My almost 2 year old had his first sloppy joe a couple of weeks ago and he LOVED them.
I haven't made them in over 5 or so years...

We have decided to have them for his birthday party (which will have about 30 people at it) .

Does anyone have a really good recipe ?? (besides Manwich :rotfl2: ...we use it too!) that isn't too spicy?

Thanks a ton!

A recipe?!?! :lmao: Sorry - but I don't do much measuring around here. ;)

When I was in Jr Hi we made Sloppy Joes as part of our cooking class. I remember the recipe (even though that was over 40 yrs ago  ) because it was so simple!

1 lb ground beef
1 Tbl ketchup
1 Tbl mustard
1 Tbl brown sugar
1 Tbl vinegar
1 Tbl Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Now I have to say that I always thought that was too dry - I used way more ketchup than that....I can't say how much, but I usually put my finger in to taste the sauce before it simmers.

In the past few years, I've found that instead of ketchup we like BBQ sauce. And a Tablespoon or two A-1 Sauce in there works wonders! :teeth: Yummy!

Here's the recipe my mom always used when we were growing up. She originally found it in the local newspaper.

SLOPPY JOES

1 pound ground beef
¼ cup onions
½ cup celery
4 teaspoons mustard
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon each salt & pepper
2 – 3 cups catsup

Saute onions & celery. Add meat & brown until redness is gone. Add remaining ingredients & simmer for 15 – 20 minutes.

That does sound a bit dry but you are right, I would probably just up the ketchup and other things to tast...

I was just looking for some newer ingredients...

I am usually a "dumping" type of cook also :lmao:

NEVER thought of using celery before..onions, have done...I might have to try the celery thing.

Thanks SO much :teeth:

I'm a Manwhich fan but DH isn't. So I've started making it the way his family made it growing up.

Take your ground beef, add your favorite BBQ sauce, add chopped onions and mushrooms.

I've had to play with the BBQ sauces to find one that I like the best. It's cheap and I don't hear any complaints.

No....I am a fan of Manwich too!

i honestly didn't know they came any other way! :rotfl: guess i'm showing my cooking inexpereince here. But DFi adds extra pepper and a little garlic to ours and sometimes cheese, yum!

We like ours a little sweeter, so we go with the BBQ sauce style (adding browned garlic & onions) or we add a little more brown sugar to the catsup recipe.

Never thought of cheese with it. Yummmm.

These might be good for dinner tonight. :)

I make this recipe from Taste of Home

Super Sloppy Joes

2 pounds ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 celery ribs with leaves, chopped
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1-2/3 cups canned crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon steak sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
8 to 10 hamburger buns, split

In a Dutch oven over medium heat, cook beef, onion, celery and green pepper until the meat is no longer pink and the vegetables are tender; drain. Add the next nine ingredients; mix well. Simmer, uncovered, for 35-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Spoon 1/2 cup meat mixture onto each bun.

Yield: 8-10 servings.

If you're in a hurry you really don't have to simmer it for that long. I'm not a big fan of green pepper so I usually put in less or omit it all together if I don't have it. You also may want to go a little lighter on the Worcestershire and steak sauces so it isn't as spicey.

You might want to test out the recipe before the party to make sure he likes it.

Ok...I know this is weird but my family really likes it and it is very well recieved at events too.

For every pound to pound and a half of browned ground beef add one can of Campbells Chicken Gumbo Soup. Add ketchup and mustard to flavor and make moister. It is a bit weird because you are mixing chicken based soup with beef and the soup has rice in it. Occasionally I will add barbeque sauce if I want a little different flavor.

Try it ...you might like it!!

I've used Rachel Ray's Super Sloppy Joe's from the food network & my kids love them. Only thing I do different is to leave out the bell pepper.

This is one my mom found years and years ago - it's the only sloppy joe recipe I've ever known.

It calls for 1 pound ground beef - I always use 2 because we don't like it real spicy....

2 lbs ground beef
1/2 cup finely chopped onion (optional)
1/2 cup finely chopped green pepper (optional)
1 bottle Bennet's chili sauce (or any brand chili sauce)
SECRET INGREDIENT 1 can Campbell's Chicken Gumbo Soup

Brown 2 pounds ground beef...
IF you want... add some finely chopped green pepper and onion (about 1/2 cup each) I usually leave it out.. for speed.. laugh..

Drain the meat

Once the meat is browned and drained add the bottle Bennet's Chili Sauce to the meat in the pan (Bennet's is the best .. but I can't seem to find it anymore - so I've just switched to the store brand.. same flavor..).

Fill the bottle back up with water - put the top on and shake HARD to get the residual Chili Sauce and pour into pan.

Add Chicken Gumbo soup - if it seems VERY dry.. fill the can up with soup and add that...

Cook it down until it's the consistency you'd like.

I feed tons of teenage boys with this all the time. The two pounds easily make 8 - 10... more if you go light on the mix on the bun.

My mom has made this in HUGE batches and has sold them at a dog show as a fundraiser for our dog club. (They were VERY popular... :) ) She basically got all her meat browned... then would make up big batches in a LARGE pot.. and kept it warm in a Nesco roaster. For 30 .. I'd probably cook up 6 - 8 pounds of meat ( 3-4 bottles chili sauce, 3-4 cans chicken gumbo soup) - and serve with salad's and chips.

This is the recipe I use, without the mustard. I also add extra onion.

Yummy! :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Chicken Gumbo soup, huh? Quite a few of you use that I see...I should try it I guess

Thanks....I am getting some GREAT ideas!!! :thumbsup2

I was going to make what I call these "sloppy joes the midwest way" and couldn't find chicken gumbo soup anywhere! My relatives called them "tastee burgers". We have horrible grocery stores, but I'm hoping things will get better now that we got a huge chain grocery that seems to carry more variety.

I do two different sloppy joes
the usual one is pretty much like everyone else's

But the easy one I use is groundbeef I'd say twice as much ketchup as BBQ sauce (depending on which flavor you use changes the taste) & a few tablespoons of sweet pickle relish.

Here's one I got from a man at church, it makes a great hot dog sauce too:

2 lb ground chuck
30 oz Ragu Traditional spaghetti sauce
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup dry minced onion
2 tbsp worchestershire sauce
1/3 cup sugar

Brown hamburger and drain well. Put in saucepan with all other ingredients. Simmer 15-20 minutes, stirring often so not to burn. Can also be put in a crockpot after the meat is browned if that's easier.
