We rented a Rug Doctor tonight and are going to clean the living room carpet tomorrow. I've never used one before and need some advice. Can you put Oxiclean in the steam cleaner or will it not work? We bought the regular Rug Doctor Cleaning solution as well. Just wanted to give it an added boost. Inlaws are coming this weekend and we need to clean the carpet.

I ALWAYS add OxiClean to my steam cleaner. You need to dissolve it completely in hot water before adding it to the tank. It really makes a difference. My sister does it as well and neither of us have had a problem.:) This reminds me that I need to clean my carpets!!

No problem - Just like Colleen said - dissolve the oxyclean first...
We have 2 dogs, so oxyclean ALWAYS goes in the steam cleaner...

It sounds great! How much oxyclean/water?

Do you just use oxy clean or do you add it with the cleaning solution? I did it once where I sprinkled it on the rug then sprayed it with hot water, scrubbed and then used the shampooer with just water in it did make it much cleaner and smelled better. I hate the smell of rug shampoo!

I just rented the Rug Doctor 2 weeks ago, and used the Oxyclean.

I used one scoop of Oxyclean in a 2-qt bucket of VERY HOT water. Stir it around a bit to make sure it dissolves. The Rug Doctor has kind of a screen that you pour the water through, so if you find some Oxyclean granules still sitting on the screen, just pour more hot water over it. Then, add the detergent. If you put the detergent in first, then add the water, sometimes it gets foamy.

The thing I noticed with thre Rug Doctor is that you go through a LOT of water. Everytime I filled the tank I added another scoop of Oxyclean and more detergent. Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys!!!! I am assuming this will work with all cleaners as long as you dissolve the OxyClean really well!

Wow so many replies. Thanks so much guys. Looks like the oxyclean is a go. I'm about to tackle this project and will let ya know how it goes. :D I've got a 3 yr AND a dog so I hope this helps a lot.

Learn something new everyday on the DIS!!!:D I'll have to remember this, rugs need cleaning around here also!

I'm another one that uses Oxyclean....I can't live without it!!! my rugs really appreciate it!!!
just make sure you disolve it in HOT water, you will see the difference!!

A tip from your uncle Cricket!

"Oxiclean" is available in it's true form much cheaper than you can buy it branded. You only need half as much of this stuff as the store bought brand and it's a third of the price.

The real Oxiclean

Where do you think these people get their stuff from? Mars? it's not magic, it's basic chemistry. They just re-package it, mark it up and make bad commercials.

Don't let them fool you! Read their own MSDS and decide for yourself.

Very interesting Mr. J. Cricket...

For anyone who is interested, Sam's Club has a HUGE pail (I think about 10 lbs. for around $12. It's a really good deal.

I'm in charge of cleaning the rugs at our small school....and I live by oxiclean....if you have really bad stains it helps to pretreat and sometimes even scrub......

but be aware that some stains depending on there length on your carpet....or make up might continue to wick up fromt he bottom even after you clean it....

So, oxiclean is awesome but it can't do everything....
