Stupid Question of the Day: Do you put butter on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches?

I was with my friend when I saw her making a PB & J for her daughter and noticed she did not butter the bread. I told her she forgot the butter and she said she never puts butter on a PB & J because the peanut butter is like a butter substitute so no need to put butter.

I always butter my sandwiches, even PB & J. So I got to thinking...am I weird? Am I a sucker using too much butter? lol

I am bored this morning and on my 4th cup of coffee so decided to ask the question. But I thinking maybe I will save on calories and stop using butter.

It would never occur to me to use butter on a PB&J. Unless you like it for the flavor, why would you?

ETA: The only sandwich I put butter on is a grilled cheese and I put it on the outside of the bread--the part that is facing the hot pan.

The only sandwich I butter is PB&J. DH butters every sandwich, which I find gross. Ham and butter? Yuck.

I think this may be a cultural thing. I've never heard of putting butter on a sandwich except for a grilled cheese sandwich.

My dad grew up on a farm and he said they put butter on all their sandwiches. He still does. I never put butter on any of my sandwiches.

This is exactly what I would do. It's not overly about saving calories, it would just never occur to me to put butter on these things. I'm still trying to figure out its purpose.

No. But I have heard of it. And growing up, when I visited my grandmother, she would make me bologna sandwiches with butter on her homemade white bread. No wonder I had a weight problem!

Like a previous poster, I do put butter on the bread to make grilled cheese.

I'd only put one of butter, peanut butter, or mayo (don't like mustard on sandwiches). Not to save calories or money, but because putting on more than one would taste weird to me. Like some of the PP, other than grilled cheese, I don't often use butter on sandwiches (and, with grilled cheese, the butter is on the outside).

I do, however, use both mayo and cranberry sauce on my Christmas/Thanksgiving leftover turkey sandwiches.

Maybe not the only one but the only sandwich I really put butter on is a peanut butter and butter sandwich. I know it's weird--my dad got my hooked on it one time when he was making me a PB&J and we were out of jam. Since he already had put PB on one slice of bread, he slapped some butter on the other slice and I loved it. So, occasionally, I will have peanut butter and butter but never with jelly, as well.

And I don't butter any other kind of sandwich, either., and never with mustard or ketchup (I don't eat mayo.) I do put butter on buns for sloppy joes and heat them in the oven (that's from my dad, too.)

Funny this question comes up now. Just over Christmas I watched amazed as my husband buttered the bread while making a pb&j for my granddaughter. I've never done that. In fact, I've never seen him make a pb&j for any of my kids when they were little. He doesn't eat them and doesn't make them for himself.

I am a fan of pb and butter sandwiches on whole wheat toast. (It's really bad for you though, fat+fat).But on pb and j no, no butter. Yes on the outside of grilled cheese.

I voted other because I don't eat PB&J sandwiches. Growing up, all sandwiches were buttered. I thought it was gross to not butter LOL. I stopped buttering my sandwiches about 2 years ago, just to save some calories.

This is how I do it except I don't eat mayo either. Pretty much am a mustard person.

I have never heard of putting butter on pb&j.

I never put butter on my sandwiches (except the outside of grilled sandwiches like rubens and grilled cheese). But when I was a kid I liked butter and grape jelly sandwiches.
