaggerating when I say my dad is an extremely special person and all of my good qualities come from him. I am happy to help him as much as I can, but sometimes it is really overwhelming!

He was thrilled to get the phone number back and I was even happier!

ITA with your neighbors about location!

My dad deserves happiness. He is unbelievably devoted to family and despite some pretty difficult circumstances, he always made sure my brother and I were cared for and happy.

I love to be at the window to watch what is going on and to take pictures. But like you said, often the windows are blurry, dirty or scratched, so photos do not do the scenery justice.

Not late at all. I have barely gotten started.

I think we discussed the difficulties of dealing with parents homes previously. We don't have to sell the house, but we don't want to keep it empty for long. My brother wants to move in but there is a LOT of cleaning and repair that needs to be done first.

:faint:

Oh jeez I'm sorry about all the drama leading up to the trip! Glad to hear your were eventually able to sort out your dad's phone and get his number back!

Beautiful pics from the plane and of course going under the arch!

I totally missed the beginning of your trip report. I have been super busy, too, and am finally playing catch-up. :)

I love the place and my dad is settling in pretty well. The food is fabulous, the building is bright, has lots of public spaces and activities throughout the day. Amazingly, 40 percent of the population is male.
I'm glad that you were able to find such a nice place for your Dad. That must make you feel confident that he will be in good hands. Has he made friends yet?

That is great news! I was hoping that once the "dust settled" that they would be able to re-issue his original phone number. :)

We had a golf cart take us to our room when we stayed at Old Key West. There was no way that we knew where we were going, either. And it would have been a pretty long walk with our carry-ons.

This was my first DVC stay. I'll post my update with pictures and comments soon.
We love staying in a villa. I can't wait to hear what you think of them. :)

Drama right before a trip is no fun! It seems like there is always something going on right before we leave on trips too. Why is that??
The assisted living home does look beautiful. Glad everything worked out for him.
I've never stayed at SSR, but DH and DS have play golf at LBG often, so I've layed by the pool with my book a few times. I know I shouldn't be doing that (Shh don't tell anyone LOL) but it's only for like an hour. I usually hop on a bus and go to a park or DS and when I get back I relax for a bit.
Can't wait to hear about your trip.

I'm glad you go everything situated with your dad. His new home looks beautiful, and I'm glad he got his phone number back.

Glad you and Janet were able to meet up and enjoy the trip over to your villa. I hope Nannette was feeling better!

No worries! Some of it will seem quite familiar to you, I'm sure!

I'm glad that you were able to find such a nice place for your Dad. That must make you feel confident that he will be in good hands. Has he made friends yet?

So yes, he has made some friends- he has a couple of groups of guys he eats lunch with- I have met some of them when having lunch there.

My dad may be shopping around for other living arrangements though. He is finding the breakfast service, which lasts 2 hours, to be annoying. But at least he is out of his house and that is the important step forward.

That is great news! I was hoping that once the "dust settled" that they would be able to re-issue his original phone number. :)

So relieved!!!

Those fall colors are beautiful. I was glad that the colors were late this year. I hare missing them, which has happened during past late October trips.

This was my last chance to see the colors- by the time I got home, the storm that came through had removed most of the leaves from the trees.

We had a golf cart take us to our room when we stayed at Old Key West. There was no way that we knew where we were going, either. And it would have been a pretty long walk with our carry-ons.

We had to wait a few minutes for a driver, but he gave us a quick overview of the resort as he drove us to our building.

We love staying in a villa. I can't wait to hear what you think of them. :)

Coming right up!

I don't know why there is always drama, but I don't like it!

Your secret is safe with me. You can take my place at the pool- I never even made it there.

It's still an adjustment for both me and my dad, but in general the situation is positive.

This was the 4th trip Janet and I had at the same time. We had such a great trip over to Saratoga together.

Nannette was still feeling lousy when we arrived that afternoon. She had gone with ~Ninja to Target to pick up some groceries earlier in the day, but that wore her out. She stayed in the room while the three of us visited parks that day, but *spoiler alert* she amazed me with her endurance for the rest of the trip.

:cheer2:

We were in the Congress Park section of the resort (Section F). Very close to the quiet pool and the path to Downtown Disney

The lid of this chest opened and if you wanted to, you could store things there. There was one just like it on the Disney Fantasy.

I love the theming touches in the room:

I thought this main room was fantastic! Lots of room and usable space. It was really helpful to have the kitchen- we stored cold drinks in the fridge, the coffee maker was a lifesaver and I acted as short-order cook in the morning to make sure everyone had breakfast before we headed off into the parks.

I didn’t spend much time in the bedroom, but it was spacious and gorgeous!

Bedroom 2-

When we were making up the room for sleeping arrangements, I found there was a hidden 2nd bedroom in the villa! I took the two seating cushions and one of the backrests from the pullout couch and put them in the space next to the connecting door to the next villa and the entry door into our room. The entry door to the villa was able to open without hitting my bed, and I had a nice table where I stored my two pieces of luggage and all of the stuff I wanted to leave out. I LOVED my little cubby!

Saratoga Springs Resort

I didn’t take any resort breaks or spend any time at Saratoga during the day, so I have no opinions about the amenities offered there. Our room was close to one of the pools, but I never saw it. We were also pretty close to a pathway to Disney Springs, but again, I didn’t do that.

The resort is large and there are several internal bus stops. We didn’t have any issues with long waits for the bus, either on the way to the parks or getting back. We were in the Congress Park section of Saratoga, about a 2 minute walk to that bus stop.

We used the bus to get to EPCOT Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm, to Animal Kingdom Thursday morning (arrived for 9 am rope drop), Magic Kingdom Friday at stupid o’clock for 7 am opening and then Hollywood Studios on Saturday for a 9 am rope drop. We were the only ones on the bus to the Studios that morning!

I don’t remember having long waits while leaving the parks at night and I don’t think I had to stand on any of those trips.

My one complaint is that at night, the bus driver did not always announce the stops at Saratoga and it was difficult to see where we were. I am not familiar with the layout of Saratoga at all, so it was difficult to know when to get off the bus.

We made one visit to The Carriage House main building/food court on our way back to the room one night.

I have a few pictures, but wow, they are crappy!

Some grab and go items. I got a container of potato salad to have with a sandwich I made back in the room. It was ok.

This is the pathway to Disney Springs just outside of our building. You can see the hot air balloon up in the air.

I was in Grand Stand when I stayed there so much closer to the main building. I love your location though! That view of Disney Springs is awesome! I think I would have rather had that then being closer to the main building.
